YSF distributes RM1 mln aid to 500 Southern UC students
JOHOR BAHRU: A total of 500 students from Southern University College (Southern UC) received RM2,000 each in education assistance today through a RM1 million allocation channelled by the Sultanah Fatimah Foundation (YSF).
State Health and Unity Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the initiative was part of the state's ongoing efforts to support students, particularly those from B40 families.
'About 95 per cent of the recipients are Johoreans, which demonstrates that the government cares for the welfare of all segments of society in the state,' he told a press conference after the cheque presentation ceremony at the institution here.
He said the state government allocated funds to YSF as a trustee to be distributed directly to students, in line with the announcement by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi in the 2025 Johor Budget last November.
'This initiative is now in its second year. We are also asking the university to channel this assistance to students from B40 families to ease the burden of their tuition fees, which are typically higher than at public institutions,' he said.
Also present was YSF chairman Mejar Cina Datuk David Wong Khong Soon, who presented the RM1 million assistance to Southern UC Board of Directors chairman Datuk Vincent Tan Meng Seng.
Ling also praised Southern UC's close cooperation with the state in producing skilled and competitive graduates in line with industry needs and Johor's rapid development.
'We need more technically skilled workers, and institutions like Southern UC play an important role in meeting this market demand,' he said.

Two Retirees Lose Over RM1 Mln To Online Investment Scams
-- Photograph for illustrative purposes GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- Two retirees lost over RM1 million after falling victim to online investment scams recently, according to Penang police. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said in a statement that in the first case, the Seberang Perai Tengah District Police Headquarters received a report from a 55-year-old man on June 12, alleging that he had been scammed by an online investment company for RM827,120. 'In early April, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Facebook promising high returns and subsequently got in touch with a woman…via WhatsApp. 'The victim was promised a seven per cent return on each investment made,' he said, adding that the man was told to download the company's app to register as a member and invest through the platform. Hamzah said the victim made 22 fund transfers into six different company accounts between April 19 and May 26. 'He realised he had been scammed after being unable to withdraw profits totalling RM23,241,952 as shown on the investment app and subsequently lodged a police report,' he said. In a separate case, he stated that a 56-year-old retired factory technician lost RM321,250 after falling victim to another online investment scam, adding that the victim lodged a police report on June 12 at the Seberang Perai Utara District Police Headquarters. Hamzah stated that around December of last year, the victim came across an investment advertisement on Instagram that promised high returns. He then contacted a female suspect via WhatsApp, who promised a 30 per cent return within three months. He said that on March 21, the victim made the first fund transfer of RM20,000 through the company's app, and within less than three months, he received RM14,150 in profits. 'He made 11 additional fund transfers between March 27 and June 3 into four different company accounts linked to the scheme, but realised he had been scammed after he could not withdraw RM280,000 in purported profits and was instead asked by the suspect to pay an RM120,000 withdrawal fee,' he added. He said investigations are ongoing, and both cases are classified under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies. Malaysia Retailers Association seeks SST waiver on commercial rentals to protect businesses, consumers
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Retailers Association (MRA) has urged the Ministry of Finance (Mof) to waive the planned 8% Sales and Service Tax (SST) on commercial rental and leasing services, scheduled to take effect on July 1. Retail businesses across the country are already under immense pressure from a succession of cost increases, including but not limited to the minimum wage increase to RM1,700; electricity tariff hikes; stamp duty on employment contracts; fuel subsidy rationalisation; the SST rate hike from 6% to 8%; and the 10% sales tax on low-value imported goods, MRA said in a statement, adding that these are just a few examples of rising fixed operational costs. 'The full scope of burdens faced by retail businesses is much broader, but even these alone are already impacting business sustainability and bottom lines,' it added. MRA said the additional 8% SST on commercial rentals – introduced without any consultation or engagement with the retail sector – adds further pressure. 