What to Know:Could coding with AI slow you down?
In just the last couple of years, AI has totally transformed the world of software engineering. Writing your own code (from scratch, at least,) has become quaint. Now, with tools like Cursor and Copilot, human developers can marshal AI to write code for them. The human role is now to understand what to ask the models for the best results, and to iron out the inevitable problems that crop up along the way.
Conventional wisdom states that this has accelerated software engineering significantly. But has it? A new study by METR, published last week, set out to measure the degree to which AI speeds up the work of experienced software developers. The results were very unexpected.
What the study found — METR measured the speed of 16 developers working on complex software projects, both with and without AI assistance. After finishing their tasks, the developers estimated that access to AI had accelerated their work by 20% on average. In fact, the measurements showed that AI had slowed them down by about 20%. The results were roundly met with surprise in the AI community. 'I was pretty skeptical that this study was worth running, because I thought that obviously we would see significant speedup,' wrote David Rein, a staffer at METR, in a post on X.
Why did this happen? — The simple technical answer seems to be: while today's LLMs are good at coding, they're often not good enough to intuit exactly what a developer wants and answer perfectly in one shot. That means they can require a lot of back and forth, which might take longer than if you just wrote the code yourself. But participants in the study offered several more human hypotheses, too. 'LLMs are a big dopamine shortcut button that may one-shot your problem,' wrote Quentin Anthony, one of the 16 coders who participated in the experiment. 'Do you keep pressing the button that has a 1% chance of fixing everything? It's a lot more enjoyable than the grueling alternative.' (It's also easy to get sucked into scrolling social media while you wait for your LLM to generate an answer, he added.)
What it means for AI — The study's authors urged readers not to generalize too broadly from the results. For one, the study only measures the impact of LLMs on experienced coders, not new ones, who might benefit more from their help. And developers are still learning how to get the most out of LLMs, which are relatively new tools with strange idiosyncrasies. Other METR research, they noted, shows the duration of software tasks that AI is able to do doubling every seven months—meaning that even if today's AI is detrimental to one's productivity, tomorrow's might not be.
Who to Know:Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia
Huang finds himself in the news today after he proclaimed on CNN that the U.S. government doesn't 'have to worry' about the possibility of the Chinese military using the market-leading AI chips that his company, Nvidia, produces. 'They simply can't rely on it,' he said. 'It could be, of course, limited at any time.'
Chipping away — Huang was arguing against policies that have seen the U.S. heavily restrict the export of graphics processing units, or GPUs, to China, in a bid to hamstring Beijing's military capabilities and AI progress. Nvidia claims that these policies have simply incentivized China to build its own rival chip supply chain, while hurting U.S. companies and by extension the U.S. economy.
Self-serving argument — Huang of course would say that, as CEO of a company that has lost out on billions as a result of being blocked from selling its most advanced chips to the Chinese market. He has been attempting to convince President Donald Trump of his viewpoints in a recent meeting at the White House, Bloomberg reported.
In fact… The Chinese military does use Nvidia chips, according to research by Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, which analyzed 66,000 military purchasing records to come to that conclusion. A large black market has also sprung up to smuggle Nvidia chips into China since the export controls came into place, the New York Times reported last year.
AI in Action
Anthropic's AI assistant, Claude, is transforming the way the company's scientists keep up with the thousands of pages of scientific literature published every day in their field.
Instead of reading papers, many Anthropic researchers now simply upload them into Claude and chat with the assistant to distill the main findings. 'I've changed my habits of how I read papers,' Jan Leike, a senior alignment researcher at Anthropic, told TIME earlier this year. 'Where now, usually I just put them into Claude, and ask: can you explain?'
To be clear, Leike adds, sometimes Claude gets important stuff wrong. 'But also, if I just skim-read the paper, I'm also gonna get important stuff wrong sometimes,' Leike says. 'I think the bigger effect here is, it allows me to read much more papers than I did before.' That, he says, is having a positive impact on his productivity. 'A lot of time when you're reading papers is just about figuring out whether the paper is relevant to what you're trying to do at all,' he says. 'And that part is so fast [now], you can just focus on the papers that actually matter.'

