Philip Kingsley's Swimcap is my new summer essential for sun and sea haircare

Philip Kingsley's Elasticizer is and has been my ultimate favourite haircare product for years. But, the brand has recently released a new hair hero I am equally as obsessed with – the Swimcap.
The launch of Philip Kingsley's Swimcap earlier this year was perfectly timed as it dropped ahead of the summer months and holiday season, which is when it is designed to be used. This hair treatment aims to protect against harmful UV rays, chlorine and salty sea water, which can wreak havoc with everyone's locks – dyed or not.
The nourishing hair mask has been formulated with trichologists to create a deeply nourishing and protective hair mask. It contains castor oil, olive oil, hydrolysed elastin to maintain the hair's elasticity and vibrancy. The sulphate and paraben-free hair mask aims to seal each hair shaft to protect against any damage from UV rays, chlorine and salt water. BUY NOW FOR £25
The Swimcap has also been described as the Chlorine Hair Protection Water Resistant Mask on the website, though it does much more than that.
The mask has been formulated with nourishing and protective ingredients to hydrate the hair, as well as prevent damage caused from UV rays, chlorine and salt water. The cream mask contains hydrolysed elastin, which strengthens the hair shaft to prevent damage, as well as castor oil to lock in moisture that is typically lost in the sun. Olive oil is another key ingredient, as it is rich in vitamin E and fatty acids to hydrate the hair, and boost its shine.
The sulphate and paraben-free formula has been refined by leading trichologists at the longstanding haircare label, so it is safe for all hair types.
But why is the Swimcap different to the Elasticizer or other hair masks we hear you ask. This mask has been specifically designed to wear in the day, particularly in the summer months and when on holiday, to protect your scalp and hair from the elements.
Through Philip Kingsley's research, they found consumers apply SPF on their skin, but 82% of people neglect protecting their hair. But it is essential to protect your hair especially when in the sun, whether you are gardening, swimming, sunbathing, or pottering outdoors, as it is often in direct contact with the sun. The sun's rays, combined with chlorine and salt water, is a cocktail that can cause your hair to feel dry, brittle, dull, and break.
The solution? The Swimcap. This nourishing hair treatment is water resistant, which means your hair, whether it is dyed or not, will be protected in the sun.
The mask is applied in a similar way to the Elasticizer. To reap the benefits apply before heading out into the sun, or taking a dip in the sun, as it provides a protective veil on your hair. It is best applied to damp hair to lock in moisture and seal the hair shaft, then wash out as you usually would with a shampoo and conditioner after a day spent beachside.
Philip Kingsley has found 92% of people found their hair felt protected after the first use, while 89% noted their hair had not dried out by sun or water, and nine out of 10 people said their hair felt hydrated.
Yes, these are bold claims, but we can vouch for this product. I tried the Swimcap on a recent trip to Ibiza. I lathered on the mask for a boat day and it stayed put. It also didn't glue my hair together, or look like I had greasy locks, in fact it helped create mermaid waves to last all day, which is a serious accomplishment, especially as my hair knots easily when the sea air and water mix together. After a day out, the mask washed out effortlessly, and left my tresses feeling silky smooth and shiny afterwards. More Trending
The Swimcap retails for £25 for 100ml tube, and a little goes a long way. However, Philip Kingsley is offering customers the chance to save more when they subscribe to get regular top ups of the hero product. Considering I won't go on holiday without it, it's worth the £20 subscription in my books.
Plus, if you are looking for an extra pamper, I strongly recommend you book a visit to Philip Kingsley's London clinic to assess your scalp and hair needs, and for the most luxurious hair treatment I have ever indulged in.
Trust us, you won't want to leave without it.

