Ange Postecoglou's emphatic Europa League win has thrown everything up in the air at Tottenham Hotspur.
The status quo is eerily similar to his first post-Socceroos overseas job, in Japan, when Postecoglou narrowly avoided relegation in season one.
Yokohama F. Marinos had every right to sack Postecoglou – they instead adopted the patient approach of owners, City Football Group (Manchester City's owners), and backed him.
The next season they won the J1 League title in a canter, producing a trailblazing brand that still influences Japanese football.
Spurs are 17th for a reason, with Postecoglou unsurprisingly revealing how he'd prioritised the Europa League over the domestic season.
It was a high stakes gamble that could've sensationally backfired. It paid off in spades, comfortably outfoxing Manchester United counterpart Ruben Amorim.
Postecoglou claimed the coveted trophy and Champions League spot – including a $208.5m UEFA injection – rendering the Premier League ladder position irrelevant.
He navigated an outrageous injury crisis, a young, thin squad. A pragmatic tweak and European prioritisation demonstrated a flexibility, and confirmation that he's capable of leading this club to realise its full potential.
Now, the ball is in Tottenham's court.
'Mate, I'm a winner. I've been a serial-winner my whole career. When I signed, (chairman) Daniel (Levy) said, 'we went after winners, it didn't work, now we've got Ange',' Postecoglou said.
'No one has spoken to me. No planned meetings. Maybe they were waiting for this game.
'But I understand, the way things have gone in the league people are rightly concerned. It's a true reflection of where we're at.
'My own belief in what I do doesn't waver and I'll continue to do what I do.'
It's understood that Spurs considered firing Postecoglou, who signed a five-year deal, during this season.
The traditionally trigger-happy Spurs got a potential glimpse into the future with the European triumph.
In one fell swoop, Postecoglou has flipped the narrative and ensured Monday morning's final match of the season (home to Brighton), will be a party.
The tone could dictate the Spurs board's decision on Postecoglou, who declared he wants to remain.
Postecoglou was already in demand regardless of the Bilbao result, but the 1-0 win will ensure he courts interest from English and European clubs.
'Everything I've done, from training to decisions, was (prioritising) Europe. That's come at a cost. I just felt the end game was more important,' he said.

This final batch of assays from four reverse circulation-diamond and diamond drill holes have extended the Datatine shoot 240m down-plunge of the current Datatine resource. They returned a notable 6.6m at 3.40g/t gold from 362m, including 3.8m at 5.80g/t from 364.85m in BSRCD1805, the deepest hole in this program. Hole BSRCD1803 returned 2m at 3.67g/t from 297m along with 11.3m at 0.96g/t, including 4.2m at 1.81g/t from 333.83m. This hole, along with holes BSRCD1802 and BSDD049, returned intersections consistent with economic open pit grade intercepts. Pic: AUC Highlights underground mining potential Ausgold (ASX:AUC) will now utilise funding of up to $180,000 secured through Round 31 of the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS) to: Target sections where high-grade mineralisation is interpreted to have been missed; and Test for further high-grade mineralisation up to 150m beyond the current down-plunge extent. 'The latest assay results from Datatine continue to validate the potential for underground mining at Katanning,' AUC executive chairman John Dorward said. 'Results from BSRCD1805, which sit 240m down-plunge of the current resource, are particularly encouraging and support our strategy to pursue resource growth at depth. 'With both Datatine and the Central Zone remaining open down-plunge, we see clear opportunities to increase resources at the KGP and look forward to undertaking additional drilling at Datatine, supported by EIS co-funding, to follow-up this opportunity.' The company is on track to complete the project feasibility study considering the development of a large-scale, long-life open pit gold project at Katanning in late June. Socceroos midfielder Patrick Yazbek set for immediate return to club duty with Nashville
The 'business as usual' attitude that helped Patrick Yazbek play an important role for the Socceroos in their wins over Japan and Saudi Arabia will again apply on Sunday when the former Sydney FC midfielder returns to duty for his American club Nashville. While most of the Socceroos squad that sealed FIFA World Cup qualification with a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Wednesday morning (AEST) are now taking a break ahead of their 2025-26 campaigns, it's not the case for 23-year-old Yazbek. With the Major Soccer League season running from March to November, Yazbek and his Socceroos teammates Aiden O'Neill (New York City) and Kye Rowles (DC United) have immediate club duties to tend to. 'I have a game this week, so it's business as usual for me,' Yazbek said ahead of Nashville's away clash with Chicago Fire on Sunday morning. However, despite needing to put 2026 World Cup qualification celebrations on hold, Yazbek likes the thought of getting back to work to further his case for ongoing Socceroos selection. It was a similar attitude that resulted in him being chosen in this month's Socceroos squad after being overlooked for March's wins over Indonesia and China. 'That was my mentality before this camp – play well at my club and hopefully I'll be selected,' he said. 'I had a good month for Nashville in May, and that allowed me to be involved in this camp. 'That's the approach going into the next year's World Cup – play consistent, play well, and if I get called in, really make an impression like I think I did in this camp.' Yazbek definitely impressed. He added significant energy to Australia after coming on at the start of the second half in the Socceroos' 1-0 win over Japan last Thursday night in Perth. The performance secured him his maiden Socceroos starting berth a few days later against Saudi Arabia. 'Being able to start, I felt comfortable … it was an honour,' Yazbek said. 'It's such a competitive environment and such a competitive position too (midfield). 'I had to just draw back on what got me in the squad in the first place – playing consistently and playing well for my club.' Yazbek, who joined Nashville in July last year from Norwegian outfit Viking, said the quality of the MLS competition should not be underestimated. 'It's a really good place to play, and it's only getting better,' he said. 'There's so much money floating throughout the league to attract players and bring good young players in. It's not that 'old league' that it had previously been seen as. 'The facilities, the stadiums, the scheduling and the travelling – it's world class, We have a lot of luxuries that you wouldn't get anywhere else in the world. 'The quality's constantly going up, there are plenty of games and I'm excited to see what the next few years have in store.'

The pair shared the news on Instagram, revealing that the birth did not go exactly according to plan. 'Mummy laboured all day on Friday, only for me to be born via c section at 5:49pm on 6/6 weighing 3.585kg's,' the caption read. 'My head was faaaar too large so we had to change our plans late in the piece!' The couple's well-known friends were quick to offer celebratory messages under the birth announcement. 'We discovered that I was pregnant a few weeks after returning home from running the New York Marathon,' Holmes continued. 'As you can imagine, it was a bit of a shock given what I had just put my body through, but I'm in awe of what the human body can do. 'Keegan and I told our families at Christmas, which was a really special time for us all. We wanted to share our news with as many people as possible in person, so we've spent the last few weeks doing that. There were plenty of tears, that's for sure. 'I've been lucky enough to enjoy a beautiful start to my pregnancy, and we're soaking up every moment.' The 33-year-old was an inaugural member of the Adelaide Crows' AFLW team and since hanging up the boots, has been a key part of Seven's AFL and AFLW commentary team. As well as being a beloved commentator, Holmes has also appeared on reality TV shows Survivor and SAS Australia. Her partner, Brooksby, is also a former AFL player. He joined Gold Coast via the 2015 rookie draft and played 14 games in his three seasons at the club. He spent one year at West Coast in 2019, where he didn't manage to make an appearance, before playing one more AFL game at Hawthorn. The couple have been together since 2017 after matching on a dating app. Brooksby popped the question in Uluru in 2020 before the pair tied the knot in 2023.
