Bokaro: Panic gripped Tulbul village, a hamlet surrounded by a dense forest at the foothills of Luggu hills, under Gomia block on Saturday after a farmer claimed to have spotted a tiger roaming in his field.
The farmer, identified as Manoj Prajapati, recorded a video of the animal on his mobile phone, which soon went viral on social media.
Forest officials said though the pug marks did not resemble that of a tiger at first sight, they have urged residents to remain watchful.
"The team which visited the spot found pug marks of an animal, but they were smaller in size and did not appear to be of a tiger or a leopard. The animal could possibly be a hyena or some other wild animal, but not a member of the big cat family.
The location shown in the video has been verified. However, the animal is not clearly visible in the video, making identification difficult. An alert was issued in the surrounding areas," local forest official Sudip Shinde said.
Prajapati however claimed he was working his field when he saw the animal. It was tiger. We work late in our fields. Security is necessary for our safety," he said. Prajapati hid behind a tree and then climbed it to record the video, he said.
Locals said the spot, where the animal was sighted, is close to residential school, several hotels and a govt building and demanded heightened patrolling and stronger security arrangements. Teachers and parents were advised to remain alert and ensure children's safety.

‘Cat Meat Tastes Better Than Human': Kerala Man's Grisly Instagram Story Triggers Probe

Last Updated: A video of Shajeer, a lorry driver from Cherpulassery, killing a cat and sharing it on Instagram has sparked outrage in Kerala. Police are investigating and trying to locate him. A disturbing video of a man killing a cat and sharing the footage on Instagram has triggered outrage in Kerala, prompting a police investigation. The accused has been identified as Shajeer, a lorry driver from Cherpulassery in Palakkad district. The video, posted as an Instagram Story from the account 'Shajeer_Tool', first showed the cat being fed. What followed was far more horrifying as another clip showing the cat's head and body parts separated was uploaded. As the footage circulated on social media, users flagged it to the police. Cherpulassery police have launched a probe and are verifying the authenticity of the video. Preliminary findings suggest Shajeer is currently in Tamil Nadu. The police are trying to trace his exact location. According to Kerala Kaumudi, when questioned informally about the act, Shajeer allegedly said, 'Cat meat tastes better than human meat." Authorities are still trying to establish where the video was filmed. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation. Under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, killing or maiming an animal is a punishable offence. The new law, part of the overhaul that replaced the Indian Penal Code, clearly states that anyone who kills, poisons, or renders an animal useless can face up to five years in jail, a fine, or both. The act may also attract charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which lays down additional penalties for causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals. While extreme cases of consuming pets are rare in India, this is not an isolated incident. In Chennai, residents in July 2025 sounded the alarm over a group of youths from the Narikorava community allegedly trapping and killing residential cats for meat, later selling it to roadside eateries as chicken or mutton biryani, according to a report by the Times Of India. Pet owners across areas like Tiruvottiyur and Ambattur complained of missing cats, calling for urgent police action. view comments First Published: August 04, 2025, 22:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Friendship Day dinner turns tragic as a 21-year-old run over by truck in Thane

A 21-year-old woman who was riding pillion with a friend while returning home was killed after a speeding container truck rammed into their two-wheeler Sunday night in Maharashtra's Thane. Palak Solanki and Pawan Mhaisala, 24, who was driving the two-wheeler, had gone to drop another friend, Zoya, at her Mumbra residence after dinner when the accident took place near Reti Bunder Junction in Mumbra, said the Thane police. According to a police complaint filed by Mhaisala, he and Solanki were returning home on his Suzuki Access 125 scooter around 11.30 pm Sunday. They dropped off a friend, Zoya, at her home in Amrit Nagar in Mumbra. 'He said that since it was Friendship Day on Sunday, they had decided to go out for dinner,' an officer said. Mhaisala stated in his complaint that as they reached Retibandar No 4, a container truck travelling towards Nashik hit their scooter from behind. Mhaisala lost control of the vehicle because of the impact, and both he and Solanki fell onto the road. The rear wheel of the container then ran over Solanki's head, causing her to die on the spot, he added. Mhaisa suffered a fractured ankle and bruises to his waist, left shoulder, and right leg in the crash. Two or three pedestrians who witnessed the accident rushed to help him. Mhaisa then called Zoya, who in turn called Solanki's relatives to the scene. The complainant alleged that the container driver was driving at high speed, disregarded road conditions, and fled the scene without reporting the accident. The police said a case has been registered against the unknown driver and the container truck at the Mumbra Police Station. They added that an investigation is underway to locate the vehicle as well as the individual responsible for the accident.
