Around The World In A Bottle: Parfums De Marly's Fragrances Inspire Global Escape

Forbes2 days ago
To say that I have something of an obsession with great fragrances is far from an understatement. There's nothing that makes me happier than generously spraying on a scent that makes me smell great, lifts my mood, and often transports me to another place. So many of the best perfumes out there evoke destinations worldwide, source their ingredients from countries everywhere, and are inspired by travel, whether it's a specific place or type of trip.
There's no brand that better embodies this philosophy than the Paris-based Parfums de Marly- I've fallen in love with the French fragrance house in the last year. Julien Sprecher established the brand in 2009 and took inspiration from his love of perfumery and 18th-century French art de vivre. The collection he has created features distinctive scents, each with its own compelling story, but all guaranteed to get you noticed
I had a chance to catch up with Yvan Jacqueline, President of Americas, who told me more about the ingredients the brand uses, where they come from, and the best Marly scent to take for every type of vacation.Tell me about the inspiration behind Marly? What is the brand based on?
Parfums de Marly is a story of passion for French heritage and Haute Parfumerie. The brand draws inspiration from the opulence of 18th-century France, particularly the Château de Marly, a private palace reserved for the King of France and his inner circle. Louis XIV, the famous Sun King, imagined and built the château as the most intimate of all the royal residences. An invitation to Marly, far from the strict etiquette of Versailles, was a most precious privilege. It offered the joy of belonging to a circle of aesthetes, the pleasure of festivities, and the ultimate luxury of breaking free from convention.
Our founder, Julien Sprecher, envisioned a revival of that golden era through a modern lens. Each fragrance honors that spirit—regal, refined, and resolutely contemporary. Parfums de Marly is an ode to uniqueness, a celebration of individuality, and an invitation to embrace the ultimate luxury: the freedom to be yourself!
What ingredients do you favor in the fragrances?
As a Maison, we seek ingredients that have both nobility and personality. Whether it is Damascena rose or lavender from Provence, it is always about contrast and duality. Parfums de Marly offers a wide olfactory palette, from woody and spicy to floral and ambery.
One of my favorite compositions is Althaïr. It embodies a balance of warmth and strength, blending Bourbon vanilla from Madagascar with refined spices and creamy woods. It is a fragrance with presence—elegant, unexpected, comforting.
Where do you source these ingredients from?
We work closely with some of the most prestigious fragrance houses and producers around the world. Our natural ingredients are sourced from regions renowned for their excellence: Madagascar for vanilla, as I mentioned earlier, Bulgaria for rose, India for jasmine, and Réunion Island for geranium, to name just a few.
But sourcing is only part of the story. What truly matters is how we compose with these ingredients. That's where the magic happens. And that's the amazing talent of our founder and Artistic Director, Julien Sprecher.
Can you describe a few of the scents and what destinations they're inspired by?
Each Parfums de Marly fragrance captures a unique mood and that's why they may evoke a personal destination, transporting you through scent, even though they haven't been created based on a specific destination in mind. I will give you my own personal connection as fragrance is so intimate.
Delina reminds me of the elegance of springtime in Versailles. With its lush notes of Damascena rose, lychee, and rhubarb, it evokes the blooming rose gardens of that iconic French estate. It is fresh, vibrant, yet endlessly captivating with its magnetic ambery base.
Valaya takes me to the soft warmth of the Mediterranean, such as Greece with its majestic columns. With a radiant blend of mandarin essence, white floral accord and white musk, it seems to capture the serene beauty of coastal escapes rich in heritage and history.
Layton transports me the spirit of the English countryside. Its refined character, balanced by a bright apple accord and lavender essence, reflects the sophistication and gentle energy of a stroll through rolling hills and historic estates, all grounded by an earthy patchouli base.
What's the perfect perfume to pack for a beach getaway? Why?
Without hesitation, I would say Delina. You can never go wrong with it! Its fresh facets and crisp rose notes make it perfect for a day at the beach, while its ambery base is ideal for those relaxing moments after the sun sets. It is one of the most versatile fragrances that I know, and consistently one of the greatest compliment-getters. I am especially excited to introduce Delina in a travel-size luxury spray, a perfect nomadic format to carry the iconic Delina signature wherever you go, including seaside escapes.
What about a hiking trip?
Castley, definitely! It captures the spirit of the adventurer, inspired by the explorers and trailblazers of the 18th century France. There is a sense of vitality and openness in the scent—fresh yet grounded, dynamic yet composed. Breezy citrusy and mineral notes contrast with the rich, spicy Timut Pepper, ambery Labdanum and Akigwalawood, unveiling an intense side. It is a vibrant fragrance that paves the way for a bold ascent.
A ski escape?
