‘We waited greedily for his novels': Mario Vargas Llosa, a revolutionary of Spanish-language fiction

The Guardian14-04-2025

The early 1960s was, for my generation in Argentina, an age of discovery when, in our mid-teens, we learned about sex, metaphysics, the Beatles, Ezra Pound, Che Guevara, Fellini's films, and the new literature of Latin America. In the bookstore around the corner from my school, there began to appear novels with black-and-white photographs on the dust jackets whose Spanish-language authors, while acknowledging Borges as the fons et origo of all literary endeavours, attempted to find in the 19th-century European realists new ways to depict the troubled reality of Spain and South America.
One of those novels was La Ciudad y los Perros (The City and the Dogs, oddly translated into English as The Time of the Hero) by a young, unknown Peruvian writer, Mario Vargas Llosa, who, in 1962, had won the recently created Premio Biblioteca Breve in Spain. Our literature teacher, while encouraging us to explore the transgressive fields of surrealism and fantastic fiction, thought that this novel was too extreme for adolescent imaginations: too much youthful violence; too much murky sex; too much questioning of authority. There had been nothing like it in Spanish-language fiction before. A fierce indictment of Peru's military system, incandescent with rage against the hypocrisy of the established order as mirrored in Lima's most prestigious military academy (which the author had attended), it was also the chronicle of an adolescent rite of passage into the ranks of the commanding patriarchy. The book so incensed the Peruvian authorities that, in the tradition of the city's founding fathers, an auto-da-fé was ordered and dozens of copies were burned in the academy's courtyard. At the very start of what was labelled by canny publishers as the 'boom' of Latin-American literature, Vargas Llosa's book was recognised as a modern subversive classic.
Until then, the so-called 'novel of protest' in the literatures of Latin America had Zola as its model. Under the large shadow of the author of La Terre and Germinal, writers such as Ciro Alegría and José María Arguedas had written about the lives of those whom our European culture had taught us to deny. Vargas Llosa didn't follow Zola but rather chose Flaubert as his guide, writing a decade later a splendid essay, The Perpetual Orgy, in which he argued that Madame Bovary kickstarted the modern novel by establishing an 'objective' narrator who, because they refused to preach, gave the illusion of telling a story that was true.

We waited with greedy expectation for Vargas Llosa's next novels, The Green House (1966) and Conversation in the Cathedral (1969), and later Captain Pantoja and the Special Service (1973) and the erotically humorous Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (1977), all the time trying to discover who this man was who, in public life, swayed his political alliances from left to right, all the time remaining committed, in his fiction, to basic precepts of human empathy.
The young Vargas Llosa, like so many South-American intellectuals, had supported Castro's revolution, but after the imprisonment of the poet Heberto Padilla he declared himself an opposer to the Cuban regime. Almost two decades later, Vargas Llosa became the head of the centre-right party Movimiento Libertad, and entered into a coalition with two other centre-right politicians. In 1990, as candidate to the presidency, Vargas Llosa lost to Alberto Fujimori, who was later sentenced to 25 years in prison for human rights abuses, and later still, unlawfully pardoned. From then on, Vargas Llosa restricted his political activism to his frequent newspaper columns and, much more subtly and effectively, to his fiction, for which he was awarded, in 2010, the Nobel prize.

I'm obsessed with the gold shell detail." ‌ ‌ Also making its debut for the collection was a buttery yellow crocheted strapless dress, which set Michelle's tan off a treat. Then, there was a stunning off-white, tasselled off-the-shoulder number, which looked like a dress, but was actually a top and a skirt, as Michelle explained: "This colour is a WOW! And the asymmetrical hemline is really flattering. (It's a skirt and top so you have to buy separate ladies) Oh, and it's currently in the SALE!" Fans couldn't get enough of Michelle - and her wardrobe- as many flocked to Instagram, praising the actress for how good she looked. One gushed: 'How does anyone look that amazing after just having a baby?', while another joked: 'You look absolutely stunning…I am still trying to get my post-baby figure back, and my baby is 17 this year!' Michelle and Mark have jetted off to Spain for Palma's first trip abroad as they told fans it was "Princess P's first holiday". Palma Elizabeth Wright. 06.03.25'. ‌ Mark also spoke about his little girl on his Heart Breakfast show while chatting to his friend and fellow dad, Olly Murs. Recalling the moment he first held his daughter, he also praised his wife for being a 'superhero'. He continued: 'That moment when I held her in my arms, it gets me emotional now thinking about it... Amanda Holden, 54, sends fans wild with her latest bikini pics

