KEPALA BATAS: The Umno Youth-led gathering outside a hardware shop over a flag issue in Bertam here passed without major incident, except for a brief war of words between the group and representatives from Lawyers for Liberty (LFL).
Tensions flared when several LFL representatives held placards reading 'Jangan Membuli' (Don't bully) and 'Jangan Bersikap Zionist' (Don't behave like a Zionist), prompting a shouting match and name-calling.
Umno members began taunting the LFL group, leading the police to step in and order both sides to disperse, which they did.
Speaking after the gathering, LFL director Zaid Malek said the show of force by Umno was unnecessary, given that the flag incident was an honest mistake.
'His (Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh's) call to charge the hardware shop owner amounts to bullying and harassment,' he said.
'He holds power and influence, and such actions send the wrong message.
'Because of this gathering, all the shops in the row had to shut down for the day, and police had to barricade the road.
'It's an overreaction that affected the local community.'
The gathering was sparked off after the hardware shop owner, Pang Chin Tian, 59, was filmed holding a pole with an inverted national flag.
He was arrested following accusations of improperly displaying the flag and has since been released on police bail.
On Tuesday, Penang DAP erected a giant Jalur Gemilang at the shop and announced plans to mobilise its members to 'defend' the business premises.
Earlier, police cordoned off the service road directly in front of the shop to prevent any untoward incident, resulting in the 30-minute gathering taking place on the adjacent main road – Jalan Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi.
Dr Muhamad Akmal led chants of 'Merdeka' and 'Sayang Malaysia' as the group marched towards the barricaded shoplots that saw heavy police presence, including personnel from the Federal Reserve Unit.
He was joined by Bersatu and PAS members, who also sang the national anthem.
Dr Muhamad Akmal said the gathering was peaceful and driven by a patriotic spirit.
'We are not here to bully anyone. We want to make it clear that such incidents cannot happen. Our flag is sacred.
'We are here to send a strong message that mistakes like this are unacceptable.
'The flag must never be hung upside down,' he said, adding that the gathering was not about politics or race.
Several Penang DAP leaders and members were also present, distributing Jalur Gemilang flags to passers-by and motorists as they waited for Dr Muhamad Akmal to arrive.
Among those present were Penang DAP vice-chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin, assistant secretary H'ng Mooi Lye, and Chief Minister's special coordinator Lay Hock Peng.
All 10 shoplot operators along the stretch had closed as early as noon on police advice to avoid any untoward incidents.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said investigations are ongoing, with 38 police reports lodged nationwide – 17 in Penang and 21 in other states.
He added that the investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 also covered individuals who recorded and shared the footage.

Old video of an ‘overly emo' minister re-surfaces to mock Fadhlina Sidek's unsuitability to helm MOE

A BIG red bull's eye seems to have been painted on Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek's back. Targeted for her perceived mishandling of Zara Qairina Mahathir's tragic death and the Education Ministry's (MOE) weak response to bullying in schools, to say the Nibong Tebal MP is under pressure is putting it mildly. The nationwide anger is seemingly an opportune time for the opposition to pour scorn and ridicule the 47-year-old former activist and lawyer who specialises in Islamic family law and child welfare. The latest to join the fray is renegade UMNO supreme council member Isham Jalil who dug up a video of a parliamentary session from 2023. The video shows an almost hysterical Fadhlina retorting to a written question by Wee Ka Siong in a belligerent manner. Banging her fists on the lectern, she sounded more like an exasperated housewife berating a child rather than a learned cabinet minister answering legitimate questions in the hallowed halls of the Dewan Rakyat. Editor's note: The description provided by KiniTV to the clip states: 'Education Minister, Fadhlina Sidek did not give space for (Datuk Seri) Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) to interrupt to ask questions when winding up the Budget 2024 debate at the committee level for the MOE. During the debate earlier, Wee who is also the MCA president had questioned the inconsistent data provided by the MOE on the issue of teacher shortages. It may be old news but the timing couldn't be worse for the country's first female Education Minister as it just reinforces the perception that she is not cabinet material. Easily provoked This is more so as Isham who was also the former UMNO information chief sarcastically remarked on his Facebook page: 'Example of KBAT to kids on how not to answer a question (*not to be followed)'. Editor's Note: KBAT which stands for 'Kemahiran Berfikir Aras Tinggi' is a Malaysian educational framework focused on developing high-level thinking skills in school pupils. The post has already generated 8.1K likes, 3.8K comments and 912 shares at the time of writing which is an indication that – like it or no – the PKR women's wing chief is very much under the spotlight. Some commenters openly questioned her ability to carry such an important portfolio. It wasn't even a provocative query, observed one commenter. One commenter aimed a sarcastic barb at her being a 'PMX (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) sycophant'. The recent birthday message to PMX involving school kids chanting 'Happy Birthday, PMX' and 'We love you, PMX' also reinforces the view that she is nothing more than apple-polisher. Her fantastical outburst unfortunately led to claims that women were unsuited to such positions of power and authority. One commenter wondered just how Fadhlina was going to approach the issue of bullying in schools when a simple query in Parliament led to such an emotional tirade. It is not a good look for the Madani administration when the person in-charge of the education portfolio is being made to look incapable, emotionally unstable and foolish. It is certainly not great that calls for her to resign are getting increasingly louder and frequent by the day. – Aug 16, 2025.

Umno Youth chief faces sedition and threat probes after Kepala Batas assembly

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh completed giving his statement at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) here at 1.25am today over the assembly in Kepala Batas, Penang last Thursday. Muhamad Akmal's lawyer, Aizat Azam, said the Merlimau assemblyman had extended good cooperation and answered all of the approximately 80 questions posed by the investigating officer. 'He (Muhamad Akmal) was investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,' he told reporters when met in front of the IPD today. Meanwhile, Muhamad Akmal said he would give full cooperation to the police in the investigation into the case. He arrived at the Dang Wangi IPD at 11pm yesterday to have his statement recorded. The police had earlier confirmed that they had opened an investigation over a viral video posted on the Facebook account under the name 'Akmal Salleh'. — Bernama

Those riding on upside-down flag issue are 'syok sendiri' says Rafizi

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has criticised Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, saying his actions over the upside-down flag incident were "syok sendiri" (full of oneself). Speaking on his podcast, "Yang Berhenti Menteri", Rafizi said the public wanted leaders with a clear mission, not just those who held demonstrations. He questioned how long Dr Akmal planned to "ride" the issue. "Take Dr Akmal, for example. Bringing a crowd to bully and intimidate an old man will not solve the problem," Rafizi said. "I see those riding on the upside-down flag, trying to turn it into a political issue are those who are 'syok sendiri'." He said the issue was being blown out of proportion while other matters were not being taken seriously. Rafizi said that if Dr Akmal continued to sensationalise the issue, it would not last long. On Thursday, Dr Akmal led more than 300 supporters from Umno, Bersatu, and Pas in a 1.4km march to protest a hardware store that had displayed the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, upside down. The store owner, Pang Chin Tian, 59, had already apologised for the incident last Saturday, saying it was unintentional. Pang has since put up a larger Malaysian flag outside his shop as a mark of his "love and respect for the country". DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the march amounted to "bullying and intimidation" against Pang. He also instructed the party's members to lodge police reports against Dr Akmal under various sections of the Penal Code, including for criminal intimidation.
