A Huge Cave in Kentucky Was a Smelly Disaster. Now It's Spectacular.

Main Street in the tiny town of Horse Cave, Ky., is the picture of small town America. There's an antiques store. A striking Art Deco bank building. A 19th century townhouse with burgundy shutters.
And then, just down the block, across from GeeGa's home décor shop, there's a cave.
For generations, the cave was all but lost to the town on top of it. Miles of caverns and waterways brimmed with sewage that sent a putrid stench up from the depths and across downtown.
Then came an audacious vision, a bit of money and a lot of grit. The town was going to clean the cave up.
50 States, 50 Fixes is a series about local solutions to environmental problems. More to come this year.
Today, Hidden River Cave is an underground biodiversity hot spot. (The town and the cave have different names.) There are 10 miles of winding passageways, streams and spectacular cave domes, and a museum dedicated to cave conservation. Translucent fish have returned to the cave's waters.

Inside Ginori 1735's Hamptons Dining Collaboration At LDV At The Maidstone

Located at 207 Main Street in East Hampton, LDV at The Maidstone has long been considered one of the most beautiful places to dine in the coveted enclave on the eastern end of Long Island. In summer 2025, the experience was elevated even further with the launch of a collaboration with Ginori 1735, creating a memorable experience guests can also bring home. The Florence-based brand is renowned for its luxurious tableware collections, decorative objects, textiles, and crystal. Through September 7, 2025, the restaurant is serving guests on Italian pure porcelain from the brand's latest tableware collection, the newest chapter of Il Viaggio di Nettuno, designed by Luke Edward Hall. The Maidstone LDV was the perfect venue for this collaboration. The hotel certainly embraced Europe this summer with an Italy-themed art exhibition called La Dolce Vita in collaboration with Salon 21 by Alex Bass as well as a pop-up shop with popular French clothing brand Sezane. Beyond the tableware, the garden and dining area are dressed with umbrellas and pillows in one of Ginori 1735's signature patterns and colorways—Oriente Italiano in Meringa—infusing the space with a Mediterranean-chic-meets-Hamptons-charm ambiance. Here's a look inside Ginori 1735's latest collection and hospitality collaboration. The Collection Ginori 1735's new chapter of Il Viaggio di Nettuno follows the first edition, which launched in 2019. The line features Hall's latest illustrations and colorways in Amalfi lemon, sky blue, terracotta, and pine green across new dessert plates, soup plates, centerpiece/charger plates, flat plates, bread plates, and mugs, along with other gift items, including a trinket box, coffee set, large change tray, and tea set. These pieces are perfect for an stylish everyday experience, for a dinner party with guests, or perhaps even a chic plate wall. No matter what it's used for, it's beautifully irresistible. 'I took inspiration from Greek pottery found in museum collections, and mythological stories connected to the sea. I wanted to conjure an atmosphere of summer with the new color palette, which reflects Mediterranean holidays: Amalfi lemon, sky blue, along with darker, earthy tones – terracotta and pine green,' says Hall. 'The collection follows Neptune, Roman god of the sea, as he travels across oceans deep: throughout this new collection, we encounter characters including goddesses and seahorses.' While many would say the collection is as perfect as the hydrangea bushes that grow in The Maidstone's garden, the designer notes these pieces were not meant to look perfect. 'My drawn borders are not 'perfect,' and the backgrounds have a hand-painted appearance. It was interesting to me to think about how we could get across a lovely kind of wonkiness with a printed product. After all, I don't like 'perfect.'' From earthy tones to vibrant greens and blues, the colors and seaside motifs add a fresh layer of sophistication to the already elevated dining experience. The colors also compliment the delicious seasonal dishes created by Chef Jorge Espinoza. Bringing It Home While the collection is available to shop at The Maidstone through early fall, it's also available online on Ginori 1735's website as well as at additional retail partners, including Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, and ABC Carpet & Home in both Southampton and Manhattan. After all, as the temperatures start to cool and the tides of the ocean begin to change, it's nice to bring a little bit of The Hamptons summer home to enjoy every day.
