Is RFK Jr. Being ‘Controlled'? Former Running Mate Nicole Shanahan Makes Surprising Claim After Surgeon General Pick
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s former running mate Nicole Shanahan claimed on X she thinks there's someone 'controlling' the health secretary's decisions—and specifying it wasn't President Trump—as she lashed out against Trump's controversial pick for Surgeon General, Casey Means.
Then-presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (right) with running mate Nicole Shanahan during ... More an event in Oakland, California, on March 26, 2024.
Shanahan, the ex-wife of billionaire Google cofounder Sergey Brin, posted on X on Wednesday night after Trump announced Means as his nominee nominated for Surgeon General, after his first choice withdrew her nomination.
The pick is 'very strange' and 'doesn't make any sense,' Shanahan wrote on X, claiming she was 'promised that if I supported RFK Jr. in his Senate confirmation' as health secretary that neither Means or her brother Calley Means—now an advisor to Kennedy—'would be working under HHS or in an appointment (and that people much more qualified would be).'
Shanahan wondered whether 'RFK very clearly lied to me, or what is going on,' claiming, 'It has been clear in recent conversations that he is reporting to someone regularly who is controlling his decisions (and it isn't President Trump).'
She went on to describe the Means siblings as having 'something very artificial and aggressive about them,' likening them to being 'bred and raised Manchurian assets.'
HHS directed Forbes to Kennedy's post on X responding to Means' nomination, in which he described Means as a 'breath of fresh air' who was 'born to hold this job' and claimed she 'will provide our country with ethical guidance, wisdom, and gold-standard medical advice even when it challenges popular orthodoxies.'
Shanahan is a Silicon Valley lawyer and entrepreneur who gained prominence and wealth from her marriage to Google cofounder Sergey Brin. The pair later divorced in 2023—allegedly because Shanahan had an affair with Elon Musk, which both have denied—and are wealth is Forbes estimates her wealth as possibly close to $1 billion. She became Kennedy's running mate during his failed 2024 presidential campaign, running as an Independent after previously donating to Democrats, and without previous political experience. She has maintained a combative political profile since, even threatening to fund primary opposition against any senator who voted against Kennedy's confirmation. Like Kennedy, Shanahan has expressed skepticism about vaccines and support for 'alternative' medicine, and The Daily Beast notes she has also recently shared conspiracy theories about chemtrails released into the air by the government.
Means is a wellness influencer best known for founding the company Levels, which provides wearable glucose monitors for tracking blood sugars, and for authoring the book 'Good Energy,' which NPR notes rails against 'traditional' medicine's ability to combat chronic illness. She is considered to be part of Kennedy's 'Make America Healthy Again' movement that eschews traditional evidence-backed medicine in favor of more alternative treatments, with The New York Times noting she has also expressed skepticism of vaccines. Means' appointment has become controversial even among some on the right, with far-right activist Laura Loomer decrying her as a 'WOO WOO WOMAN' on X on Thursday. Trump told reporters Thursday he had picked Means as surgeon general because of Kennedy, saying he picked her because 'Bobby really thought she was great,' adding, 'I don't know her, I listened to the recommendation of Bobby.'
Shanahan's post decrying Means comes after she previously praised the new surgeon general nominee and her brother. 'Calley and Dr. Casey Means, siblings on a mission to end corruption and help Make America Healthy Again,' Shanahan wrote on X on Sept. 6. Calley Means responded to the post, writing, 'Thanks Nicole - we are inspired by you and proud to be on this mission.'
Kennedy has been one of the most controversial members of Trump's Cabinet, given his controversial views on vaccines. His agency has drawn scrutiny since taking office for steps like floating a registry of Americans with autism and announcing changes for vaccine approval, raising alarm among critics that the health secretary is molding the nation's health services to fit his vaccine skeptic views. Trump announced Means as the surgeon general after his first nominee, Fox News contributor Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, withdrew her nomination, which NPR reports was amid concerns about how she had represented her credentials as a physician. Trump said on Truth Social Wednesday that Nesheiwat will still serve in 'another capacity' at HHS.

Roseville-based company hosts program to guide high schoolers to high-demand trade careers
ROSEVILLE – A unique summer program is giving high school students a head start on a stable, well-paying career, not in a college classroom, but on the job site. Monday marked the first day of a week-long course designed to introduce students to careers in construction. It's part of the Heavy Metal Summer Experience, a national program focused on showing students the wide range of opportunities available in the skilled trades. The goal is to expose young people to career paths that don't require a four-year degree. Instead, students can pursue training through trade schools and apprenticeship programs, often avoiding student debt altogether. The Roseville-based company Intech Mechanical is hosting the program for the second year in a row. For one week, many of the company's staff step into the role of instructors, sharing real-world knowledge and guiding hands-on training. According to Gary Myers, a partner at Intech Mechanical and director of the local program, the effort is both timely and necessary. "Our industry needed to do a better job of promoting the construction industry as a whole," Myers said. "And teaching these high school kids there's a lot of opportunities, whether that's being a sheet metal worker, plumber, pipe fitter, electrician, construction worker, laborer, whatever that is." The program comes at a critical time. The skilled trades are facing a significant shortage of workers as older generations retire, leaving tens of thousands of job openings across the country. Fields like electrical work and pipefitting are experiencing especially high demand and programs like this are helping prepare the next generation to step in.

Marines temporarily detain man while guarding LA federal building
LOS ANGELES — Shortly after they began guarding a Los Angeles federal building Friday, U.S. Marines detained a man who had walked onto the property and did not immediately hear their commands to stop. The brief detention marked the first time federal troops have detained a civilian since they were deployed to the nation's second-largest city by President Donald Trump in response to protests over the administration's immigration arrests. The Marines were activated earlier this week but began their duties Friday.

Even Before His Return to the White House, Trump Was Becoming a Crypto Czar
Donald J. Trump got a small taste last year of life as a cryptocurrency mogul. His stake in World Liberty Financial, the cryptocurrency firm that he unveiled during the presidential campaign, earned about $57 million, making it one of the Trump family's most lucrative investments in 2024. And a licensing deal involving a related industry, NFT collectibles, produced another $1.2 million. Mr. Trump's wife, Melania, contributed to the family income, receiving $217,000 in licensing fees related to a digital token. The results, detailed in Mr. Trump's mandatory financial disclosure report for 2024 and released on Friday, previewed the crypto riches he is now poised to reap as president. Since Mr. Trump took office a second time this year, his crypto fortunes have skyrocketed through a series of business ventures that pose unprecedented conflicts of interest. Not only is Mr. Trump a major operator in the crypto industry, he is also its top policymaker — and a symbol of its rising stature in Washington. Even as the president seeks to deregulate and promote the industry, Mr. Trump's personal net worth has soared through crypto. Though the information in the financial disclosure ends as of Dec. 31, 2024, World Liberty announced this year that it had sold more than a half-billion dollars' worth of its coin, a significant portion of which the Trump family was entitled to. Separately, Mr. Trump developed a personal cryptocurrency known as $TRUMP, a memecoin launched days before his inauguration, that on paper could be worth billions of dollars. Want all of The Times?