Last fall, Delta said it planned to use AI technology to price 1% of its tickets at whatever a customer was willing to pay. The Atlanta-based airline hopes to utilize AI to do the dirty work of setting ticket prices. On an earnings call last week, Delta announced that it will test out the tech setting flight prices for approximately 18-24 months to see if it's successful — and if it is, it seems that the airlines will make it a permanent thing, according to View From The Wing. Ultimately, Delta wants this new change to be in the customer's favor. '[It's] a full re-engineering of how we price, and how we will be pricing in the future. [It's to] get inside the mind of our consumer and present them something that is relevant to them, at the right time, at the right price,' Glen Hauenstein, Delta's President, said, according to View From The Wing. The Post reached out to Delta Airlines for a comment. Operating with a customer-first approach is maybe how Delta landed on the list of the best airlines of 2025. Delta's AI ticket pricing will undergo a test period lasting approximately 18-24 months. AFP via Getty Images According to The Points Guy, the airlines not only took the cake for the seventh year in a row — but it was also named the most reliable on-time airline in the U.S. 'What put Delta over the top in 2025 was its strength across all the categories we analyzed, from the consistently strong, on-time airline operation it runs to the experience customers have at the airport and in their seats,' the outlet wrote in their report. Of course, with every good thing comes some bad. Earlier this month, a flap from a Delta Airlines flight on its way to Raleigh-Durham International Airport from Atlanta fell from the sky and landed on a driveway in a North Carolina neighborhood. The flag was 'evidently separated' from the left wing, yet the flight managed to have a safe landing once it reached its destination, according to a spokesperson.

Trump unveils $90 billion in energy and AI investments for Pennsylvania during summit in Pittsburgh

President Trump and many leaders of the country's largest technology and energy companies announced more than $90 billion in new investments from private companies in Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Mr. Trump, who spoke for about 30 minutes during a roundtable discussion at the Inaugural Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit at Carnegie Mellon University, said 20 "leading technology and energy companies" will invest in Pennsylvania to develop a new artificial intelligence economy, capitalizing on Pennsylvania's technology and energy assets. "We're back in Pittsburgh to announce the largest package of investments in the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," Mr. Trump said on Tuesday. Among the projects will be the construction of data centers to help provide the enormous amounts of energy needed to power AI, and an energy innovation center to train workers in the Pittsburgh region in energy and AI jobs. The event was hosted by Republican U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, who said the Pittsburgh region is uniquely positioned to marry its technological know-how with its vast energy resources in natural gas and nuclear to create a new AI economy. He said the investments will bring "tens of thousands of jobs" to Pennsylvania. "Our vision for this event came from the realization about the crucial link between artificial intelligence and energy, but never before have the leaders of all those companies, as well as major investors, come together," McCormick said on Tuesday. Mr. Trump highlighted Westinghouse, saying the Pennsylvania-based company is set to build 10 nuclear reactors across the country. He also touted his involvement in consummating a $14 billion partnership between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel, which he said will revitalize the Mon Valley. Mr. Trump said the investments announced on Tuesday will spawn the development of AI in the region. "We're building a future where American workers will forge the steel, produce the energy, build the factories and really run a country like, I believe, this country has never been run before. I think we have a true golden age for America," Mr. Trump said. "We've been showing it, and it truly is the hottest country anywhere in the world. I'm honored to be in Pennsylvania, and I'm honored to be in Pittsburgh, and you're going to see some real action here." The organizers are hoping the investment mark only a beginning, hopeful of leveraging the summit to ramp up energy production, build more data center and spawn new AI companies in the Pittbsurgh area — making the region the center of AI in the country. "We have phenomenal technology resources inside of our universities systems," PNC Financial Services Group CEO Bill Demchak said on Tuesday. "We have an abundance of energy, we have Westinghouse in the area. We have labor availability and we have a huge need as we see the transformation that AI is causing." The event came after Amazon's announcement in June of a $20 billion investment in data centers across Pennsylvania, the largest economic development project in the state's history. Several of the president's Cabinet members joined him at the summit. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and White House AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks were among Trump administration officials listed as summit participants. Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, was also in attendance. He is participating in a panel about major investments in Pennsylvania, moderated by Penn State University President Dr. Neeli Bendapudi. Industry leaders like Alphabet President and CEO Ruth Porat, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Blackstone President and CEO Jon Gray, Gecko Robotics founder and CEO Jake Loosararian, EQT President and CEO Toby Rice, and Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman were all listed as panel participants, as well. Mr. Trump's visit was not without pushback, as evidenced on CMU's campus, where signs painted with the words "protest the summit" were seen on The Fence. That sentiment on the CMU Fence was also posted on social media to, in the words of activists, "call on students and the Pittsburgh community to stand against fossil fuels, AI for surveillance, and authoritarianism." The advocates, who lined the streets across parts of the city, said the summit prioritizes corporate interests over sustainability and ethics. "I do believe we should be focusing more on renewable energy, green energy. Just kowtowing to oil and gas is not the way to the future," Zach Zourelias of Plum said. "I'm not saying get rid of it entirely. It is important for Pennsylvania, it is important for the country. But we need to be looking to the future, not the past."