The best citrus scents to see you through this summer

Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more I love little more than zesty fragrance, I always have done. I find oud scents can be too heady, woody notes too opulent when you're a few rosé's down at a garden party with the sun beaming down. While rose and other floral scents are fitting for the spring/summer months, I still lean towards the light and crisp citrus accords. I have worn citrus scents all year round, because citrus notes have been said to lift the mood when the gloomy weather hits. However, I know zesty scents are often preferred in the summer months when you want something fresh and playful. Let's not get citrus scents confused with citronella, which is totally different, and why (I believe) summer fragrances get a bad rep. The main accords that characterise a zesty summer scent include citrus fruits, such as lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, while bergamot is also a popular find. Another myth to debunk is that these light and playful summer-appropriate fragrances do not last, but I've not found this. The lasting power is largely dependent on the trio of scent layers, base, heart and top. Whether you are looking for a summer scent to see you through this holiday season, and many more to come, a lightweight daytime aroma for the office, or you're looking to establish a signature wedding scent, we have whittled down our personal favourites. A sparkling citrus burst built around pomelo, which is a type of grapefruit, vetiver, patchouli, clove and suede, Jo Loves Pomelo is clean, sharp, and sun-drenched. Inspired by one of Jo Malone's holidays, it's ideal for those who want something uplifting, genderless, and effortlessly chic. I have worn this scent ever since Jo Malone launched her second fragrance label, and I wear it every day and night in the summer months, especially on holiday. BUY NOW FOR £35 A bold, modern citrus scent that balances sharp mandarin and bergamot with warming cedarwood and fresh white musk. It's fresh yet grounded, clean but with an edge, thanks to the blend of citrus and matcha, as well as wood resin and violet. It's a perfect unisex scent too, plus it has a bit more holding power than others. BUY NOW FOR £25 A few years ago I ventured to the Amalfi Coast and was welcomed into Capri's fragrance house, Carthusia, with open course I had to take home a scent as memorabilia, and now every time I wear this punchy zesty scent it takes me straight back to sipping a limencello spritz on the clifftop overlooking the Faraglioni rock formation at sea. It is a bold scent filled with lemon, orange, marjoram and bergamot notes, as well as wild jasmine that is undercut with sea moss, amber, musk and cedarwood, so it is not too pungent. Thankfully you can purchase it in the UK too. BUY NOW FOR £110 While it may be my boyfriend's go-to scent for evenings out, I think it is a wonderfully genderless fragrance. It's fresh and zesty, but with a slight peppery finish tat doesn't overpower the sense. Not purely citrus, but its zesty top notes give it a crisp freshness perfect for summer fun. BUY NOW FOR £165 (WAS £220) This minimalist scent combines the key accord, bergamot, with other top notes including bell pepper and grapefruit. The heart notes include ginger, muguet and cardamom, which add warmth and a bit of extra sharpness, while musk, sandalwood and amberwood are the base notes. It is fresh, earthy, and herby, yet is light enough for the summer months. BUY NOW FOR £89 This scent combines orange blossom with lemon, neroli and bergamot for a multi-dimensional scent. This blend achieves a sweet yet floral fragrance with a hint of citrus. In other words, it is a welcome alternative to zingy citrus fragrances as this is slightly gentler on the nose. BUY NOW FOR £170 The clue is in the name – this fragrance is fresh, but also long-lasting for hours of wear. It is a lighter sister of the classic Chanel Chance, as this version is all about citrus, wood notes, and jasmine. BUY NOW FOR £109 A playful citrus scent, which does exactly as it says on the tin. Kayali scents are known for being sweet, but this offers a zesty twist on that. It blends candied lemon, which is sour yet sweet, with fragrant freesia, and tart raspberry for a sweet (but not sickly) fresh fragrance. BUY NOW FOR £79 You know my love for Escentric Molecules 001, well there's another scent to have on your radar this summer. It contains the same Iso E Super ingredient that reacts with your natural scent to create a clean and bespoke fragrance, while the addition of tart mandarin gives the scent a summer-ready twist. BUY NOW FOR £115 This scent brings together lemon, ginger, apple, tangerine, with amber, jasmine and black pepper for a bold citrus perfume that lasts. It's fresh, yet zesty, sweet, but not sickly, warm and a little seductive. BUY NOW FOR £99 This genderless scent has garnered high praise from numerous beauty journalists I know, so it had to make the cut, though it is on the higher price point. The citrus-woody fragrance boasts notes of bergamot, amber, vetiver, and patchouli for a sophisticated summer scent. BUY NOW FOR £170 While iris leads the way, its zesty mandarin and citrus, with neroli, orris and woody undertones that creates a refreshing fragrance perfect for the summer. It's soft, fresh, on the gentle citrus side, and wearable for day and night. BUY NOW FOR £119 (WAS £140) I don't know what it is but Dolce and Gabbana's Light Blue always reminds me of summer, and has done for D&G often release a spin-off of the classic too, such as Dreaming in Portofino, and Summer Vibes, which is rather fitting. Just the words lemon, cypress wood and amber has us dreaming of balmy summer nights on the Italian Riviera. BUY NOW FOR £75.60 (WAS £108) Now that's what we call a scent-sation! Philip Kingsley is selling £25 ‘must have for your holidays' that'll protect your highlights

