Musk to shift focus from DOGE to Tesla after profits plunge
Elon Musk told investors he will refocus on Tesla and begin scaling back his involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in May.
unbranded - Newsworthy
There has been a tsunami of news coverage over the first 100 days of President Donald Trump's time in office. Depending on whom you ask, it's either been an American nightmare of hateful politics or the best thing to happen to the country in modern politics.
USA TODAY Opinion has been covering the 100th day milestone with our usual vigor. Some of you even helped us do it. But while you can expect more of that coverage to roll out this week, we think it's time to give Elon Musk some attention.
He did, after all, take up much of our collective focus these past three months. Whether using DOGE to lay off federal workers, taking the political stage with a literal chainsaw or watching Tesla's stocks plummet, Musk has been very busy trying to help Trump establish and enforce the MAGA vision for America.
Your Turn: Trump is doing an amazing job. America needed an overhaul. | Opinion Forum
And now, it appears Musk's time is winding down as he prepares to refocus on things like Tesla. Early news reports were that Musk would stay away at the 130-day mark at the end of May, but it now appears he might go part-time.
Either way, it seems his role is diminishing. So, today we're asking our readers – that's you – how they feel about Musk.
Is Elon Musk fading away or here to stay in the Trump administration?
This might be the last time we ask, so feel free to let your voice be heard. Fill out the form below or email us at forum@usatoday.com with the subject line "Forum Elon Musk." We'll use some of your responses as part of our upcoming Forum roundup.
We'll even get your creative juices flowing. Consider some of these questions:
Do you think Elon Musk has helped the country shrink our federal government?
Do you think everything Elon Musk did on behalf of Trump was all for show?
Are you glad or upset to see Elon Musk step aside from his DOGE work?
How comfortable are you with a private citizen having that much power in our government, regardless of who the president is?

10x Returns Lost: Redditors Reveal Which Stocks They Sold Way Too Early
Investing in stocks isn't easy. You have to stay on top of multiple companies and predict how the future will unfold. While investors confidently hold on to stocks during bullish cycles, many of these same investors fold during bearish markets. Many Redditors discussed stocks they sold too early in a recent post that is gaining momentum. Some Redditors lost out on massive, life-changing returns just by exiting reliable companies during corrections. "If I waited a year, I would be 10x," one Redditor stated when talking about buying Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) in 2020 and selling at breakeven in 2022. Don't Miss: GoSun's breakthrough rooftop EV charger already has 2,000+ units reserved — become an investor in this $41.3M clean energy brand today. Invest early in CancerVax's breakthrough tech aiming to disrupt a $231B market. Back a bold new approach to cancer treatment with high-growth potential. One investor regretted selling Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares eight years ago. Another investor sympathized and said they also sold Tesla eight years ago, citing 10% daily swings as the main reason for exiting. Tesla was one of the biggest winners during the pandemic and has gone up by more than 1,000% over the past eight years. While some posts contained nothing more than people talking about their losses, this one contains a valuable lesson. If you invest in a company for the long run, you have to endure volatility. Sharp price swings are especially common for growth stocks that have tremendous long-term potential. Ignore the price swings and consider where the company will be in the next decade. Another Redditor mentioned that they owned 1,000 shares of Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) about 18 years ago. Netflix doesn't receive as much attention since the FAANG acronym is out of style, but it's still a top-performing stock, especially for early investors. Trending: This Jeff Bezos-backed startup will allow you to become a landlord in just 10 minutes, with minimum investments as low as $100. Netflix shares have gained anywhere from 30,000% to 50,000% since 2007, depending on when investors bought their shares. That's a massive gain to lose out on, but 2007 was right before the Great Recession, so it was common for people to exit the markets frantically. One commenter offered an interesting perspective on Netflix stock that highlights how some investors were thinking at the time. "There were a lot of experts over the years, especially in the beginning, saying how other media companies were going to make [Netflix] irrelevant or basically put them out of business." Those concerns were unfounded, and it goes to show that some people forecast the absolute worst-case scenario. These overblown narratives may have caused some investors to abandon ship, especially during the Great Recession. Some people posted impressive gains in the comments section that don't feel so good knowing how the assets performed in the long run. One investor bought a bunch of Bitcoin at $0.50 apiece and sold them for $250 to buy a house. It's the type of gain you rarely get, but it still feels like the Redditor missed out on a great opportunity with Bitcoin now above $100,000 a coin. Another Redditor thought they did well when they bought Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) shares for $2-$3 dollars and sold at $9.50. It's a 3x profit, but AMD stock now goes for more than $100 per share. It's easy to beat yourself up about missing out on 10x returns, but most investors should love a 3x return. While it makes for entertaining content, dwelling on missed opportunities isn't the right approach for building long-term wealth. ICE director says Americans should feel safe July 4