'Rental is among the largest fixed costs for many businesses and this tax will push operating expenses even higher. It is unrealistic to expect retail businesses to absorb the full impact and many may have no choice but to pass these costs on to consumers – contributing to inflation and intensifying the rakyat's cost-of-living burden,' the association said. Compounding these challenges, it said, is the growing uncertainty in the global economy, especially in light of the recent escalation in geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel. This conflict has already begun affecting regional confidence, global commodity prices, and trade flows – making it an especially inappropriate time to introduce new tax burdens. In light of these concerns, MRA strongly urged that a complete waiver of SST on commercial rental and leasing services or at minimum, defer implementation sine die, until macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions stabilise. If implemented, the association urged that the SST should be shared fairly between landlords and tenants, rather than passed entirely to retail businesses. It also urged that service charges and shared area fees should be excluded from the SST scope; the SST exemption threshold should be raised to RM2 million in annual sales to safeguard small and independent retail businesses; defer the SST on rentals until after Visit Malaysia Year 2026 to preserve industry stability and support tourism-linked growth and introduce the SST gradually, starting at 3% and increasing progressively to 8% over five years. MRA said that retail businesses play a vital role in domestic economic growth and employment and thus it is critical that policies impacting this sector are implemented with transparency, fairness and proper stakeholder engagement. MRA said it welcomes further discussion with MoF to find a balanced and sustainable approach that supports both businesses and consumers.

Xanderia, CXL Group collaborate to launch app for early wage access
KUALA LUMPUR: Syariah-compliant financial solutions group Xanderia Services Sdn Bhd and human resource outsourcing solutions provider CXL Group have partnered to produce Kanz PaydayNow, a financial app that will redefine earned wage access in Malaysia. The app, a financial empowerment platform, is an innovative and secure solution that empowers employees with early wage access, providing a seamless way for them to access their wages before payday. It is designed to alleviate financial stress and enhance employee productivity. The initiative aims to enhance workplace financial well-being while fostering responsible financial practices. When asked about the motive of this app in helping employees with their wages, CXL Group CEO Fariz Abdullah said they are targeting low- to medium-wage earners who require financial assistance with their day-to-day lives. 'Without our salary advancement feature, many of them would either use their credit card to pay for their daily necessities, which would increase their debt over time, and some would even resort to obtaining loans from unlicensed lenders, which traps them into a vicious cycle of repaying their debt. 'Our motive is to help this group of people and help them with their financing as well as increase financial literacy via the app so they can learn how to borrow money, calculate interest, and many more,' he said after the official signing ceremony to commemorate the launch of the app. Fariz said the onboarding process for the app is easy, and many employers are interested in trying the app out. 'Assuming an employee earns RM3,000 a month, and RM100 a day, the norm is that they get their salary at the end of the month. Assuming they would have earned RM1,500 by the middle of the month, the employee can request a 50% salary advancement and receive RM750 the very next day. 'We receive an income from a small transaction fee that will cover our revenue and cost of technology each time they take out the money,' he said. When asked what separates Kanz PaydayNow app from other fintech in the market, Fariz said this app collaborates Xanderia and CXL technology together to form an integrated system that outmatches competitors in the market. 'Most players in the market use a standalone payroll application, which is not connected to any human resource system. For us, we are partnering both Xanderia and CXL tech together to make it into one integrated system, so any organisation who are already our customer will have to switch on the feature and it will work,' he said. 'That is the larger picture of our partnership; we are doing system-level integration,' he added. Fariz said his company has already run through a survey with employers who expressed interest in the app. 'We already have a large pool of employees – 1,000 to 1,500 – who are willing to try the new app. They are the ones who will get the feature first,' he said. Xanderia chairman and CEO Razi Pahlavi expressed confidence that the app will be well received by employers as they have already done a proof of concept with other smaller companies. 'Every month, there is always a salary advancement transaction of three to five. Although it is a small number, the problem is evident that employees are demanding wages earlier. 'If we can come in and solve the problem for them, it'll be very much welcomed by many parties,' he said.
