I drove 242-miles to UK seaside town in an electric car and it was hell

Keir Starmer wants electric vehicles to dominate the UK's motoring industry by 2030 - but much work must be done before this is achievable as my latest experience found
After a year of owning an electric car, I'd like to think I am getting used to charging up publicly. But one recent incident showed just how unequipped Britain is for a dynamic petrol-to-electric switch by 2030.
Just last week I was returning from a UK seaside break in Minehead, Somerset, back to my hometown of Folkestone in Kent. The journey itself, according to Google Maps, would span 242-miles and take about 4.5 hours without traffic and stop-offs. My 20-plate Mercedes EQC can do 235-miles without needing a charge, so we anticipated a quick top-up at a service station on the way home.

Electric cars themselves are clever little machines, they tell you well in advance when you're expected to run out of miles and direct you to the nearest charging points, of which there are several across the country's motorway network. Most car brands also allow you to download an app to tell you when the car is charged enough to complete your pre-planned journey. And having had a great experience on our way to Minehead, we expected no such hiccups on the trek back home.

On our inbound journey, we stopped off at Amesbury Service Station, a modern complex with many drive-thru options for lunch and chargers that propelled the car by 120 miles in under 30 minutes. It cost around £30 for the privilege, which is something many EV drivers expect when paying for convenience fast charging.
The GridServe charge points were excellent - so when I saw another service station fast charging infrastructure on a slightly different route home, I thought we'd only be stopping for 15 or so minutes before getting on our way. Oh how wrong I was.
Our first stop was at Leigh Delamere Service Station on the M4, where nearly every EV point was taken. But in true British style, there were four or five drivers huddled around the parking spaces debating something ominous when we pulled up.
Turns out these chargers were painfully slow - and would slow down even further when another user plugs in. So after a 30 minute wait, and less than 40 miles gained, we decided to move onto another service point in the hunt for a fast charge.
Much time wasted
We were told to head to Chieveley services, a further 57-miles down the road, where we were assured fast chargers were operating. But when we arrived we saw a car park attendant looking rather stressed and many EV users standing around once more. It turns out on this occasion several of the chargers had malfunctioned - with some not taking card payments, while others failed to recognise cars were even plugged in. It was hard to see if any of them were actually working.

With a number to call, and one remaining space left, we dialled to see if the charger could be reset and ended up being a spokesman for Chieveley's EV community. We didn't have enough miles to get home, and it would be make-or-break as to whether we could get to the next nearest charge point. So with options limited, we decided to stay put and hope for the best.
As we waited, so many EVs were circling the car park with some driving off when they could see many others struggling. Cars in desperate need of a top-up were forced to park up in a standard parking bay and wait.
As we sat on the curb and waited for our pump to reset, a mum and son who were returning to the West Country from Heathrow Airport were dismayed to find their EV point was also not working. With only 15 miles left, they also had no choice but to wait for a resolution. After a long, problem-free flight from LA back to the UK, their only travel problem encountered was with the electric car.

After nearly an hour, our charger finally recognised the car and it looked as though we were finally charging up. Despite being relieved, we had wasted something of 1.5 hours trying to charge up, adding to an already long journey home with a four-year-old child who suffers with travel sickness.
Did it need to be such a painful experience? In short, the answer is no. Chargers are at nearly every motorway service station now, but it's never clear whether you're going to get a slow or fast charge until you arrive. This is unless you do long miles in an EV every day, and become familiar with chargers to avoid and ones to beeline when you need to be somewhere.

And like many forms of technology, things often go down, break or malfunction. Will there be a quicker back-up reboot at such public service stations when people are clearly reliant on them?
Keir Starmer announced last month that by 2030, car manufacturers will be stopped from selling new petrol and diesel cars with the exception of hybrids which can still be sold until 2035. According to the Government, EV demand is rising with sales up 40% in March from last year. And I can quite believe it.
But infrastructure has to improve 10-fold, with fast chargers accessible everywhere. And for people living in residential areas without driveways or off-street parking, more needs to be done to ensure they have the right equipment. As for people doing long journeys in an EV, I can only hope this incident was a one-off.

British designer Paul Smith has expanded his brand's existing Fashion Residency programme to students in the US. In partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), for the initiative's second edition the Paul Smith Foundation will be selecting one American designer to join the residency at Studio Smithfield in London. The inaugural US participant, who will be part of the Paul Smith's Foundation x CFDA Designer-in-Residence, will join six UK-based designers in receiving a 400 square foot studio space for 12 months, supported by Projekt. Each designer will also receive mentoring from industry leaders, business-planning training, a visa, flights and living expenses. Applications for the second cohort of the programme have now been opened, with shortlisted candidates associated with the CFDA-led arm to begin interviews in September 2025. Designer Paul Smith will oversee the selection process alongside CFDA president, Steven Kolb, and vice president of program strategies/education and sustainability initiatives at CFDA, Sara Kozlowski. Launched in 2024, Paul Smith founded the Fashion Residency at Studio Smithfield programme alongside the Mayor of London and Projekt. Through it, select young designers are given access to set workspace and a training programme, the latter designed by the Paul Smith's Foundation, which matches participants with industry professionals. In a statement, Kolb said: 'Fashion is truly a global business, and an opportunity such as this will provide one American talent with invaluable experience and exposure in an international market. The chance to work alongside peers in the UK fosters creative exchange, builds cross-cultural understanding, and strengthens our industry as a whole. We are deeply grateful to Sir Paul Smith for his continued collaboration and dedication to nurturing the next generation of talent.'

