Your Health, Your Choice: Cycling is a great way to get fit and have fun
It is certainly hard to imagine just how fit you need to be to complete it.
Luckily you do not need to be anywhere near as fit as Tadej Pogačar, who won this year, to enjoy cycling.
Cycling is great to do if you are looking to do more exercise.
It will give you more cardiovascular benefit than swimming, build some leg strength and is also non-weight bearing - easier on the joints than running.
And it is a skill that we haven't forgotten, it's like riding a bike.
Most of us cycled when we were growing up.
This was a time of meeting up with friends and having fun and adventures.
And this is what exercise should be like when you are grown up; it shouldn't feel like a chore but instead something to look forward to.
Most of my rides are with friends, having fun, exploring new roads and the mandatory stop at a cafe for a coffee, and yes, a piece of cake.
We are lucky in Taunton as it is so easy to get started again on a bike if it has been a while since you last cycled.
We have the canal, running all the way to Bridgwater if you want, although you could just go as far as the tea rooms at Maunsel Lock.
If you haven't got a bike then you could hire one from Parrett Trail Bikes in Langport, they even have e-bikes to make it even easier to get started again.
There is the added bonus that there is The Bakery cafe right next door so you can have your coffee afterwards.
On Your Bike in Taunton is another great place to hire bikes from.
There is such a variety of places to cycle around Taunton.
The Levels are lovely if you want to avoid the hills.
For something hillier then we have the Quantocks, The Blackdown Hills or even Exmoor.
And in every direction, there are many bike-friendly cafes - I feel I should be able to write a guide to them.
If you want any advice on getting started with cycling, or routes or cafes then get in touch with me.
Summer is a perfect time to get back on your bike.
Do it on your own or with friends, but get out there, have fun, explore and perhaps treat yourself to a coffee at the end.

Marseille place Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe on transfer list due to ‘unacceptable behaviour'
Marseille say they have transfer listed winger Jonathan Rowe and midfielder Adrien Rabiot as a result of what they describe as 'unacceptable behaviour' from both players following their opening game of the Ligue 1 season. Roberto de Zerbi's side were beaten 1-0 by Rennes on Friday following an added-time winner from Ludovic Blas. Rennes had played the majority of the game with 10 players after defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal was sent off in the 31st minute. Advertisement According to a statement released by the club on Tuesday, Marseille have decided to sell Rowe and Rabiot, who both started the match, based on their reaction to the defeat in the changing room after full-time, with the players being informed of the situation earlier this week. 'Olympique de Marseille announces that Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe have been placed on the transfer list by the club,' the statement said. 'This decision was taken due to unacceptable behaviour in the dressing room after the match against Stade Rennais FC, in agreement with the technical staff and in accordance with the club's internal code of conduct. 'The decision was communicated to the two players by the club on Monday.' Both players have only been at Marseille for one season. Rowe joined in August last year from Championship side Norwich City on a season-long loan deal that contained an obligation to buy. The 22-year-old made 30 appearances in his first season in southern France, scoring four goals and providing four assists, but only started six matches. This summer, Rowe was vital in England's successful defence of their European Under-21 Championship title, scoring the winner in a 3-2 extra-time victory over Germany in the final. Rabiot, 30, joined Marseille as a free agent in September after five years with Italian side Juventus. The France international was regular under De Zerbi in the 2024-25 season, starting 29 out of 31 games in all competitions and recording 10 goals and five assists. He is a five-time Ligue 1 champion, winning the title in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 with Marseille's rivals Paris Saint-Germain before joining Juventus. Marseille finished second in the league last campaign, 19 points behind PSG, and qualified for this season's Champions League. De Zerbi's team have been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in CJ Egan-Riley and Angel Gomes on free transfers and signing Facundo Medina, Timothy Weah and Igor Paixao. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also rejoined the club after a season with Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah. (Top photo of Rabiot: Pablo Rodriguez/Quality) Spot the pattern. Nottingham Forest agree deal to sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus
Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal to sign Douglas Luiz from Juventus. The move will see the 27-year-old Brazil international move on loan with an obligation to buy based on the number of games he plays for the Premier League club. Forest also hold the option to make the transfer permanent for a fee in the region of €30million in case he doesn't appear in the required amount of matches. Advertisement The East Midlands club have been extremely active in the market over recent days with deals secured for Omari Hutchinson, James McAtee and Arnaud Kalimuendo. That business followed the club-record move for Dan Ndoye from Bologna earlier in the window while the pursuit of Rico Lewis from Manchester City is continuing. Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus have also arrived from Botafogo, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn was signed on a free transfer. Luiz joined Juventus last summer from Aston Villa on a five-year deal worth €50million (£42.3m; $53.6m, plus add-ons) as Villa sought to avoid breaching Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSR). The Brazil international has made 27 appearances since of which just six were starts, and only three in the league. Manchester City were interested in signing Luiz on loan in January, as reported by The Athletic at the time, but Juventus' preference was either to offload the midfielder with a sale or a loan with an obligation to buy and a deal never materialised. Arsenal fans: After Havertz injury, who should be signed in closing days of window?
Arsenal have brought in six new signings this summer, but with David Ornstein reporting Kai Havertz is set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury, what should they be doing in the final days of the transfer window? Viktor Gyokeres, signed from Sporting CP this summer, started in the victory over Manchester United on the opening day of the Premier League season, but with Havertz out, he will be the only recognised central striker available to Mikel Arteta. The club have been looking for an option to play on the left of their front three, but should they now concentrate on a No 9? Or look for a versatile option? As reported today, the club are actively exploring the transfer market to potentially reinforce their attack and cover the absence of Havertz. With the transfer window closing on September 1, who do you think sporting director Andrea Berta should be looking to bring in? The Athletic Staff Aug. 20, 2025 7:45 am EDT
