The Scottish caravan park 'just a short walk' from one of country's best beaches
As we enter the middle of July, the summer season is officially halfway over. That means time is running out to book a family holiday before autumn rolls around.
When it comes to staycations in Scotland, the only limit is your imagination. Whether you are looking for a quiet woodlands retreat or a fun coastal getaway, you have plenty of options.
However, sometimes nothing beats a good old-fashioned caravan park. One new park that has already earned positive reviews from visitors is Melvich Bay Caravan Park.
The 25-acre caravan and campervan park is located along the north coast of Sutherland, on the popular North Coast 500 scenic driving route. According to staff, the site is approaching 70 per cent occupancy.
Director and local farmer Angus Forbes, who launched the business in March with two co-directors, commented: "Demand from visitors has been exceptional. Customer satisfaction has been overwhelming and we're heading towards 66 per cent occupancy on the site.
"We were only expecting 25 per cent occupancy in the first three months. We've even had an enquiry from a couple interested in coming up from the central belt to get married on our park—which is unexpected—but flattering!"
Melvich Bay Caravan Park benefits from panoramic views of Orkney and the North Atlantic Ocean. It lies on the outskirts of the village of Melvich, "a short walk away" from the sandy Melvich Beach.
As reported by the Daily Record, Melvich Beach was recently named among the best beaches in Scotland by The Times. The newspaper praised the bay for being well-suited to campervans and described it as a "wide curve of ochre sand".
Melvich Bay Caravan Park owners launched the business to address a shortage of facilities for travellers on the increasingly popular North Coast 500 route. They hope to grow bookings month by month on reputation, recommendations, and the appeal of its pitches.
The park features 30 pitches of 12 square metres for camper vans, motorhomes, and other visitors. It charges £35 for an overnight stay, with amenities including modern toilet and shower facilities and chemical waste disposal.
Among the happy visitors to Melvich Bay Caravan Park are Kelvin Pitt, whose Google review describes the outlook of the beach as "second to none". The holidaymaker adds that he would "recommend this site all day long".
With demand well ahead of expectations, the directors are increasing their focus on sustainable tourism. In a letter sent to local stakeholders, including Highland and Islands Enterprise and Highland Council, Melvich Bay Caravan Park director Malcolm Morrison calls for the Leave No Trace campaign—which urges North Coast 500 holidaymakers to take their litter home—to be "beefed-up".
Morrison wrote: "The North Coast 500's Leave No Trace policy already makes it clear on its website that illegal disposal of waste is unacceptable, but it is the belief of my co-directors and I that a substantially beefed-up campaigning should be developed and broadcast widely throughout the region ahead of this year's busy tourist season."
He added: "While thousands of annual visitors to our Highland communities have been an economic boon, the environmental disruption of litter and, worse, recklessly discarded biological waste, has been a rightful source of local complaint."

Warning to UK holidaymakers after Greece announces 'shut down' as temperatures soar
Temperatures are currently soaring across the popular tourist hotspot. UK holidaymakers heading to Greece this summer are being warned after the country announced a shutdown in areas popular with tourists. As the country battles a severe heatwave, authorities took the decision to close certain (literal) hotspots. Iconic Athens landmarks the Acropolis will be closed and outdoor work in parts of the country will also be halted. The ancient monument will be off limits until 5pm on Tuesday for the 'safety of workers and visitors, owing to high temperatures. ' According to the Greek Ministry of Labour outdoor work will also be halted from 12pm to 5pm in multiple regions, including islands popular with UK holidaymakers, reports Birmingham Live. Michalis Keskinidis, a 43-year-old courier told the AFP news agency: "Days with a heatwave make my job more difficult. 'We drink a lot of water, use electrolytes, and take breaks whenever possible.' According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - the UN body responsible for assessing climate change - it is now "unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land". Climate scientist Professor Ed Hawkins from Reading University warns that "1C of global warming does NOT mean that heatwaves 'just' get hotter by 1C. Over large parts of the UK, global warming means that heatwaves are 3-4C warmer". Climate projections from the Met Office indicate that "hot spells will become more frequent in our future climate, particularly over the southeast of the UK. Temperatures are projected to rise in all seasons, but the heat would be most intense in summer." The BBC Weather team says: "Friday's update could provide more clarity about the most likely conditions for next week and give a further outlook for the period after that which might indicate if we are going to see cooler conditions towards the end of July and into August." The Met Office expects a largely dry and sunny day away from the extreme northwest of Scotland where there will still be some cloud and patchy drizzle. Hot elsewhere in the sunshine but slightly cooler along eastern coasts. Its forecast says: "Dry and clear for most with some locally high temperatures, making it feel muggy for some. Some low cloud and sea fog around coastal areas." Non Scots share what they 'think about Scotland' as tourists give their verdict
Visitors have revealed what they make of Scotland. Non-Scots have revealed what they "think about Scotland". Visitors shared their favourite aspects of the country online. There are many things that those of us who live in Scotland take for granted. It is only those that visit for a holiday who see it through fresh eyes. On Saturday, July 5, a user on social forum Reddit questioned what tourists make of the country. Writing on the AskTheWorld community, they asked: "What do non-Scots think about Scotland? Hit me." The post has since received more than 216 comments. Many holidaymakers and other non- Scots were keen to share their own thoughts about the country. The user added: "A full Scottish breakfast is a great hangover cure." A full Scottish breakfast is comprised of bacon, sausages, Lorne sausage, black pudding, haggis, baked beans, fried mushrooms, tomatoes, and fried eggs. It is usually accompanied by toast and tattie scones. A second Reddit user posted: "When I think of Scotland I think of fun but hardworking people with a good sense of humour, stunning landscapes, and food that warms you after a cold day." A third echoed: "Scotland was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landscapes I have ever witnessed. And the people were mighty fine too." Another wrote: "I spent a week driving around Scotland in summer 2007 and I loved it. As an Irish person, there is something pleasingly familiar about the place. Great country." Scotland is known for its rugged and varied landscapes, from its Munros to its beaches. Among the many picturesque destinations in the country are Ben Nevis, Glen Coe, and the Isle of Skye—but every corner of the country is home to magnificent beauty spots. Meanwhile, many Reddit users singled out Scots' language and accents. As reported by the Daily Record, there are many words and phrases that are commonly spoken in Scotland that are not used anywhere else in the UK or the world. One Reddit user joked: "My idols when it comes to descriptive swearing. We might say **** and **** a lot in Australia, but we're nowhere near the masters of swearing." Someone else wrote: "Hottest accents on the planet. And gorgeous men with hairy knees." Another posted: "I love them, good humour. Cool as accents." Many others mentioned whisky when sharing what they thought of Scotland. There are around 150 distilleries located around the country, many of which produce whisky that is enjoyed all over the world. One user commented: "Natural beauty, cool people, great whisky. I feel like most people are cool with Scotland.
