LIGO-India construction to start in Hingoli this year; expected to be complete by 2030

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory – India (LIGO-India) project is all set to enter its construction phase in Maharashtra's Hingoli district in the second half of 2025, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has said. Importantly, the project is expected to be completed as per the original schedule of April 2030.
In April this year, the DAE floated the first major Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) tender towards the commencement of civil infrastructure and vacuum infrastructure-related works at the proposed site located at Aundha village in Hingoli.
'Works related to the road, civil construction, design of the civil construction phase, vacuum chamber infrastructure, etc, need to be carried out at the site. The construction will start as soon as the EPC contract is issued. Given the current timeline of the EPC tender, work will commence in the latter part of 2025,' Sunil Ganju, the Scientific Secretary of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), DAE, told The Indian Express.
India is building the third LIGO detector, thus completing the triad with the two existing US-based observatories. LIGO-India will join the global network of observatories involved in detecting and studying gravitational waves that hold the potential to offer deeper knowledge about our universe and explore its unknown areas.
LIGO-India is a project under the Mega-Science Consortium of DAE and the Department of Science and Technology (DST). DAE will build the observatory in collaboration with the LIGO laboratory of Caltech and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. Indore-based Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) is leading the execution of LIGO-India along with the Directorate of Construction, Services and Estate Management (DCSEM), Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar, and Pune-based Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA).
LIGO is a gravitational wave detector that consists of a central station flanked by two 4-km-long vacuum chamber arms in an 'L' formation. The detector is a large Michelson Interferometer designed with high sensitivity to detect gravitational waves, done by measuring any variation in the arm lengths.
In September 2015, the two LIGO facilities in the US had made the first ever detection of gravitational waves, a century after Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. In 2016, the Indian government gave 'in-principle' approval to build LIGO-India in Maharashtra. Later, in April 2023, the Union government sanctioned Rs 2,600 crore towards the project.
Over the past two years, work on LIGO-India has slowly gathered momentum with the Indian and US teams engaged in finalising the project design.
'The review of the Design Basis Report (DBR) for the civil infrastructure and the preparation of the Science Requirements Document (SRD) for the vacuum system have been completed. In addition, training for the Indian project teams on the various sub-systems of the detector are progressing at the US facilities,' added Ganju, who is also the head of the Institutional Collaboration and Programs Division, DAE.
In November last year, an MoU was signed between DAE and LIGO-Laboratory, Caltech and MIT, towards the execution of LIGO-India.
'This agreement covers sharing of technical knowledge, detector components and training of human resources for the project. It captures the responsibilities of the LIGO-US and LIGO-India in the collaborative project,' noted the senior DAE official.
Since then, the LIGO-India consortium has continued to grow. Some of the newest members to join include CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, and IIT-Bombay, among others.
The site in Aundha, Hingoli is currently under development. Works for establishing basic amenities like roads, laying compound walls and readying the land for construction are underway. The site office of the Directorate of Construction, Services and Estate Management (DCSEM) is also situated here.
Since July 2023, land procurement for building a wider approach road stands completed. Land has been acquired for a road of 12.5-m width and 2.45-km length that connects the Nanded-Akola State Highway with the corner station of the site.
Re-routing a few village roads has been initiated with the local administration. Services for the site office have been secured and are being used for site coordination for the construction phase.
The current timeline of the EPC tender has evolved and is in line with the project's completion date. 'As per the timeline of activities in the EPC tender, the project is expected to be completed on schedule with the completion date being April 2030,' he said.

Renault plans to more than double component sourcing from India to ₹400 million (about ₹4,055 crore) over the next five years, a senior executive said, as the automaker sharpens focus on making the country a key part of its global supply chain . The company currently buys ₹170 million worth of auto parts from India annually. Renault's move to accelerate component sourcing from India tracks the French automaker issuing a profit warning last week amid weaker-than-expected June sales and headwinds in Europe. It also said it would accelerate cost-cutting measures to improve margins in the second half of this calendar year. "Our ambition is to make India a strong sourcing hub, not only to meet global requirements but also to drive greater value for our Indian supplier ecosystem," Venkatram Mamillapalle, MD at Renault India , told ET on Wednesday. Scaling of component exports will help strengthen the company's supplier base and improve its global competitiveness, he said. The senior Renault India executive was speaking on the sidelines of the introduction of the new Triber on Wednesday. The updated model is likely to challenge Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga and Toyota 's Rumion in the compact MPV segment besides compact SUVs. The Triber is the first of four new models Renault will be introducing over the next two years as part of its $600 million investment plan for the Indian market. The company, which has been a fringe player in the local market with less than a 1% share, is looking to reboot its Indian operations with the new model launches. Mamillapalle noted that the company is moving towards faster decision-making and tighter integration under a unified leadership structure, following a shift from the earlier multi-entity model involving Renault, Nissan, and the Alliance. Dismissing speculation about potential collaborations with Indian automakers, he said, "There is no reason I need a partner. We have our own design, engineering, manufacturing and network. Somebody else may need my assistance - we don't need anybody's." Bloomberg reported on July 4 that Renault is in early discussions with the JSW Group for a potential joint venture. "We are fully committed to the Indian market, and we believe the next phase of growth will be driven by scale, efficiency, and a sharper product focus," he said.

