Police activate licence plate scanners for crime detection on Highway 6

Stationary automated licence plate readers (ALPR) are now operational at the intersection of Highway 6 and Beedahban Miikun in Whitefish River First Nation.
The system scans licence plates entering and leaving the Manitoulin District, capturing infrared and colour images at a rate of up to two plates per second. Designated officers with the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service can flag plates linked to serious investigations, including missing persons cases, homicides, Amber Alerts, human trafficking, drug trafficking and organized crime.
'It is important to clarify that this system is not to be primarily used to detect speeding violations or other offences under the Highway Traffic Act,' police said in a news release.
Unflagged plates are automatically purged after seven days to comply with privacy laws.
The initiative, which began May 30, was developed in consultation with Ontario's privacy commissioner and aims to enhance public safety and assist law enforcement agencies nationwide. Signage has been installed to notify the public of the ALPR's presence.
In the release, police urged community members to report crimes anonymously through Crime Stoppers or directly to local police at 705-377-7135, saying the most effective way to protect the region is to share information.

Authorities said the damage caused by drug trafficking is 'real and lasting.'
'Drug trafficking brings with it serious consequences, including home invasions, violent assaults, homicides, addiction, homelessness and overdose deaths,' police said.
'Together, we can make a difference,' added Police Chief James Killeen.

Driver charged with careless driving after crash on Hwy. 401 in Kingston

$500K in drugs seized in Lethbridge bust; 2 arrested
Lethbridge police seized more than $500,000 worth of drugs from a home in the city's north end on May 28, 2025. (Supplied) A man and a woman from Lethbridge are facing charges after police seized more than $500,000 of cocaine, ecstasy and other drugs. Lethbridge police say the bust was the result of a drug-trafficking investigation involving a home in the 600 block of 10 Street North. On May 28, police executed a search warrant at the property, finding 3.6 kilograms of cocaine, more than 1,600 MDMA (ecstasy) tablets, 46 grams of ketamine, 425 grams of Psilocybin, 16,000 black stock cigarettes, six kilograms of cannabis, 500 cartridges of cannabis extract and $16,000 in cash, believed to be the proceeds of crime. Police also found other drugs, including methamphetamine and cannabis and tobacco products during a secondary search. A man was arrested at the home. At about the same time, police located a vehicle whose driver was 'engaged in activity consistent with drug trafficking' and stopped it in the 1100 block of 19 Street South. The woman driving the vehicle was arrested and searched, with police finding $2,300, believed to be the proceeds of crime. Bradshaw Jerome Balog, 37, and Aspen Michayla Woodman, 26, are both facing multiple drug possession and trafficking offences. The pair were released from custody and are expected to appear in court on June 19.
