Onyx opens chocolatey café in Springdale
Onyx Coffee Lab, NWA's coffee company institution, is returning to Springdale with a spacious version of its familiar coffee shops that will also offer desserts, cocktails, wine and chocolate made in-house.
The big picture: Onyx's addition to downtown Springdale is part of a string of restaurant-and-renovation development taking place over the past few years.
There's a "rising tide" mentality among the hospitality community here, Onyx co-owner Jon Allen told Axios, meaning there's a shared belief that everyone will do better as more people visit the area for these new offerings.
State of play: The new location opens fully on May 5. It occupies three stories of the former First Security Bank complex on Emma Avenue and has been two years in the making.
The walk-up window and outdoor seating opened to the public a couple of weeks ago and is already more popular than the owners expected, Allen said.
The intrigue: The new space dwarfs its typical locations, clocking in at a whopping 6,400 square feet. And Onyx's Terroir chocolate brand will also be headquartered here.
Andrea and Jon Allen started Onyx in 2012 in Springdale, but they had been without a location there since 2019, so their new mega-cafe is a homecoming of sorts. The coffee company's headquarters and roastery will remain in Rogers.
Zoom in: The ground floor hosts the primary café and most of the seating, but guests can also head down to the basement bar and watch Terroir chocolate being made. The basement will host wine and chocolate pairing events, along with talks from farmers from all over the world.
Onyx wine club members will also be able to stop by for their monthly bottles curated by Andrea Allen, offering club members a second location beyond Hail Fellow Well Met in Johnson.
Diners can expect full entrées for breakfast and lunch, plus desserts and chocolate.
Zoom out: For some, working remotely means plopping down all day at a coffee shop, and some businesses mitigate that with time limits or asking people to leave.
But Onyx is offering a free space upstairs with desks for those who want workspace, featuring a 16-seat boardroom table.
What they're saying: Allen said he hopes the new Onyx site will draw visitors from neighboring cities like Bentonville.

Walmart expands drone delivery to 5 southern cities
Walmart plans to start delivering items by drone in five major cities, the company announced Thursday from its new headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. The markets are Atlanta; Charlotte, North Carolina; Houston, Texas; and Orlando and Tampa, Florida. The big picture: The expansion is the retailer's latest move to tap technology to get goods to customers faster and easier, and it has real bottom line consequences for the retailer. "When we see a customer adopt fast delivery, their spend with Walmart doubles, and then when they use it four times, spend triples," the company's Chief Operating Officer Kieran Shanahan said Thursday. The latest: Working with drone provider Wing, Walmart will launch the drone service at 100 stores, building on existing operations in Northwest Arkansas and Dallas-Fort Worth. Wing drones can fly up to 6 miles from their store. Zoom in: The NWA service is now only available in Pea Ridge, via Zipline, a Walmart spokesperson told Axios. More NWA locations will come soon, but no details are yet available, she said. Zoom out: Wing has a designation from the FAA allowing pilots to operate drones outside a human's line-of-sight, which ultimately means they can deliver to a larger radius from a store and use fewer people. Between the lines: The service will be free when customers order through the Wing app. Items weighing up to 2.5 pounds can be delivered, but Wing is working on doubling the payload capacity. What they're saying:"As we look ahead, drone delivery will remain a key part of our commitment to redefining retail," Greg Cathey, senior vice president of Walmart U.S. Transformation and Innovation, said in a news release. "We're pushing the boundaries of convenience to better serve our customers, making shopping faster and easier than ever before." Flashback: Walmart and former delivery partner DroneUp announced last year they would end drone delivery hubs in Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Tampa to focus on perfecting the service in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It also ended pilot delivery projects in Bentonville and Prairie Grove. The bottom line: "Not only does the amount they spend triple, the number of categories and departments that they interact with increases, and their frequency of shopping with Walmart also increases," Shanahan said.

Rogers mayor calls for unified regional approach to housing crisis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — In a response to the Walton Family Foundation's recent report on housing affordability in Northwest Arkansas, Rogers Mayor Greg Hines says his city has already taken action. 'In Rogers, we've already done what the Walton Family Foundation is calling for: we've legalized multifamily and missing middle housing — and we've made it easy to build,' Hines said. Rogers' newly adopted Unified Development Code allows multifamily housing near all major growth areas, eliminating the need for rezonings and streamlining the approval process through administrative review, according to Hines. Hines said the results speak for themselves. 'A surge in multifamily development [is happening] without requiring a single rezoning,' Hines noted. 'No other city in the region is matching that pace, and it's happening because we've modernized the rules, not because we've relaxed the standards.' NWA 2050: As population climbs, so do housing costs in Northwest Arkansas The Walton Family Foundation's Our Housing Future report urges cities across the region to rethink zoning restrictions, encourage housing diversity, and invest in attainable housing strategies to maintain regional growth and workforce stability. Rogers' model, Hines suggests, is already proving that those recommendations can work. But the mayor also said that local efforts alone aren't enough. 'Housing doesn't stop at the city line, and neither should housing policy,' he said. 'We support a Council of Governments — or similar mechanism — to coordinate land use, infrastructure, and affordability across Northwest Arkansas. We're ready to lead, but we also need to act together.' With growth projected to continue rapidly across Benton and Washington counties, Hines says the time for coordinated, regional action is now.
