Here's what you need to know about Augusta traffic during Masters Week

John Ussery used to encourage Masters Week motorists to avoid using GPS and keep their eyes on Augusta's roads instead of checking their phones.
Now, there's an app for that.
"For years and years my mantra was 'turn off your GPS, turn off your GPS,' but now it's 'turn on your GPS' and get the QR code and download the app," said the assistant director of the city's Traffic Engineering Division.
Introduced last year, the QR code will direct users to available parking and provide not only which problem spots to avoid but also how to get around them.
Ussery shared details about that Wednesday and other changes to daily Augusta traffic during the one week of the year where the world's eyes turn to the Masters Tournament.
"This plan has been in place for quite a while now," Ussery said. "Every year our goal is to take what we've done, take what we've learned from the previous year and adjust it a little bit, hopefully just to improve final plans a little bit, improve the experience a little bit, and make sure the patrons have an easy experience getting to the parking area."
One idea that worked last year is coming back this year. Local motorists might already have noticed a temporary traffic signal where Washington Road meets River Ridge Drive, next to National Hills Baptist Church.
In 2024 the Augusta National Golf Club unveiled its first and only official hospitality venue, Map & Flag, with admittance costing $17,000 per ticket.
The $17,000 question: Would you buy a ticket to the Augusta National's Masters hospitality house?
Its location, in the former Electrolux building at National Hills Shopping Center, raises pedestrian traffic at a busy intersection with no crosswalk. The temporary signal solved the problem.
The roundabout that joins Berckmans Road and Ingleside Drive will be conditionally closed to allow morning motorists to turn left from Ingleside onto Berckmans to reach Wheeler Road.
Also, there will be a new rideshare lot at the corner of Washington and Berckmans roads. City workers call it the "TGI Friday's lot" because a restaurant location was on the 1.5-acre site. The Augusta National bought the land in 2015 for $2.5 million.
Overall, the traffic plan is "much the same as it was last year," Ussery said.
The Washington Road off-ramp from Interstate 20 will be closed each day from 7 a.m. to about 9 a.m. Traffic from Atlanta will be directed to Exit 200 to drive the short skip along River Watch Parkway to Alexander Drive.
Depending on traffic volume, Alexander Drive will be closed near its railroad crossing so patrons can take River Watch to downtown, then to the John C. Calhoun Expressway and up Washington Road to the tournament.
About 20 changeable message signs will help direct drivers to available parking areas.
The timing of traffic signals also changes during Masters Week because the mission of traffic control also changes. The goal above all is to move traffic safely and efficiently to and from Augusta National.
"So if you try to do something opposite of that, you're going to wait a while," Ussery said. "There's only so much we can do with signal timing."

Augusta National Was Not Happy With Golfer's Rental Car Choice

Augusta National Was Not Happy With Golfer's Rental Car Choice originally appeared on The Spun. Augusta National is probably the most exclusive golf course in the country - and maybe the world. The host of The Masters has a lot of rules. Many of them are known, some are not. Fans are not called fans; instead, they are called patrons. No cellphones are allowed out on the course. Food prices have remained extremely low. But Augusta National is also extremely strict in other areas. One professional golfer revealed that Augusta National was not very happy with his rental car choice for the week at The Masters. Laurie Canter, who turned pro in 2011 but played The Masters for the first time this year, opened up about his experience at Augusta National during an appearance on the "Life on Tour" podcast. The 35-year-old golfer said that Augusta National did not appreciate the rental car choice he made for the week. "There's green jackets everywhere," Canter said. "First day, we turned up in our rental car, and we got told, 'You are given a Mercedes this week, and we would appreciate if that car didn't return to the property'." Hey, if you're given a Mercedes to drive for the week, you might as well use it. But it would be interesting to hear what kind of rental car he had picked out in the first place. Clearly, Augusta National didn't want it on the property for the week. Later in the week, Canter admitted that he and his caddie got in some trouble for using a machine on the putting green. "Normally on the putting green we get our machine out, roll our ball. My caddie got that out and immediately someone was on him saying, 'What are you doing? You can't do that,'" Canter said. Augusta National is obviously strict, but that's in part why people love it. Rory McIlroy Shows Faith in Luke Donald Amid Ian Poulter's Ryder Cup Warning

Rory McIlroy was recently spotted soaking up the sun at a beach club in Saint-Tropez, where the Masters champion gave the perfect reply to a fan asking about his green jacket. "It's on the yacht," McIlroy replied as captured in a viral video posted by NUCLR Golf on X. But while his vacation video went viral on social media, McIlroy's recent interview with David Novak reflected that he certainly hasn't drifted from the next big battle at Bethpage Black. (Photo by) More Getty Images The Northern Irishman became the first automatic qualifier for Team Europe, marking his eighth consecutive Ryder Cup. "I've played in seven of them. I really hope I play in seven more. I don't know if seven is achievable, but it's the best experience you can have as a professional golfer. It's amazing," McIlroy shared on the 'How Leaders Lead with David Novak' podcast. He spoke about the intensity of representing Europe and how being "sort of talisman for the European Team and trying to lead by example and trying to set the tone and ... bring the rookies along" makes him absolutely "love that stuff." But that was not all. The five-time major winner also showcased his faith in the European team captain, Luke Donald, giving a strong reply to doubters. Rory McIlroy shows confidence in Luke Donald Just a few days ago, Ian Poulter publicly warned Team Europe to brace for the sheer volume and intensity awaiting them at Bethpage. "Luke (Donald) has got a venue in Bethpage Black that is going to be very loud, very raucous. We've had numerous events at that location in the past, so they certainly know what they are going to be in for," Poulter told Sky Sports. But McIlroy's string of praise for Donald and his team showcased the solid status of Europe. (Photo by) More Getty Images "The one thing about Luke was his demeanor, his tone, his whole attitude throughout the week (Ryder Cup 2024) never changed," McIlroy told Novak during the interview posted on YouTube. "That's the sort of, you know, steady ... rock-like leadership that ... if you're a team and you're looking at your captain and he looks like that all the time, that just gives you so much confidence," he continued to tell Novak as quoted. "Whether he (Donald) thinks he knows what he's doing, but he looked like he knew what he was doing, right?" McIlroy added how the European captain "just had this air of complete confidence and comfort and every time a player looked (at Donald), they just got the sense that, you know, no matter what happens, this guy's got everything under control. And that is, you know, to have a leader like that is amazing." Donald's calm presence in Rome left a lasting impression last year, and that kind of leadership might be exactly what Europe needs in New York as team Keegan Bradley gears up to bring back the trophy home.