For the slopes, I would choose Althair. It is a warm, cocooning embrace amid the crisp mountain air. Its rich, velvety notes wrap you in comforting luxury, making every moment on the snow feel both adventurous and intimate. Perfect for those chilly days when you want to feel grounded yet effortlessly elegant.
A European escapade where I'm city hopping?
Depending on your taste and the mood you want to set, I would recommend either Percival or Valaya Exclusif. Percival is fresh, vibrant, and effortlessly versatile. With bright bergamot essence and aromatic notes, it is perfect for daytime explorations across Europe's dynamic cities, from the bustling streets of Milan to the historic charm of Prague. For evenings or when you want something a bit more enveloping, Valaya Exclusif is a great choice. Its warm composition of velvety almond and white flowers reminds me of the timeless atmosphere of Europe's grand palaces and candlelit dinners. Both fragrances are companions for discovery, adapting to the diverse rhythms of a European city-hopping escapade.
A getaway to Asia?
I would say Delina La Rosée. This beautiful fragrance offers a brightness and complexity that harmonizes beautifully with the vibrant energy of Asia and the humid climate found in some countries. It feels like a delicate floral caress on a warm day in cities like Singapore or Tokyo. It is fresh, elegant, and effortlessly radiant.
How often does your role have you on the road?
Very often! I spend a significant part of the year traveling across the Americas — from New York to Mexico City to São Paulo — meeting with our teams, partners, retailers, and clients. Travel is a constant in my life, but it also inspires me deeply. It is an essential way to stay connected with our community and to understand fragrance desires across diverse cultures. I particularly enjoy hosting masterclasses with customers, as they offer a beautiful opportunity to share my passion for Haute Parfumerie and engage authentically with fragrance lovers.
What are your favorite destinations to travel to?
I have a soft spot for Mexico City. It's vibrant, layered, and full of art and soul. But Dubai holds a special place in my heart as well, since I lived and worked there for many years, and my daughters were born there. And of course, I love Paris! There's nothing quite like walking through the Tuileries toward the Louvre, leaving a memorable scent behind you. I am very proud that Parfums de Marly became a patron of the Louvre Museum last year, supporting the preservation and celebration of 18th-century masterpieces.
What are your travel essentials?
Aside from my passport, I never travel without my best suit — it sets the tone for any occasion. I always travel light, with a carry-on only. I never check in luggage. My phone, of course, keeps me connected on the go. On board, I make it a point to sleep as much as possible. It helps me recharge and manage my energy, especially on long-haul flights. And of course, I always bring a curated selection of travel sprays to suit my mood and the place I am visiting. Fragrance is memory, and I like to create one for every journey.

Netflix's New Releases Coming in August 2025

An Oxford-set college rom-com from the guy behind The Inbetweeners; the return of one of Netflix's biggest ever shows; Genndy Tartakovsky's latest adult animated project; Vanessa Kirby's return to more intimate dramas about the human condition; a documentary that promised to shed new light on the Jussie Smollett hate crime incident; and a murder mystery film featuring several British and Irish acting icons are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in August. Kicking off August is the rom-com My Oxford Year, which focuses on the tried and trusted formula of a young American girl heading to stuffy old Europe and finding love with some impossibly handsome and terribly charming guy, so it's almost guaranteed to find a huge audience. In this instance, Sofia Carson plays Anna, an ambitious American student at Oxford University whose life is changed when she meets impossibly handsome and terribly charming local Jamie played by Corey Mylchreest. The film is directed by Iain Morris (yes, the same guy who co-created and co-wrote The Inbetweeners) and is written by Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne, based on the novel by the same name by Julia Whelan. The cast also includes Dougray Scott, Catherine McCormack, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Hugh Coles. My Oxford Year debuts on Aug. 1. More from The Hollywood Reporter Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'FUBAR' Canceled at Netflix After Two Seasons British Tough Guy Ray Winstone to Receive Sarajevo Festival Award Former Netflix Executive Alleges Gender Bias and Sexual Harassment in Lawsuit Netflix's big launch this month is season two of the monster hit Wednesday, which premieres Part 1 on Aug. 6. Wednesday season one is amongst Netflix's most watched shows ever, and the streamer has already confirmed a third season and plans for spinoffs. The sophomore outing for the show sees Jenna Ortega's kooky Wednesday Addams return for another year at the dark, mysterious and very Gothic Nevermore Academy. The creative team that made season one of Wednesday such a huge hit are all back, including creators/showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and of course EP and director Tim Burton who gave the show his unmistakable look and feel. New cast additions include Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley and Billie Piper and returning castmembers include Emma Myers, Fred Arminsen Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luiz Guzman and Isaac Ordonez. Genndy Tartakovsky is one of the biggest names in animation, and the man behind Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars and Hotel Transylvania has a new animated feature launching on Netflix on Aug. 13. