Premier League set to introduce rule allowing only captains to speak to referees
The rule was introduced by UEFA for the 2024 European Championship and has been utilised in UEFA competitions this season.
Introducing the initiative ahead of Euro 2024, it was hoped it would breed 'trust' between players and officials and prevent referees from being 'mobbed'.

Captains were requested to ensure their team-mates did not encroach upon the referee to allow direct conversations to take place between the captain and official.
Explaining the rule before last summer's Euros, UEFA managing director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti said: 'Explaining a decision with up to 22 players mobbing you is impossible for a referee. It can lead to a breakdown in communication, with the beautiful game turning very ugly very quickly, which, everyone agrees, is bad for the image of football.'
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the game's law makers, agreed to conclude trials of the rule in March. It will be included in the 2025-26 laws of the game as a new guideline 'for any competitions wishing to apply the principle of only the captain approaching the referee in specific situations'.
Premier League referee Michael Oliver spoke positively about the rule ahead of Euro 2024. 'It will definitely help,' he said. 'A lot of the situations you see now are players and fans wanting answers and clarification. Having that link and that dialogue with a designated person can only help provide that.'
PGMOL has introduced a number of new initiatives and technologies in recent seasons. Semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) was officially implemented in April after extensive trials, while in-stadium video assistant referee (VAR) announcements have been trialed in the Carabao Cup.
'Match Officials Mic'd Up', the television show which has released Premier League referee audio publicly for the first time, was also launched in a bid to improve transparency.

Luis Diaz arrives in Munich ahead of Bayern transfer
Luis Diaz (29) has arrived in Munich ahead of his proposed move from Liverpool to Bayern Munich. The Colombian attacker was spotted by Sky Germany journalist Kerry Hau, who added that despite a near 14-hour journey from Tokyo, Diaz will undergo his medical and contract signing with the Rekordmeister later today. This comes after Bayern Munich reached an agreement with Liverpool to sign Diaz for a reported €75m (£65.5m). After signing a four-year contract, the 29-year-old will earn an annual salary of €14m. Bayern Munich went into the transfer window with signing a left-sided attacker a priority and after missing out on several targets such as Bradley Barcola, Cody Gakpo and Rafael Leao, settled on Liverpool's Diaz who played 148 games across all competitions under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, scoring 41 goals and providing 23 assists following his €49m transfer from Porto in January 2022. Barcelona teenage sensation has asked to leave this summer
According to Mundo Deportivo, it has come to light that young forward Jan Virgili has informed Barcelona of his desire to leave the club. The 19-year-old believes that continuing in the fourth tier with Barça Atletic does not align with his personal ambitions. This decision has reportedly surprised the club, who still see Virgili as an important part of their B team project. Despite this unexpected request, Barcelona will not stand in his way, provided that an interested club meets their financial demands. The Catalan giants are asking for a €4 million transfer fee along with a 50% sell-on clause for any future move. Mallorca have already shown interest in the player and are monitoring the situation closely. Player seeks more competitive football Virgili's stance is clear that he no longer feels challenged by playing in Spain's fourth division and wants to take a step up in his career. Jan Virgili wants to leave Barcelona. (Photo by) From his point of view, staying with Barça Atlètic doesn't reflect his potential or help his progression. On the other hand, Barcelona believe that he is still in a developmental stage and would benefit from regular game time in the reserves. They see the B team as a direct pathway to the first team. Barça have stressed that, while they are disappointed with Virgili's decision, they will remain firm. The message to him and any other youngster considering a similar move is to bring a suitable offer, or continue developing within the structure. So far, no other young player has voiced such dissatisfaction with the club's development path. Barça continue to believe in their academy and the value of Barça Atletic, despite their relegation. The club is committed to giving its best talents a chance, but only within a framework that benefits both the player and the institution.
