Answer to Chandigarh-Mohali traffic woes, IT City-Kurali bypass corridor to open by Aug 15
1 2 3 Mohali: After years of anticipation and a few bumps along the way, the IT City–Kurali bypass corridor is finally nearing completion — and it's set to open on Aug 15. Mohali deputy commissioner Komal Mittal confirmed the update following a review meeting with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This six-lane, access-controlled expressway, part of the Bareilly–Ludhiana Expressway (also known as the Ambala–Kurali Expressway), is poised to transform travel across the region. Stretching 31.23 km, the corridor will offer a signal-free alternative to Mohali's congested Airport Road, easing traffic and improving connectivity from Delhi to Himachal Pradesh, interior Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir. It is also expected to reduce congestion on key urban routes in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Zirakpur. The corridor once completed will be inaugurated by Punjab Chief Minister. "The project is already 80% complete," said DC Mittal. "Though originally planned to open by June 30, some unavoidable delays have pushed the launch to Independence Day. NHAI officials have assured us that the remaining work will be completed on schedule." Estimated to cost around Rs 1,525 crore, the project saw Rs 763 crore earmarked for land acquisition and Rs 762 crore for construction. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sunteck Presents Luxury 2 & 3 BHK in Mira Road Sunteck Sky Park Learn More Undo A significant delay occurred in 2023 when the project was stalled for nearly eight months due to protests by landowners over compensation rates. In 2023, the project was put on hold for nearly eight months as landowners were protesting against the rates being offered for their land. A total of 450 acres was acquired across 28 villages, including 21 in Kharar tehsil and 6 in Mohali tehsil. The project is part of NHAI's Greenfield initiative, launched after scrapping the earlier Kharar–Banur–Tepla road plan in 2019 due to escalating costs. Illegal butcheries near Mohali airport continue operation despite repeated bans
1 2 Mohali: Despite repeated prohibitory orders from the Mohali administration, illegal butcheries continue to operate within a one-kilometre radius of the Air Force Station and Airport in Mohali. This poses a serious threat to aircraft safety due to increased bird activity in the area. The district administration has long identified unauthorised meat shops, particularly in Jagatpura village, which lies directly along the approach path of landing aircraft. These butcheries slaughter poultry and livestock, openly disposing of meat waste, which attracts scavenger birds such as eagles and kites. These birds significantly increase the risk of bird strikes, potentially causing catastrophic damage to aircraft and compromising both public safety and national security. While the administration has previously deployed nodal officers to monitor and shut down these illegal operations, inconsistent enforcement has allowed these activities to continue unchecked. In a renewed effort, district magistrate Komal Mittal has once again invoked Section 163 of Chapter 11 of the Indian Civil Defense Code, 2023 (46 of 2023), issuing a fresh prohibitory order banning non-vegetarian food outlets and waste disposal within a 1,000-metre radius of the Air Force Station. The order is in effect from April 11 to June 10. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Cost Of Amusement Park Equipment From Mexico Might Surprise You Amusement Park Equipment | search ads Click Here Undo Highlighting the urgency of the situation, DC Mittal said, "We have been imposing the closure of illegal butcheries in the vicinity. This time, we are also proposing to station a meat waste collection wagon that will operate twice a day. Butchers will be directed to store waste in containers and dispose of it only when the wagon arrives. Strict action will be taken against those found dumping waste in the open." The new strategy aims to offer a practical disposal alternative while reinforcing the ban on illegal operations. Authorities hope this dual approach — regulation and facilitation — will yield better results than previous enforcement efforts. Mittal reiterated that continued violations not only pose a threat to aircraft and lives but also have the potential to disrupt military operations and create law and order issues. "This is not just a local issue — it's a matter of national interest," she said. The district administration has appealed to residents and meat shop owners to cooperate fully with the latest directive. Violators will face strict legal action under the provisions of the Indian Civil Defense Code. As the risk of bird strikes continues to loom, the administration's renewed push underscores the critical need for compliance in ensuring aviation safety in the region.