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Fixed sees Tartakovsky in full adult comedy mode, the logline reads, '[the film is about] Bull, an average, all-around good dog who discovers he's going to be neutered in the morning! As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls!' The stellar voice cast includes Adam DeVine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, and Bobby Moynihan. The Invisible Woman will be very visible on Netflix in August, with Vanessa Kirby debuting her new film Night Always Comes on Aug. 15. The Oscar-nominated British actress is on a career hot streak at the moment, starring in big budget spectacles like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Napoleon and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning as well as critically acclaimed dramas such as Pieces of a Woman, and her latest, which she also produced, is more in the vain of the latter film that scored Kirby an Academy Award nomination. Directed by Benjamin Caron, Night Always Comes is a gritty crime thriller about a desperate woman (Kirby), who over the course of a night risks everything in order to secure her home and her future. The feature is an adaptation of Willy Vlautin's 2021 novel and is written by Sarah Conradt. The cast also includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephen James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly, and Eli Roth. On Aug. 22, Netflix launches the sure-to-be-controversial and discourse-breaking The Truth About Jussie Smollett? The documentary film purports to tell 'a shocking true story of an allegedly fake story that some now say might just be a true story,' casting new light on the absolutely wild incident that involved Empire actor Jussie Smollett who in January 2019 claimed to have been victim of a viscious hate crime. The doc features interviews with police, lawyers, journalists, investigators and with Smollett. The Truth About Jussie Smollett? comes from RAW, the producers behind the viral docs Don't F**k with Cats and Tinder Swindler. Another big movie release for Netflix this month is The Thursday Murder Club, a feature based on the 2020 murder mystery novel by Richard Osman. The film, directed by Chris Columbus, features an all-star cast of British and Irish acting legends including Oscar-winners Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley, as well as Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Richard E. Grant and rising Naomie Akie. The Thursday Murder Club tells the story of four 70-somethings, with unique past lives, who decide to solve a murder in a retirement home. Tapping into some of the ingredients that made films like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and even Netflix's own recently released Nonnas a hit, The Thursday Murder Club debuts on Aug. 28. Movies added to Netflix in August include American Pie, American Pie 2, Anaconda, Clueless, Dazed and Confused, The Departed, Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Groundhog Day, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, Megamind, Minions, Rush Hour, Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, Thirteen, Weird Science, Wet Hot American Summer, Wyatt Earp, The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Panoramic carriages and unlimited champagne: Are these the best train journeys in the world?

Rail travel is fast becoming the most pleasurable way to holiday, with faster connections, improved services and new itineraries. But some trains are pulling out all the stops. From panoramic carriages to opulent sleeping compartments, here are five trains around the world voted the best by travellers. Two are also planning new routes for 2026. Explore evergreen forests and glacial lakes on this panoramic Canadian route The ranking, chosen by readers of the magazine Travel + Leisure, highlights five trains with 'a reputation for providing a curated, high-end experience on scenic routes'. The number one spot went to the Rocky Mountaineer, which winds its way through British Columbia and Alberta in Canada, as well as Colorado and Utah in the United States. The standout feature of this train is the glass-panelled windows and roof, allowing passengers to fully take in staggering scenery like soaring canyon walls and towering mountain peaks. One of the most popular routes scythes through the Canadian Rockies, connecting Vancouver to the mountain town of Banff. Next year, the operator will add another limited-time route. Between June and July 2026, to coincide with FIFA World Cup events taking place in Vancouver, the train will travel between Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. Named 'Passage to the Peaks', the trip is ideal for exploring 'evergreen forests, sparkling glacial lakes, and towering mountains', according to the company. Passengers can choose the package as a two-day journey with an overnight stay in a hotel, or extend the trip for up to nine nights. Travel like royals on the British Pullman in the UK Second place went to British Pullman, run by the operator Belmond. An icon of historic luxury, this service travels sedately around the UK. Passengers are whisked back to the 'golden age of travel' aboard the 1920s carriages featuring antique-style marquetry, vintage lighting and heritage upholstery. Destinations and excursions are equally distinguished, from historic cities like Bath and York to stately homes like Blenheim Palace and Sandringham and iconic events such as the Chelsea Flower Show and Royal Ascot. The train is also billed as an 'epicurean escapade' serving up British fare with an innovative twist. Think roasted heirloom cauliflower, confit of English Chalkstream trout, hand-rolled truffles and a great British cheeseboard. If you choose to travel on the British Pullman, you join the ranks of previous passengers that include Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip. Sip wine in the most sophisticated surroundings on the Napa Valley Wine Train Another classic journey comes in third place. The Napa