Amanda Holden sent fans wild as she stripped down to a tiny pink bikini in her latest social media video. The 54-year-old Britain's Got Talent judge donned matching pink heels to strut around a swimming pool on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca. Looking more like she was walking down a catwalk, the age-defying broadcaster and actress looked tanned and toned as her long blonde hair billowed behind her in the short clip, as Calvin Harris' latest track Blessings played over the top. In the caption, Amanda revealed she was in Majorca to film an ad campaign for Revive Collagen. She wrote: "Shooting a new campaign for @revivecollagen #mallorca," before revealing her bikini was by swimwear brand Melissa Odabash, which is loved by celebrities. And fans couldn't quite believe what they were seeing, as one wrote in the comments: "Imagine being in your 50's and looking that good in a bikini," as another replied: "Right?" As many more posted heart and flame emojis, a third said: "Looking fabulous!!!" A fourth declared her "perfection", as a fifth commented "what a body." A sixth joked: "Look amazing, wish I could walk in those shoes!" Her celebrity pals were equally in awe. Ex-EastEnders' star Jo Joyner wrote: "You're ridiculously hot" followed by a flame emoji. "There she is," said former The Only Way Is Essex star Sam Faiers. Vicky Pattinson simply wrote: "AMANDA!!!!" with four flame emojis. While her Heart FM co-star, former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts commented: "Jheeez." It comes days after Amanda went 'naked' during her radio show following yet more Ofcom complaints about her outfits on Britain's Got Talent. Her appearance even made her co-host Jamie Theakston do a double take. As she sat in her DJ chair on Thursday morning, Amanda said on air: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" Jamie replied: "Do you know what... you are wearing clothes, aren't you?" But though it looked like she might not be, Amanda was in fact just wearing a pink strapless dress which wasn't visible behind her monitor. Joking about her choice of outfit for the day, Amanda said: "I just looked [at myself] and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" Amanda's BGT finale dress, which looked almost bridal in a white silk fabric with a low cut front, wasn't a hit with some viewers at home who complained that both her and co-star Alesha Dixon's frocks were "too revealing for a family show". Ofcom revealed they'd received 72 complaints in total. But thought she is regularly under fire for her risque outfits, Amanda has vowed to never tone down her fashion choices. In July 2017, Amanda wore a plunging see-through Julien Macdonald dress, which went on to be the most complained about TV moment of the year. She's previously revealed how all her outfits are checked before she goes on stage and joked there's an even a 't*t committee' who tell her whether she's alright to wear a dress or not. "There's a whole body of people that knock on my door and come and stare at my chest before we go on air," she shared. "There's a t*t committee. There are so many brilliant people, they come down, knock on the door and there's the lady, who's the producer, who says, 'Mandy, it looks great'." In another interview, Amanda told Closer magazine: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" On her most complained about dress, she added: "It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but, oh no, I will not be covered up."

Snoop Dogg shares plan to open a burger van outside major British football club

Snoop Dogg said he would like to bring a pop-up burger to Celtic Park as he believes football fans would love it - and he even shared his perfect recipe for a good burger Snoop Dogg has revealed he hopes to open a burger van at Celtic Park – and said he would like to serve fans himself. The West Coast rapper has previously spoken of investing in the Glasgow football club, similar to Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds ' involvement with Wrexham FC. Snoop Dogg, 53, has already published a cookbook and claims to have spoken to chef Gordon Ramsay about a possible venture in Glasgow together – but he has now revealed he wants to set up a fast-food van at Celtic's stadium in the city's east end. ‌ He has described Celtic supporters as "special" and the best fans in European football, and said he identifies strongly with the club's mascot Hoopy the Hound – describing it in a previous interview as a "match made in heaven". The keen sports fan worked as a correspondent for NBC at the Paris Olympics last year, has launched two youth football leagues, and has been a vocal advocate for pay equality for female athletes. ‌ He told the Sunday Mail that Celtic fans would support the burger van and that it would become a foodie "Paradise" – the nickname give to Celtic Park. He said: "I would love to bring a pop-up burger (van) to a sports stadium to show fans that food at stadiums can be good. "It's got to be Celtic Park, man. The secret to a good burger is the love in the preparation. The ground beef has got to be mixed with some secret spices, then add a good quality cheese and some maple-cured bacon. "The Celtic fans are gonna love it, and to make sure they are just right, Snoop is going to be serving them himself." But he said he would not be taking his culinary ventures to Celtic's Old Firm rivals at Ibrox. Snoop told the Sunday Mail: "Am I going to bring my burgers to Rangers as well? Nah, I think we will give that a miss." The confession comes after the rapper offered to swoop in and heal the rift between estranged brothers Prince William and Prince Harry. ‌ Earlier this year, the rapper, whose links to theroyals go back years, as he was asked to perform at William's stag party, said he'd be more than happy to act as peacemaker between the estranged pair. "Harry and William, I have known for a long time now," he said. "Harry asked me to perform at William's bachelor party but I couldn't make it. Anything they want to perform at now, I am there. They are brothers, man. Anything that gets them in the same room and being brothers again will be worth it. Life is too short to not make things right, and if Snoop can help heal that relationship, then let's do it." The Drop It Like It's Hot star also opened up about his friendship with David Beckham, which dates back over 30 years, calling him his "brother" - and he said "Uncle Snoop" will always be there for his kids Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 13, too."You know in this industry you get a lot of acquaintances, but real long-lasting friendship is a rare thing for real," he began. "We have been friends for over 25 years, he isn't a friend to me anymore he is a brother to me. From the first time we met we had a good connection, and our friendship just went from there. It kind of helps we both love sport, food, and music, but as the years went on our friendship became deeper."
