Mohali: Despite repeated prohibitory orders from the Mohali administration, illegal butcheries continue to operate within a one-kilometre radius of the Air Force Station and Airport in Mohali. This poses a serious threat to aircraft safety due to increased bird activity in the area.
The district administration has long identified unauthorised meat shops, particularly in Jagatpura village, which lies directly along the approach path of landing aircraft. These butcheries slaughter poultry and livestock, openly disposing of meat waste, which attracts scavenger birds such as eagles and kites. These birds significantly increase the risk of bird strikes, potentially causing catastrophic damage to aircraft and compromising both public safety and national security.
While the administration has previously deployed nodal officers to monitor and shut down these illegal operations, inconsistent enforcement has allowed these activities to continue unchecked.
In a renewed effort, district magistrate Komal Mittal has once again invoked Section 163 of Chapter 11 of the Indian Civil Defense Code, 2023 (46 of 2023), issuing a fresh prohibitory order banning non-vegetarian food outlets and waste disposal within a 1,000-metre radius of the Air Force Station. The order is in effect from April 11 to June 10.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, DC Mittal said, "We have been imposing the closure of illegal butcheries in the vicinity. This time, we are also proposing to station a meat waste collection wagon that will operate twice a day. Butchers will be directed to store waste in containers and dispose of it only when the wagon arrives. Strict action will be taken against those found dumping waste in the open."
The new strategy aims to offer a practical disposal alternative while reinforcing the ban on illegal operations. Authorities hope this dual approach — regulation and facilitation — will yield better results than previous enforcement efforts.
Mittal reiterated that continued violations not only pose a threat to aircraft and lives but also have the potential to disrupt military operations and create law and order issues. "This is not just a local issue — it's a matter of national interest," she said.
The district administration has appealed to residents and meat shop owners to cooperate fully with the latest directive. Violators will face strict legal action under the provisions of the Indian Civil Defense Code.
As the risk of bird strikes continues to loom, the administration's renewed push underscores the critical need for compliance in ensuring aviation safety in the region.

Amit Shah in Lucknow: Under Yogi govt, goons no longer rule; fir to verdict within 3 years

LUCKNOW: In address to 60,244 newly appointed police constables at the Defence Expo Ground in Vrindavan Yojna area of Lucknow, Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday asserted that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath , Uttar Pradesh has shed its legacy of lawlessness and entered an era of law and order. Speaking at what he termed a 'historic ceremony' for Uttar Pradesh Police, Shah said, 'Goons no longer dictate terms in the state. The rule of law has been established. Shah, flanked by CM Yogi Adityanath, Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, and BJP state president Bhupendra Chaudhary, handed over appointment letters to 15 recruits, while thousands of others received theirs at the venue. The recruits, 60,244 in total, were brought to Lucknow in over 1,300 buses from all corners of the state. The Home Minister highlighted the transparency of the recruitment process.
