But no one could have envisioned this version of Max Scherzer, especially after he left following three innings in his debut with the Blue Jays way back when Baltimore came to town in the season's series opener.

When Bieber was acquired from Cleveland on trade deadline line, many pegged the right-hander to start in the playoffs.

As of today, and keep in mind things can change in the many weeks to follow, Scherzer must start Game 1 in whatever playoff series the Jays happen to experience, whether it's a best-of-three backdrop or a best-of-five matchup.

The one mistake Scherzer made Thursday was a pitch Michael Busch launched for a homer.

Scherzer earned the win to improve to 4-3, while the Jays' win improved their record to 71-51.

Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt and even Eric Lauer, whose play has turned heads, have had moments on the mound.

But none has the resume of Scherzer or the cache.

Bieber, potentially, can fill that role, but until he's on a big-league mound he must be viewed as an unknown.

At the same time unless something goes sideways, Bieber is expected to start in the playoffs because the Jays brought him in for those moments.

Fully aware of the Cubs' aggressive approach at the plate, Scherzer felt the key was to be aggressive.

He credited battery mate Tyler Heineman.

'It was a good game overall,'' said Scherzer.

The big swing came courtesy of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

'We won with a two-run shot not a solo shot,'' added Scherzer.

Being around the baseball block as long as he has, Scherzer wasn't going to look too far into the future and nor was he going to comment on the possibility of a six-man rotation.
Article content
He was more than willing to talk about the fans who have been flocking to the ballpark.
Article content
'They're special and the fans have been great.'
With Thursday's game so tight, the Jays' bullpen entered the game with no margin for error.

Roughriders to bring pre-season game to Saskatoon

WATCH: For the first time in 35 years, the Saskatchewan Roughriders will play a pre-season game in Saskatoon. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are set to bring a pre-season game to Saskatoon for the first time since 1991. The game will be hosted at Griffiths Stadium on the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) campus in 2026. Roughriders made the announcement on Friday, saying the team will play 10 regular-season home games at Mosaic Stadium in 2026, rather than the usual nine. This change is due to BMO Field hosting 2026 World Cup soccer events, resulting in both Roughriders-versus-Argonauts games being held in Regina. 'Bringing a Saskatchewan Roughriders pre-season game to Saskatoon is a very exciting and unique opportunity for the city,' said Minister Responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan, Alana Ross. 'This is more than a football game — it's a celebration of community pride, provincial unity, and the shared love of the game that brings our province together. We can't wait to cheer loud for Rider Nation in Saskatoon next May.' Tickets for the Saskatoon pre-season game will be sold separately, with purchase and pre-sale details to be announced later. Saskatoon to host Roughriders' next pre-season game Roughrider Season Ticket Members' packages will include 10 regular-season home games, plus a possible playoff game. 'We are absolutely thrilled to bring Rider football to Saskatoon!' said Saskatoon Mayor Cynthia Block. 'Let's pack the stands and show the league what Rider Pride really looks like!' The last Roughriders pre-season game in Saskatoon was in 1991. Block said the city used to host the games more frequently and hopes this becomes a tradition again. 'Having this be an annual [event] would be a beautiful nod to not only our city, but the unbelievable unity we have right across this province,' Block said. She welcomes fans from across the province to attend. 'Saskatoon is going to be more than ready to roll out the red carpet and make sure that our neighbours across this great province are treated to the warm hospitality of this city,' she said. Discover Saskatoon says the game will be a boost for local businesses. 'Visitors come here and fill our hotels. They dine in restaurants, they shop in our stores and experience all that Saskatoon has to offer, and the result is millions in economic activity,' said Terri Nielsen, vice-president of destination management. The Roughriders are no strangers to Griffiths Stadium, having held their annual training camp there for years. The U of S says the connection between the two continues to grow. 'There's a strong connection between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Huskies,' said Cheryl Hamelin, vice-president of university relations at U of S. 'Hosting the game is just one more opportunity to strengthen our deep partnership.' Roughriders say the complete 2026 season schedule, including the dates of the Saskatoon pre-season game and the 10th home regular season game, will be unveiled in the offseason. Springer back from Blue Jays injured list, will lead against Rangers

George Springer is back. The veteran player was reinstated from the seven-day injured list by the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday morning. Springer will lead off Toronto's batting order against the Texas Rangers in this afternoon's matinee at Rogers Centre. The 35-year-old outfielder and designated hitter hasn't played since July 28 after he was concussed by a fastball thrown by Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kade Strowd. Springer homered in the second of his three at-bats in his rehab start for triple-A Buffalo on Friday. Outfielder Joey Loperfido was optioned to the minor-league Bisons in a corresponding move. Springer was in the midst of a resurgent season when he was concussed. He's hitting .291 with 18 home runs, 57 runs batter in and 12 stolen bases so far this season, with a .383 on-base percentage and a .506 slugging percentage. The 26-year-old Loperfido has been excellent for Toronto this season when called up from Buffalo. He's hitting .358 with three home runs, 10 runs batted in, and a stolen base in 30 games. He has a .409 on-base percentage and a .506 slugging percentage in the major leagues this year.
