'How lonely it was...': BCCI all but confirms Karun Nair's return to XI; India's final training session hints at line-up

Hindustan Times12-06-2025
It wasn't just one, but a double assurance that all but confirmed Karun Nair's return to India's playing XI after nearly eight years. The middle-order batter is set to play his first match for India since the 2017 Dharamsala Test against Australia, in the upcoming five-match series against England starting June 20 at Headingley.
First, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) posted a video on Nair with a "special message" from teammate KL Rahul. The video was captioned: "A comeback story with Karun Nair. P.S. - A special message from KL Rahul."
In the clip, Rahul welcomed his former Karnataka teammate with a heartwarming message, in which he opened up about how he prepared himself for the series against England.
"I've known him for a very long time and the months that he spent here in the UK playing cricket and how hard and how lonely it was and for him to be able to do all of that and come back into the Indian team. think it's special for him, for his family, and for friends like us who've seen his journey. So, like I said very inspiring as well and hopefully his experience and his learnings from playing county cricket here will hold him in good stead when he plays the Test matches here," he said.
Nair played just six Test matches for India, following his debut in 2016, scoring 374 runs at 62.33, which includes a career-best knock of 303. The veteran batter, who earned his selection this time on the back of a record Ranji season, vindicated the call with a double century in the first match for India A earlier this month, followed by scores of 40 and 15 in the second game.
"Feels really special. Very grateful and very fortunate to be able to get this opportunity again and really looking forward and excited to grab this opportunity with both hands," said Nair. "Not sure actually! I think I'll have to experience that feeling myself and, you know, just go out there and feel it for myself. And I'm sure there'll be a lot of feelings, ones that I can't express right now and It'll be a special feeling."
With the BCCI clip almost confirming Nair's return, fans could not keep calm as they thanked the Indian board for acting on the senior batter's three-year-old appeal. In 2022, Nair had taken to social media to post, 'Dear cricket, give me one more chance.'

If it wasn't just the BCCI clip, India's final training session before the intra-squad match in Beckenham hinted at the possible batting line-up for the series against England. India did a bit of fielding practice on Thursday, with Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper, while the slip cordon featured Karun Nair at first slip, followed by KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, according to a report in RevSportz.
Nair is set for a return if the team goes by the slip cordon. Although his batting position is yet to be seen, with few experts reckoning he could replace Virat Kohli, who retired from Test cricket last month, at No. 4.

‘They will beat us so badly you can't even imagine': Ex-cricketer hopes India ‘refuse' to play IND vs PAK in Asia Cup

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali is hoping that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refuse to play the Men in Green in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, to spare them the humiliation. Ali's comments came in after the Mohammad Rizwan-led side were bowled out for paltry 92 while chasing West Indies' 294/6 in the third ODI in Trinidad recently. Pakistan's 202-run loss came as a new low for the country as they lost a bilateral ODI series against the Caribbean for the first time in 34 years. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first match, Pakistan slumped to two back-to-back losses to return empty handed in the 50-over format. Analysing one of Pakistan's worst losses in ODI cricket alongside another former cricketer Kamran Akmal in The Game Plan YouTube channel, Ali ripped apart Rizwan's boys. He also hoped that India back out from playing Pakistan in Asia Cup 2025 just like they did in World Championship of Legends (WCL) last month. 'I pray India refuse to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, just like how they did at the World Championships of Legends. Itni buri tarah maarenge na vo, ki aapki soch hai (They will beat us so badly you can't even imagine),' Basit said as the host had a wry smile on his face. In the WCL 2025 recently, India refused to play Pakistan twice, including in the semifinals in protest against the Pahalgam terror attack that took 26 innocent lives on April 22. Ali also pointed out that a loss to India would spark a nationwide outrage. "If we lose to Afghanistan, no one would care much in this country. But everyone goes mad the moment you lose to India," he added. In the Asia Cup 2025, India have been grouped with Pakistan in Group A, amidst calls for the BCCI to boycott the clash. The all-important India vs Pakistan clash in Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai. The two teams could meet two times more in the tournament - one during the Super Four stage and another in the final if all goes well.

A prominent midfielder from the golden era of Indian hockey, Dr. Paes was a member of the Indian team that clinched the bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Dr. Paes, who served Indian sport with distinction both on and off the field, was suffering from an advanced stage of Parkinson's disease. Beyond his athletic achievements, he was also a doctor of sports medicine and served as president of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club. Dr Paes started his medical practice at NRS Medical College and Woodlands Hospital in the 1960s. "Very saddened by the passing of former Indian player and Olympic bronze medalist Dr. Vece 'Doc' Paes. 'Very Surprising...': Australia Batting Star Sharpening Bowling For T20 World Cup In India

Last Updated: Glenn Maxwell is honing his spin-bowling for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, aiming to excel in powerplay overs on spinner-friendly pitches. With an eye on next year's T20 World Cup in the Indian subcontinent, charismatic Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is honing his spin-bowling skills to become more effective during the powerplay overs, as he might need to bowl with the new ball on spinner-friendly pitches. The 2026 T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, and if fully fit, the spin-bowling all-rounder is likely to be part of the Australian team as it aims to reclaim the trophy it last won in 2021. Maxwell has been a regular in the Indian Premier League, representing various teams, with his most successful stints being with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings, where he has excelled as a powerful batter capable of making decisive impacts with the ball. Despite his bowling skills, Maxwell has bowled only five powerplay overs in total in the shortest format between the 2022 T20 World Cup and the ongoing home series against South Africa. However, the 36-year-old believes he could be useful in powerplay overs during the T20 World Cup as the new ball grips the subcontinent's wickets better. 'I think in the subcontinent you might be able to get a little bit more out of it (wicket) as a spinner early on," Maxwell told 'Especially that new ball, the hard seam, being able to grip on those dry surfaces. So it might be something we think about heading forward." He took two wickets in the second T20I against South Africa in Darwin, including that of skipper Aiden Markram in the fifth powerplay over. 'I love getting wickets. It's very surprising anytime I get anyone out. I'm there to do a job in the powerplay and I'm trying to execute that as well as I can," he said. Besides his bowling, Maxwell has been flexible in playing at any position based on the team's requirements. 'I've been a bit of the shuffler around the order, up and down. I'm filling holes at the moment. Even during the West Indies series, trying to combat Akeal Hosein (by) going up the top, this series (against South Africa) going a little bit lower, trying to manage that back end (of the innings). '(I'm) trying to play whatever role is needed for me in this side and just try and be as adaptable as possible," he added. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