Valley Wine Train has been chugging through California's vineyards since the 1980s. The 100-year-old railcars let passengers travel back in time as they sip wine sitting on antique furniture at white-tableclothed dining tables. Related New train route to link Prague, Berlin and Copenhagen from 2026 in another boost for European travel Polish railways PKP launches direct rail link from Warsaw to Croatian coast The train offers daytime or nighttime experiences. During the day, you can take trips of between three and six hours for three, four or seven-course meals or afternoon tea. Some experiences include wine pairings, from a rich Cabernet to an oak-aged Chardonnay, sourced from five Napa Valley American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). In the evening, the same multi-course dinner options are offered, as well as a special 1920s-themed Murder Mystery dinner. Free-flowing champagne and midnight lobster rolls on the Orient Express The undisputed icon of luxury historic rail travel takes the fourth spot. Another Belmond train, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express now offers dozens of overnight routes around Europe. Some of the most popular routes include the five-nighter Paris to Istanbul, and the one-night Brussels to Venice and Paris to Rome. Whatever the journey, the experience is one of unrestrained, unapologetic extravagance. The carriages date from the 1920s and 30s with distinguished features like refined marquetry, René Lalique glass, and Art Deco fan-shaped lamps. Passengers are treated like royalty, from the free-flowing champagne and 24-hour butler service to the lavish evening parties and lobster rolls for midnight brunch. Seasonal dining menus are designed by Chef Jean Imbert with gourmet local ingredients and classical precision - turbot in champagne sauce, brioche with pollen Chantilly cream, and a prime selection of caviar. See Andalusia in sumptuous style on board the Al Ándalus train Spain's Al Ándalus sleeper was one of the country's first luxury trains when it began operating in 1985. The wagons were originally bought from the British royal family. Now run by state-owned rail company Renfe, passengers can journey sedately around the Andalusia region in sumptuous Belle Époque style, sleeping in the refurbished 100-year-old carriages. There are also four lounge cars dating from 1928 and 1930, which dazzle with scarlet velvet upholstery and soft gilded lighting. In the restaurant, dishes exalt Spanish ingredients like olive oil, sherry wine, and Jabugo Iberian ham. Starting in 2026, the itinerary will include new stops, beginning and ending in the Spanish capital. It will run between April and October with trips of seven days and six nights. You can choose to follow the itinerary in either direction, from Madrid to Seville or vice versa. During the dreamy journey, passengers stop at some of Spain's most magnificent cities and storied attractions. In the La Mancha region, there is a visit to an artisanal cheese factory and a wine cellar, while in Jerez de la Frontera, guests attend a famous equestrian ballet set to Spanish music. Related I took a 7-day trip from Paris to Istanbul on Europe's newest transcontinental train Espresso Riviera: This night train will whisk passengers from Rome to the French coast this summer In Aranjuez, you can visit the Royal Palace and its gardens, while in Córdoba, passengers take a tour of the extraordinary Mosque-Cathedral. The experience on board is a fabulous time-warp. The suites and rooms are inside carriages that were built in France at the beginning of the last century to take the members of the British monarchy between Calais and the Côte d'Azur.

Tony Hadley dismisses the prospect of a Spandau Ballet reunion

Tony Hadley doubts that a Spandau Ballet reunion would work. The 65-year-old singer quit as lead singer of the True band in 2017 due to "circumstances beyond my control" and was surprised to hear his ex-bandmate Gary Kemp suggest earlier this year that he would like to do another tour. Tony told Classic Pop magazine: "Really? That's news to me. "I don't think it would work. I haven't seen Gary, Martin (Kemp) or John (Keeble) in eight years. Steve (Norman) is the only one I'm vaguely in contact with. "We had some good times, but unfortunately there were some bad times as well. That's just life. We had some good laughs on the last tour, then unfortunately John fell ill and it wasn't the same without him. That was difficult." Tony doesn't want animosity amongst his former Spandau Ballet bandmates but is happy to be focusing on his solo career now. He said: "I wish Gary, Martin and John well, but I'm happy doing what I'm doing. I love the freedom I have now, the fact I can go from a bit of swing to a bit of rock. You can't do that within the confines of a band." Spandau Ballet had a huge hit with Gold in 1983 and Tony believes that the track continues to be popular as it is easy for people to sing along to. He explained: "You can't fail with Gold. There are times I get distracted singing it. I will suddenly come to and think: 'God, what's the second verse?' I get round it by going: 'Right, you lot can sing it...' However, Tony is still baffled that the band chose not to perform the song during their set at Live Aid in 1985. The singer said: "My one issue with Gold is, why didn't we play it at Live Aid? I think it's because we didn't think we could reproduce the orchestral touches at Wembley. Whatever, it didn't make any sense to me why we didn't do it." Hadley has been involved in music for over 40 years and believes that his distinctive voice has been pivotal to his success. He explained: "I've always had a big voice and it's always sounded like me. That gives me an identity, whether you like my voice or not. "My influences are all brilliant voices, but I'm not interested in technicality. Loads of singers can do more vocal twiddles than me and are technically better, but that's not what I'm interested in."
