Amateur No.1 Woad takes the Irish Open by six shots

The Advertiser06-07-2025
English amateur Lottie Woad has become the first non-professional to win on the Ladies European Tour in three years as she claimed the title at the KPMG Women's Irish Open.
The 21-year-old, who is world No.1 in the amateur rankings, showcased her quality with a six-shot victory at Carton House, finishing on 21 under.
She became the first amateur to win on the women's tour since 2022, when Jana Melichova won the Czech Ladies Open.
Despite Woad's success, she is not tempted to turn professional as she closes in on an LPGA Tour membership.
"No, I'm not tempted to turn pro yet," she said on the Ladies European Tour website. "I'm still trying to get my final two points for the LPGA. I'm trying to get those and then we will see what happens after that."
Woad came into the final round with a seven-shot lead and fired five birdies and one bogey in a four-under-par 69.
Sweden's Madelene Sagstrom finished second on 15 under, one shot ahead of Amelia Garvey of New Zealand. England's Charley Hull was fourth on 12 under.
Four players were two shots further back with Australia's Kirsten Rudgeley, Fatima Fernandez Cano (Spain), Hannah Screen (England) and Chiara Tamburlini (Switzerland) all tied fifth on 10-under.

‘I did that on purpose': Lyon comes clean on tactical sledging ahead of Bazball Ashes bout

Upon hearing that England were talking up tactical sledging during their hot-tempered recent series against India, Nathan Lyon's eyebrows raised with amusement, but also recognition. It's been eight years since Lyon was the author of his own premeditated barrage, an episode that still crops up when England talk of touring Australia. 'Could we end some careers? I hope so,' Lyon had said in a series of pointed remarks to the touring English press that recall a very different time in the battle for the Ashes. For one thing, England held the urn in 2017, after winning comfortably at home in 2015. It was also not so long since they had won a series in Australia, a resounding 3-1 triumph in 2010-11, with a trio of innings victories that heralded enormous introspection down under. And the Australian team assembling in Brisbane that November had already been subjected to plenty of criticism from within, after the selectors surprised many by picking Tim Paine and Cameron Bancroft to start the series. Lyon wished to turn the tables as well as the ball. 'Looking back at that, I did that on purpose,' Lyon told this masthead 100 days out from the first ball of the Ashes, on November 21 in Perth. 'I wanted to make it about England, take a lot of pressure off 'Painey' and Cam Bancroft. Painey was coming back into the side, Cam was making his debut, so there was a lot of pressure on our batting group, especially those young guys. Loading 'I felt like my game was in a really good area, where I could be confident in backing up my skill [with words]. I wanted to take some pressure off them. That's part of the game – I think I did that, all the attention came to me, which is all right. 'I've always had the approach that I'll do whatever it takes for this team, and whatever my role needs, whether it is taking heat, I'm more than happy to do that, or bowling off-breaks or going out and doing nightwatchman.'

FA imposes eight-week ban on ex-Premier League ref

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been sanctioned and given an eight-week ban by the Football Association in relation to comments he made about former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp in a video that went viral last year. Coote had been sacked by English soccer referees' body PGMOL after a video, recorded in July 2020, circulated on social media showing the official allegedly abusing Klopp and after a full investigation, his position was deemed untenable. The 43-year-old was charged by the FA in June and an independent Regulatory Commission has now imposed an eight-week suspension and mandatory face-to-face education program on him. Coote had admitted the charge. "It was alleged that contrary to FA Rule E3.1 the referee acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words about Jurgen Klopp in a video that was recorded around July 2020 and appeared on social media in November 2024," the FA said. "It was also alleged that his actions constitute an 'Aggravated Breach', which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as they included a reference - whether express or implied - to nationality." Europe's soccer governing body also said Coote was banned from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026. Coote has apologised for his actions. The Sun also published a video which the newspaper said showed Coote appearing to snort white powder during his time working as a match official at Euro 2024.
