Picasso on a plate: Unseen ceramics up for auction
Emblematic motifs from Picasso's artistic universe - pigeons, fish, a goat, a bull, and a bird adorn the colourful plates and dishes.
"It's a truly exceptional collection. The plates and dishes we have here are real Picasso works," Bernard Piguet, director of the Piguet auction house in Geneva, told AFP.
"These unique pieces belonged to Picasso's estate, and in the early 1980s, his heirs gave them to one of their friends," he said.
The close friend, a French art lover whose name has not been revealed, kept them until his death. His heirs have decided to put the ceramics up for sale.
Made between 1947 and 1963 in the Madoura workshop in Vallauris on the southeast French coast, the ceramic artworks are being exhibited to the general public for the first time ahead of the auction next Thursday.
'Reasonable' prices
The seven pieces are being sold in separate lots.
Two large platters decorated with pigeons are both expected to fetch between 30,000 and 50,000 Swiss francs (€32,000-€53,000).
A third plate depicting three blue, pink, and brick-coloured fish on a white background, resembling a child's drawing, is estimated at €21,000 to €32,000.
A thin brick, titled "Head of a Bearded Man", and painted with ceramic pastels in yellow, white, garnet, brown, blue orange and green, has the same estimate.
Glazed on a painted background in shades of grey, brown, and black, a terracotta plate depicting a goat's head bears the prestigious stamp "Original Picasso print" on the back. It is valued at €21,000 to €32,000.
The two others feature a bull on a hexagonal terracotta tile (€16,000-€21,000), and a stylised bird on a plate painted in black and white (€15,000-€26,000).
"It's a lot," Mr Piguet said of the price. "But don't forget that these are works of art in their own right and unique pieces" without replicas.
"If you step back from Picasso's work and his drawings, which are becoming practically unaffordable today, you have here original works by Picasso that command a reasonable estimate."
New outlet
Picasso was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The prolific Spanish painter died in 1973, aged 91.
He created thousands of plates, platters, vases, pitchers, and other earthenware utensils in the Madoura ceramics studio, run by the pottery couple Georges and Suzanne Ramie.
After World War II, "Picasso was already an internationally-renowned artist," said Adeline Bisch Balerna, head of paintings and sculptures at Piguet.
"He had already opened up a huge number of avenues for all artists; the great, well-known works had been created, and he was seeking new means of expression for his art."
Picasso would visit the Madoura studio, meet Georges Ranie, and be "captivated by all the possibilities offered" by this new artistic outlet, she explained.
Mr Piguet is also auctioning two Picasso works "never before seen on the art market", from the same family friend's collection: "Serenade" (1919), an Indian ink and watercolour painting estimated at €21,000-€32,000, and the pencil drawing "Famille balzacienne" (1962), valued at €85,000-€128,000.
Unseen Klein
Meanwhile the contemporary art in the sale next week includes one of French artist Yves Klein's first blue monochromes, in what is its first appearance on the art market, according to Piguet auction house.
From 1959, "Monochrome bleu sans titre (IKB 328)", estimated at €106,000-€160,000, is painted in International Klein Blue, the deep blue hue developed by the artist himself.
"In daylight, it really has this luminous blue, this completely fascinating Klein blue. And when you put it indoors, you see it as a dark blue, almost midnight blue," said Bernard Piguet.
Mr Klein died in 1962 aged 34, following a series of heart attacks.
The work comes from the collection of the Swiss artist couple Muriel and Gerald Minkoff, who liked to exchange their works with their contemporaries.
It was discovered by their successors in their Geneva apartment, according to Mr Piguet.

Vanderpump Rules spin off relocates from Italy to VERY unexpected town in the UK
It's definitely going to be a change of scenery SCENERY SWITCH-UP Vanderpump Rules spin off relocates from Italy to VERY unexpected town in the UK Real Housewives of Beverly Hills legend Lisa Vanderpump's spin-off show, Vanderpump Villa, is set for a huge shake-up for its upcoming third series - relocating from the stunning castle in Italy to a farmhouse in the far less glamorous climes of Milton Keynes. In a move that will see fans scratching their heads, the show - which airs on Hulu in the US and Disney + globally - has ditched the fancy European settings of the previous two seasons for an altogether more down-to-earth base. 4 The super-glam Vanderpump Rules spin off is relocating from Italy to Milton Keynes Credit: Hulu 4 The show used to be set in this stunning Italian castle Credit: Hulu A telly insider said: "Bosses have settled on a location house in Newport Pagnell to film the next run. It's rural and will probably look impressive to US viewers who will just see the English countryside and think it's romantic, but anyone from Britain knows Newton Pagnell is a stone's throw from Milton Keynes' city centre - a place that couldn't be less showbizzy if it tried. It's a man-made commuter city at the end of the day. "Obviously Lisa Vanderpump is British, so you can understand why the showrunners wanted a Lady of the Manor type vibe for the upcoming episodes, but you would imagine they would have plumped for a mansion in the Cotswolds, or an old English castle in Kent." The first series of Vanderpump Villa was filmed at a French chauteau and aired last year. The second series relocated to Umbria and has been shot but is yet to air. Vienna to host Eurovision Song Contest 2026
The city will become joint fourth on the list of places which have hosted the contest the most times, alongside Copenhagen, Malmo and Stockholm, with Austrian broadcaster ORF hosting the event. Eurovision's 70th final will take place at the city's Wiener Stadthalle arena on May 16, after a bidding process for cities saw officials examine facilities, infrastructure and the ability to accommodate visiting delegations, fans and journalists. Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest, said: 'The EBU (European Broadcasting Union) is thrilled that Vienna has been selected as the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026. 'Vienna's reputation as one of the most musical cities in the world, and its location in the heart of Europe, makes it the perfect host city for the 70th Eurovision Song Contest. 'The city's exceptional Stadthalle was a great venue for the 60th contest in 2015 and we're very much looking forward to welcoming delegations, artists and fans alike back there next May as the world's largest live music event celebrates 70 glorious years of being united by music. 'Together with host broadcaster ORF and the city of Vienna we will create a spectacular celebration of music that will reverberate across the world.' Vienna's City Hall will host the event's opening ceremony on May 10, and go on to host EuroClub, the contest's pop-up, nightlife spot, while the square outside will host the Eurovision Village, an open air screening zone. Mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, added: 'In Vienna, we can be proud that our city has been selected by the EBU and ORF as the most suitable host city for one of the world's largest events. 'We submitted a convincing overall package with enormous accommodation capacities, excellent infrastructure, and a lot of experience in hosting international events. 'Additionally, we placed great emphasis on offering numerous Eurovision Song Contest events in public spaces that can be visited free of charge. 'As the mayor of Vienna, it is very important to me that cultural events are accessible to everyone, regardless of the size of their wallet. 'As the mayor of Vienna, I am, of course, pleased that Vienna was able to prevail and that Austria can represent itself again next year. We will have a great May together, I am convinced of that.' Further details including ticketing will be released later this year. Eurovision's 2025 final saw Israeli singer Yuval Raphael finish as runner-up, after her team said she was left 'shaken and upset' after pro-Palestinian protesters rushed towards a barrier while she was on stage. Following the incident, Swiss police confirmed two people were handed over to them and that they were later released, while the organiser, Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR, released a statement saying that a crew member was hit with paint but was 'fine'.
