LAHORE:
A largescale plantation drive has been launched in Lahore to grow a forest on 978 acres along the Ravi River.
As part of the campaign, 105,000 trees have been planted on 144 acres, with the process continuing at an accelerated pace. The Punjab government has set a target of planting 634,000 trees to improve air quality as part of the fight against smog.
Provincial Senior Minister Marrirum Aurangzeb stated that a 'green wall' covering 978 acres will be established to combat pollution and convert Lahore into a green, environmentally friendly city. She said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's 'Green Revolution' is a long-term initiative for ensuring a cleaner and healthier future for Lahore.
Highlighting the urgency of afforestation to tackle air pollution and extreme heat, the senior minister stressed that the expansion of the green belt along the river will provide fresh oxygen to residents.
She urged the people to actively participate in the campaign, stressing that every tree planted will contribute to the vision of a smog-free and greener Lahore.
The Punjab Forest Department and Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) are expanding the scope of the plantation campaign to implement natural solutions for air pollution.

CM urges public support for plastic-free Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has appealed to the citizens to extend their complete cooperation in launching the Plastic and Pollution-Free Punjab campaign on the World Environment Day. The aim of the campaign is to inform and impart awareness to the general public regarding the use of life-threatening plastic. Students will be encouraged to use cloth bags and paper products as alternatives to plastic. Tree plantation activities were also organised to celebrate the World Environment Day. In a message, the chief minister urged the youth to become an environment-friendly force. "The Zero Plastic Campaign is not just a one-day event, but we need to make it a part of our daily routine," she added. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stated that Punjab's first climate policy, vision and action plan had been implemented. An environmental endowment fund worth Rs15 billion has been established for start-ups and businesses. The province has also launched Pakistan's first Environmental Protection Force. Mentioning the steps taken for environmental improvement in the past year, she said a plastic management cell had been established, which was ensuring a ban on single-use plastic. Online registration of plastic manufacturers and sellers has been started. Millions of vehicles have been registered through emission testing certification. The CM said 50 air quality monitoring stations have been installed across the province and thousands of youth are actively working in cities and villages under the Climate Leadership and Development Internship Programme to create awareness about pollution. A GIS squad has been established to ensure environmental protection with the help of artificial intelligence. She said four fuel testing labs have been established to check the quality of petrol to prevent smog. Sprinkler systems are being installed at under-construction buildings to prevent dust. In addition, 15 water quality monitoring stations are being established to monitor rivers and rainwater drains. Environmental benefits are also being achieved through recycling and e-bikes.

Key infrastructure projects face delays

Two major signal-free road infrastructure projects in Rawalpindi, worth over Rs6.5 billion, have missed their completion deadlines, causing significant inconvenience to residents. These include the Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road and underpasses on Mall Road at KTM Chowk, Mall Plaza, and the pedestrian underpass at Medicine Market. While the flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk has been completed, carpeting and beautification work remains pending. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had set a deadline of May 31 for its completion, but the project remains unfinished. This project alone costs Rs2.3 billion. Similarly, the Rs4.38 billion underpasses and pedestrian underpass project on Mall Road, originally set for completion in 45 days, remains incomplete even after 100 days. As a result, access to key locations including hospitals, the Mega Medicine Market, PIA, State Life, and Cantonment offices has been disrupted. Zahid Bakhtawari, President of Anjuman Shehriyan Rawalpindi, criticised the delay, sayinag the situation has become unbearable for patients and businesses. Promises made to complete the work in 45 days have not been fulfilled. PML-N MNA from Cantt, Malik Abrar Ahmed, stated efforts are ongoing to prevent further delays. He emphasized that in high-level meetings, authorities have been directed to speed up the work. If both projects are completed within the next 15 days, a joint inauguration could be held, pending the Chief Minister's schedule. While C\&W Department officials had earlier confirmed the May 31 deadline, they are now unwilling to comment on the delay.
