Why the new Sundowns striker is yet to play
New Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Lebo Mothiba signed for the club in March 2025. Why has he not yet made the matchday squad?
Speaking to the media after last Saturday's 2-0 win over Cape Town City, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso explained that the 29-year-old has been out of action for quite some time.
'Mothiba is a high-quality player who, unfortunately, comes from a long period of absence and non-competition. [He comes] from a big injury and a long period of recovery.
'We are patient, and he is also patient,' the Sundowns mentor said via FARPost . 'He is also anxious, and we are also anxious, but we know what we have to do and we are going to do it right, so that he can join us in the future.
'It's a player that we need to treat like a crystal, very carefully. But we are willing to do it and a lot. He is a wonderful person and human being. We are happy to have him amongst us. But we need to give him all the conditions so that he can recover and help us in the future.
'But I still have expectations that he can play for us before the end of the championship. For you to understand, yesterday [Friday], the players that were not with us made a joint training session with the Diski Challenge team, and he played 15 minutes in that match, free, without conditioning,' the Sundowns tactician concluded.

Phiri, a 30-year-old central midfielder, has played in Europe since 2013. His locations included Denmark, Turkey and France. The Johannesburg-born player's contract with Ligue 2 side Guingamp ends on 30 June, and no renewal has been offered. Latest rumours: Orlando Pirates and Rulani Mokwena Kaizer Chiefs' somewhat forgotten midfielder Edson Castillo is expected to say goodbye to the Betway Premiership giants before next season. Castillo joined the club in July 2023 from Monagas SC in Venezuela. The then 29-year-old proved to be a goal-scoring midfielder, scoring five goals in the 2023/24 Betway Premiership season. Castillo's fibula injury kept him out of the Kaizer Chiefs team until the final part of the season. After just seven games last term and 41 games since his arrival, Amakhosi are reportedly considering parting ways with Castillo. This would free up a foreign spot as the club works to find international signings for next season. Amakhosi to say goodbye to three foreign players? According to iDiski Times' leading reporter, Lorenz Kohler, the 31-year-old Castillo is eager to guarantee improved game time before committing to Kaizer Chiefs next season. Time out on sidelines has Etzebeth raring to go for Boks' home season
Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has allayed fears around his fitness ahead of the international season as the double Rugby World Cup-winner looks forward to adding to his South African record 131 caps in a busy year for the national side. The 33-year-old has been one of the Springboks' most influential players in the last decade and a key element of their back-to-back World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023, but is coming off a club season with the Durban-based Sharks plagued by injury. 'I didn't have such a good run at the Sharks with injury and concussion that kept me out for about four-and-a-half months,' Etzebeth said on Wednesday. 'It wasn't ideal, but I recovered and got a few games towards the back-end of the season. I just suffered a small setback in training just before the [United Rugby Championship] semifinal. 🗣️ "It's actually a difficult one to plan around." Rassie Erasmus on how the Springboks will be approaching the Barbarians match next Saturday. Click below to get your tickets now 👇 — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 17, 2025 'That was just a minor one and I'm very comfortable for the Springbok season ahead.' Etzebeth is an enforcer in the Springboks pack, with his ability at line-outs, powerful carries and organisation in defence. Far from looking at this past season as a wasted one, he suggests the time on the sidelines will leave him fresher for Tests against Italy [two] and Georgia next month, and South Africa's Rugby Championship title defence. 'It's not ideal that I didn't play as much as I wanted to, but at the end of the day your body is resting up a bit,' he said. Is 2025 the year that we see a changing of the guard in the Springbok front row? With Steven Kitshoff retired and injuries to the likes of Frans Malherbe and Trevor Nyakane, a few newer faces will definitely get their chance 💪 — SuperSport Rugby (@SSRugby) June 18, 2025 'We play week in and week out and the guys who aren't injured get bruised and battered. I'm a bit fresher. The body is feeling good.' South African players arguably play more rugby than ever before with their involvement in the United Rugby Championship and European club competitions. The Springboks also have 14 matches lined up this year, starting with a non-cap clash against the Barbarians in Cape Town on June 28. 'It's a big topic in South African rugby about our squads [size],' Etzebeth admitted. 'There is the Currie Cup, URC, Champions Cup. Do we have enough players in our squads? 'That's for the coaches to decide and I don't think they're too happy, but it's out of my [control].'

Nervous times for Cape Town City after Casric score late to share spoils
Casric Stars earned a point from the jaws of defeat as they netted late to force a 1-1 draw in their Premier Soccer League promotion-relegation playoff against Cape Town City at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in KwaMhlanga outside Mbombela on Wednesday. The Citizens thought they had done enough for a victory when they held the lead for 70 minutes after Prins Tjiueza netted in the 26th minute, but Sphamandla Mlilo scored from a penalty in the last kick of the match in the 97th to ensure the points were shared. The result will feel like a defeat for City who defended the entire second half to protect their lead and in the process invited pressure from Casric. All the teams have two points after two matches. Casric will look for a win when they host Orbit College at the same venue on Saturday in their third match.
