A largescale plantation drive has been launched in Lahore to grow a forest on 978 acres along the Ravi River.
As part of the campaign, 105,000 trees have been planted on 144 acres, with the process continuing at an accelerated pace. The Punjab government has set a target of planting 634,000 trees to improve air quality as part of the fight against smog.
Provincial Senior Minister Marrirum Aurangzeb stated that a 'green wall' covering 978 acres will be established to combat pollution and convert Lahore into a green, environmentally friendly city. She said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's 'Green Revolution' is a long-term initiative for ensuring a cleaner and healthier future for Lahore.
Highlighting the urgency of afforestation to tackle air pollution and extreme heat, the senior minister stressed that the expansion of the green belt along the river will provide fresh oxygen to residents.
She urged the people to actively participate in the campaign, stressing that every tree planted will contribute to the vision of a smog-free and greener Lahore.
The Punjab Forest Department and Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) are expanding the scope of the plantation campaign to implement natural solutions for air pollution.

The chief minister urged students to apply for Honhaar Scholarships and secure education with dedication. 'Please apply with belief, study with passion, and never stop believing in what you can achieve. Punjab Minister of Education Rana Sikandar Hayat in December 2024 said more than 68,000 students from 436 educational institutions had applied for the scholarship programme.

The Punjab government has launched a major crackdown on bird activity in the vicinity of Lahore Airport to enhance aviation safety, declaring several neighbourhoods 'No Bird Zones' under a new initiative. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz issued the directive to the city's district administration, Punjab Wildlife Department, and the Environment Protection Agency for coordinated action. Localities including Eastern Bypass, Manawan, Hospital Dahori Wala, PKLI, Chungi Amar Sidhu, Ichhra, and Chah Miran have been placed under strict monitoring. Officials said these areas have been ring-fenced aerially to create protective airspace for commercial flights. Bird strikes, particularly during take-off and landing, pose a persistent safety hazard. The new policy aims to mitigate this by reducing bird presence around low-altitude flight paths. The Wildlife Department has already ordered its field rangers to enforce new restrictions. Strict regulations are being imposed on nearby slaughterhouses, poultry farms, bakeries, and leather-processing units. These businesses must now comply with environmental controls, including a ban on open disposal of animal waste and hides. Additionally, feeding birds in public areas, on rooftops, and at shrines has been outlawed. Residents are also restricted from keeping or flying large numbers of pigeons. Garbage dumping near the airport has been banned, and covered waste bins are now compulsory in specific zones. Officials warned that any activity attracting birds in these areas will be treated as a breach of public safety. CHINIOT: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz distributed cheques of Rs 10,000 each to 1,129 sanitation workers of Chiniot district under the Punjab Suthra initiative. The ceremony was held in three separate events at the tehsil level, where Members of Provincial Assembly, Additional Deputy Commissioner General, and Assistant Commissioners distributed the cheques to the sanitation workers. During the ceremony, the assembly members praised the sanitation workers for their hard work and dedication, particularly during Eid-ul-Azha, when they sacrificed their holidays to maintain cleanliness standards in the district. They acknowledged the workers' efforts in making the streets and roads of the city and villages clean, presenting a practical example of a clean Punjab. On this occasion, the sanitation workers thanked CM Maryam Nawaz for the cash prize and reiterated their commitment to keeping the district clean with the same spirit and dedication in the future. The district administration and waste management company also distributed appreciation shields and certificates among the officers, recognizing their efforts in maintaining cleanliness standards in the district.