To mark the launch of the Ford Explorer, Lexie Alford became the first person to circumnavigate the globe in an EV. The 18,600-mile, 27-country journey traversed territory as diverse as the Australian outback, the mountains of Bhutan and the Atacama desert. Impressive stuff, but of more relevance to me – and you, I would expect – is how the Explorer will tackle slightly more real-world adventures, such as the traffic-clogged streets of Twickenham, the bumpy moorland roads of Somerset and the relentless roundabouts of Milton Keynes. Now, I doubt I'll get close to Alford's epic quest in terms of accumulated mileage over the coming months, but I will be tackling those more real-world environments – and with enough time behind the wheel hopefully to gain an understanding of what remains a very curious machine. A controversial one, too. This is, as you may recall, the Ford that isn't entirely a Ford: it's built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB electric car platform, as part of a broad deal between the two firms that has helped the Blue Oval expand its EV line-up beyond the larger Mustang Mach-E. That said, Ford says that while it has taken a VW Group platform, it has developed its own vehicle with its own character. It's also the Explorer that isn't really an Explorer: the name comes from a long-running US market SUV, although one that is both larger and very much not electrically powered. To British buyers not versed in Ford's US lineup, that's possibly more confusing than controversial: certainly Ford attracted less opprobrium for using the name than if they had, say, wheeled out an electric SUV-coupé and called it a Capri. Imagine!

A total of 439,180 applicants have gained a place at university or college – up 3.1% on the same point last year, according to data published by the university admissions service. Ucas said it is the highest number of placed students on results day on record. Overall, 82% of UK 18-year-old applicants awaiting a decision on results day secured their first choice – which was the same proportion as last year. For 18-year-olds in the UK, 255,130 applicants have been accepted onto a university or college course – up 4.7% on last year, which is a record high. The number of international students who have been accepted on to undergraduate courses has risen by 2.9% – from 51,170 last year to 52,640. Accepted applicants from China (12,380) are up 13% compared with last year. The figures come as universities have been warning of financial pressures because of uncertainty about the recruitment of overseas students as well as years of frozen tuition fees for domestic students. University leaders have suggested the Government's plans for immigration could deter international students from coming to the UK and exacerbate the financial challenges faced by British universities. Under the immigration white paper proposals, graduate visas will be reduced to 18 months and a new levy on income that universities generate from international students could be introduced. Education minister Baroness Jacqui Smith of Malvern said the complete picture on international student demand will not be known 'for some time' as many are postgraduates who do not apply through Ucas. She told the PA news agency: 'We've been clear, whether or not it's whilst thinking about the immigration white paper, or the welcome we provide to students, that we will always continue to welcome the very brightest and best to come to this country to study in our universities. 'Whilst we're pleased for students to take advantage of world-leading higher education institutions, we're not prepared for them to take advantage of our immigration system.' When asked whether she believes a university could go bust this academic year because of financial pressures, Baroness Smith told PA: 'I think we're taking the action necessary to safeguard our higher education institutions.' She said: 'Were we to face a situation where a university got into trouble, our top priority would be how we protect students and it's sensible to plan for that. 'That doesn't mean that I think that that is imminently going to happen.' Speaking on A-level results day, the education minister added: 'We've always been clear that the priority in the case of any university, for whatever reason, closing down would be the ongoing support of the students.' Baroness Smith said she expected universities to have 'plans to protect students' in the event of any course closures and for the Office for Students (OfS) to 'keep a close eye' on it. Ucas data also showed regional disparities remain in university access, with the gap between north-east England and London the highest on record. Overall, 24.9% of 18-year-olds from north-east England secured a university place on results day, compared with 43.4% of 18-year-olds from London. The gap is now 18.5 percentage points, up from 17.3 percentage points last year and 11.9 percentage points in 2019. Jo Saxton, chief executive of Ucas, told PA: 'The North East is the only region in England that has seen a decrease in participation today. 'That is just incredibly stark.' The Ucas figures released on Thursday also show that the subjects with the largest percentage increases in placed students this year are engineering and technology, mathematical sciences and law. Dr Saxton said: 'I think Ucas applicants have always been savvy and think about what is going to give them the best outcomes.' She added: 'This year's students were just thirteen when the pandemic hit, and their secondary schooling was turned upside down. 'It's great to see these applicants securing a university place in record numbers, seeking more education and investing in their futures. 'I am equally delighted to see how universities across the country have responded to their ambition. 'For any student who didn't quite get the grades they were hoping for, or even those still yet to apply, there are plenty of options in clearing with around 27,000 available courses. 'Ucas experts are also available on the phones, on social media and on the Ucas website, to help all those deciding on the next step that's right for them.'