THOSE heading on sun-soaked holidays might be looking forward to time away in the sun, but battling to maintain frizz-free hair can be a real struggle. Between UV rays, salty seas, and chlorinated pools, beauty fans are turning to one haircare product from Philip Kingsley for an effective solution. Save 20% when you shop Swimcap Hair Mask and subscribe, £20 Many factors can contribute to hair dryness and frizz, but the Philip Kingsley Swimcap Water Resistant Hair Mask serves as a nifty sun hair protector. The rich, hydrating formula contains a UV absorber and conditioning agents to lock in moisture while defending against the dulling and discolouring effects of summer sun and pool chemicals. Just like our skin, our hair suffers from prolonged sun exposure. The UV rays act like bleach, oxidising the hair's pigment cells, leaving strands lighter and feeling more damaged. The Swimcap treatment mask, which costs £25 for a 100ml tube or £20 when you subscribe and save 20% off, can combat these hair concerns. Originally created for the first US Olympic synchronised swimming team, the Swimcap Hair Mask has now become a cult summer essential for swimmers and sun-seekers. The water-resistant mask was designed to be applied before entering the water or soaking up the sun. It then acts as a protective barrier and shields your hair against moisture loss, chlorine, salt water, and UV damage. Ideal for blonde, highlighted, or colour-treated hair, it helps prevent the dreaded green tinge from pool chemicals. Once rinsed and shampooed out, hair is left feeling soft, smooth, and nourished. In an independent user trial, the hardworking results spoke for themselves when 92% of users said their hair felt protected after the first use, and 9 in 10 participants said their hair felt hydrated. 2 Online, Philip Kingsley shoppers have raved about the positive results of the water-resistant mask. One buyer wrote: "This is a must-have for your holidays. "It protects your hair, in my case, colour treated, from the sun and chlorine pool water. "It smells good too. You can use it when you're swimming at home too!" Another fan raved: "I am an avid swimmer, Swim Cap is a game changer! "This is the best product I have found that protects my highlighted, post-menopausal curly hair!" A third review shared: "I swim three times a week, and before using Swimcap, my hair was suffering. It was dry, coarse, and difficult to style. "Swimcap has made such a difference to my hair - it's the first thing I put in my swim bag!" For those travelling light, Philip Kingsley's Hair Repair Travel Collection is another must-have, featuring four summer staples designed to detangle, defrizz, and condition on the go. Hair re-growth FAQs Anabel Kingsley, Consultant Trichologist and Brand President at Philip Kingsley spoke exclusively to Fabulous. How long does it take for hair to grow back? Hair grows, on average, half an inch a month. You cannot speed this up. Do rosemary oil and scalp massages work? Oils do not promote hair growth. In terms of rosemary oil, the current trend stems from one small study carried out on 50 men in 2015. No women were involved, and the study compared the effects of 2 per cent minoxidil to Rosemary oil. 2 per cent minoxidil doesn't do much for male pattern hair loss anyway, so the results were not very impressive. Oils do serve a purpose in conditioning hair treatments though. They help add shine and smooth the hair cuticle to lock-in moisture and improve combability. Scalp massages alone won't cure hair loss, but it can help relax you, aid in lymphatic drainage, exfoliate and help topicals penetrate. Are there any products or foods/vitamins you recommend someone using or eating to help with hair regrowth? To support healthy hair regrowth, if you are experiencing hair thinning we'd recommend our Density Preserving Scalp Drops clinically proven to help slow hair loss with continued daily use within three months. Telogen effluvium (hair shedding) due to nutritional deficiencies can often be simply treated with changes to your diet, and nutritional supplements such as our specially formulated Density Healthy Hair Complex and Density Amino Acid Booster. Iron and Ferritin (stored iron) in red meat, dried apricots and dark, leafy greens. Vitamin B12 in animal products and fortified plant-based foods. Protein from oily fish, lean meat, cottage cheese, tofu, nuts, chickpeas, and beans. However, there may be an underlying cause for their hair loss and rather than this being masked by using an off-the-shelf product, they should be encouraged to seek the advice of a specialist such as a Trichologist.