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday inaugurated Investopia Global-Andhra Pradesh-2025 here, highlighting the state's emergence as a key destination for investment, backed by a robust pro-industry environment as well as natural endowments, including a 1000-km coastline, fertile land, green cover, water, wind, and solar energy, apart from ports, airports and strategic location. The Chief Minister underscored that the state, already a hub for agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture as well as cash crops, was strong in technology, the digital economy, and human resources. Naidu asserted that Andhra Pradesh would lead in areas such as drones, electronics, and aerospace. "I assure you, not just in one area—name any field—and we will be number one. Drones, electronics, aerospace... all future technologies are our focus now," Naidu said. The summit, focused on strengthening India- the UAE economic ties, saw the exchange of MoUs between the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) and Investopia. The Chief Minister lauded the UAE's visionary leadership, particularly in transforming Dubai into a global hub. He expressed his appreciation of Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri's for his clear and effective guidance. During the inaugural session, Chandrababu Naidu emphasised the strong relations between India and the UAE, noting that nearly 38 per cent of the UAE's population was of Indian origin. "The world is watching India now," he observed, pointing to India's demographic dividend, which is expected to last for at least the next 20 to 25 years. Observing 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the right leader for India at the right time', Chandrababu Naidu highlighted the impressive trade volume between India and the UAE, having reached $100 billion in 2024-25, with Andhra Pradesh contributing $1.5 billion to this figure. The Chief Minister reiterated Andhra Pradesh's ambitious development vision. Besides, the Chief Minister also announced a significant technological leap for the state. "Now, we are focusing on AI and quantum computing. With the collaboration of IBM, TCS, and L&T, we are establishing the country's Quantum Valley in Andhra Pradesh. Quantum computing operations will start in AP by January 1, 2026. If America has Silicon Valley, India will have Quantum Valley in Amaravati." According to the TDP supremo, Google is set to build its largest data centre outside the US in Vizag. Urging investors to partner with Andhra Pradesh, Naidu promised to take their initiatives to a "logical conclusion". "My government is totally online by making 575 services available through WhatsApp governance. By August 15, no citizen will need to go to any government office. All permissions will be given online with no need to go to any office." The Chief Minister outlined an ambitious economic vision for the state: "Our goal is to achieve a GSDP $2.4 trillion economy and a $43,000 per capita income by 2047. We want to build a healthy, wealthy, and happy society, with no poverty in AP." Naidu added that the state aimed to contribute 160 GW to the Centre's target of 500 GW in green energy production by 2030. He also introduced the P4 model, which encourages the top 10 per cent high-net-worth individuals to adopt the bottom 20 per cent of society to reduce inequality. Remarking that building trust would take time, he observed: "The investors are very important for wealth creation; they are our partners in progress. AP has changed gears from Ease of Doing Business to Speed of Doing Business. I'm assuring you time-bound completion of projects with all the required policy and infrastructural support." The Chief Minister highlighted Andhra Pradesh's unique advantages, including its long coastline, ports, airports, strategic location, and rich natural resources. "Today, India is the best destination for investment, and AP has unique advantages of having a long coastline, ports, airports, strategic location, and rich natural resources like fertile land, green cover, water, wind, and solar energy. I welcome all the investors to make AP their investment destination." The Chief Minister concluded by announcing direct flights for Hajj from Amaravati soon and reiterated his commitment to mutual growth and timely project completion. UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Industries, Food Processing TG Bharath, Chief Secretary K Vijayanand, R Mukundan, president-designate, CII, and MD & CEO, Tata Chemicals and Yussuf Ali M.A., Chairman and Managing Director of Lulu International were among those present.