(NewsNation) — Under the Trump administration, immigration enforcement and deportations have been a high priority, even as the administration has faced protests over mass deportations. Recently, there has also been a focus on arresting foreign nationals with suspected terrorist ties. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons told NewsNation that while there have been recent headlines focusing on those suspected of connections to terrorism, including Iranian nationals, it doesn't mean there has been a shift in priorities. 'What you're seeing is ICE doing their mission as a whole,' he said. 'We've always done targeted enforcement, and we've always focused on high-risk countries, you know, not just Iran, but, you know, People's Republic of China, Syria, various countries on the African continent.' Lyons attributed the number of suspected terrorists in the country to the Biden administration. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recently told governors that there is a heightened threat level following the U.S. strike on Iran, and it's critical to go after these suspects. 'The only way ICE is going to do that is if we treat every immigration violator the same and we take action on them,' Lyons said. Lyons said he couldn't put a number on how many of those suspected terrorists were Iranian, but the focus has been on identifying people who are national security threats and detaining them. While concerns about sleeper cells have been raised, Lyons said the administration has taken great strides in securing the border. 'I think Americans should be confident that under this administration, under the leadership of Secretary Noem, you have federal law enforcement agencies that are out there every day protecting the homeland,' Lyons said. 'I think the American public needs to be aware. They just need to be cautious, but they need to go on living their lives because they wake up in the greatest country every day.' ICE agents have faced protesters in cities where increased immigration raids have occurred, including Los Angeles. The situation there prompted President Donald Trump to federalize California's National Guard. Despite the opposition, Lyons said morale is high among agents, in part due to the backing from Trump and Noem. 'Sure, we have a lot more work than we ever had, but the men and women of ICE are sworn law enforcement officers who signed up to do a job. And under this administration, they're allowed to do their job again,' Lyons said. Regarding legislation in California that would prevent ICE agents from covering their faces to conceal their identity, Lyons said he would like to work with elected officials to protect agents who have been doxxed by protesters. 'We've shown what happens when these officers and agents' families' information gets out there. They don't want to wear those masks, but it's for their own safety,' he said. 'I would love to sit down with lawmakers and come up with some solution to that, but until I can ensure the men and women of ICE and their families are going to be protected, I'm going to let them do whatever they need to do to protect themselves.' When it comes to protecting the U.S., Lyons said agents are prepared for the upcoming July 4 holiday. 'The American public should feel safe going to any one of these large fireworks celebrations, for instance, because DHS has worked with local and state partners for days, weeks, and months leading up to ensure that we have all the most current threat intelligence,' Lyons said. The White House has set a goal of 3,000 arrests a day, but Lyons rejected the label of 'quota' and said the goal is really for agents to complete their mission. He told NewsNation the increased number has to do with assistance from other agencies and the focus the Trump administration has put on immigration. 'There's a lot of damage that was done in the last four years. What I can say is, though, now that we're allowed to do our job, and we have so many more resources, I think you're going to see an increased, steady climb with the increase in numbers,' Lyons said. We're going to be able to put max effort towards it, and you're going to see us achieve what the president wants and reach that goal.' Subscribe to 'On the Border,' where Ali Bradley covers developments on the southern border with a focus on human and drug smuggling, immigration enforcement efforts, and the failure to control the influx of migrants.

Grimsby taps biz leaders to help attract new investment
The Town of Grimsby has tapped 10 distinguished business leaders to help boost investment in the community. 'I believe what I offer and what (the town) is intending is our perspective in working with companies around North America to possibly bring them to Grimsby,' said Grimsby resident David Arkell, who is president and chief executive officer of 360 Energy Inc. in Ancaster and one of the first group of business ambassadors recently announced by the town. 'The objective of the program is to actually help Grimsby grow in a very thoughtful way.' Arkell said his company works with businesses across North America and Europe, helping them reduce energy costs, lower their carbon footprint and purchase energy more efficiently. 'My background and experience can help support not only bringing people here, but what else can be done to enhance our current situation here in Grimsby,' Arkell said. He said Ontario's energy grid plus the town's proximity to the QEW and the American border are all selling points for Grimsby. 'Most Canadians don't know Ontario has one of the cheapest and cleanest energy grids and I'm talking about electricity, natural gas and water,' Arkell said. 'That's something we take for granted; other people around the world don't and they're looking for that.' Arkell noted high tech businesses are good targets to bring to the area. 'The world's changing,' he said. 'It's not all heavy industry.' Arkell said he will be making a presentation to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on July 2 in Luxembourg about energy security and how Canada can support that. 'How Canada can be very helpful, not only bringing people here to help out in that but bringing companies from Europe because maybe they don't have secure energy in Europe,' Arkell said. The other ambassadors are: 'When I was approached to submit an application to possibly become a business ambassador for the Town of Grimsby, I thought if I could be of assistance to our community, then why not,' Bain said. 'The quality of life, wonderful people and access to markets make it a top contender for business looking to expand their footprint.' Bain said he will be looking at business plans and watching for opportunities during his travels around North America and beyond. 'Whenever there is opportunity, I will wave the Grimsby flag and share what our town has to offer, hopefully connecting them with Town staff and the economic development office who will provide specific information and opportunities,' Bain said. 'With a full complement of ambassadors from different sectors, there will be plenty of communication which can lead to opportunities for the town. If we don't share what we have to offer, people will make choices to set up shop elsewhere.' Mayor Jeff Jordan said the business ambassadors are passionate leaders who connect businesses, spark opportunity and champion the town as a place to live, work and invest.
