Two women rescued from flooded road in Bedford
BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) – The Bedford Fire Department assisted with the rescue of two people who became trapped after attempting to drive through a flooded roadway in Bedford on May 13.
Bedford fire officials said just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, crews with Company 1 responded to Rocky Ford Road. At the scene, a vehicle was found stuck in flooded water with two women trapped inside.

Flooding in Campbell County closes Simons Run
Members of Rescue 1's swift water rescue team began rescue operations. The driver and a passenger were placed in Personal Flotation Devices or PFDs and then safely removed from the flooded road, according to Bedford FD.
'Please remember not to drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, Don't drown.' – BFD
No injuries have currently been reported.

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Widely scattered showers and storms will continue this evening before activity winds down past sunset. A few storms may be on the strong to severe side as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 P.M. for central and southside Virginia. Damaging wind gusts are the main threat; however, large hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. A Tornado Watch is also in effect to the northeast that includes Nelson county. Clouds will also clear out a bit into tomorrow morning with overnight low temperatures still warm and humid in the mid 60s. Some patchy fog may be possible overnight as well. Tomorrow, we will be in between two fronts with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies for the day with temperatures remaining warm in the 80s. In the late afternoon to evening hours, it is possible that we may see a few isolated showers or storms, but most of the area will stay dry. Ahead of the next cold front that will pass through, scattered showers and a few storms will be possible Monday night into early Tuesday morning. A Marginal Risk (1/5) for severe weather is outlined over the region in case an isolated storm or two becomes strong to severe. Damaging wind gusts would be the main threat. As the front passes through, any rain or storms will push east with it into Tuesday as we begin to dry out. High pressure will move in for Wednesday and Thursday with mostly sunny skies and dry weather. Temperatures will warm up into the mid-to-upper 80s near 90 degrees by Friday. Pinpoint Weather: Scattered storms tomorrow with an isolated severe threat
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — A few showers or storms may linger across the region into the overnight hours. Conditions will be mild with lows in the mid 60s under mostly cloudy skies. We will likely begin the day tomorrow with mostly cloudy skies and a few showers around. Into the afternoon, temperatures will warm up in the upper 70s to mid 80s under a mix of sun and clouds. With a frontal boundary still over the region, there will be the chance for hit or miss showers and storms in the afternoon to early evening hours. The best coverage for storms will likely be along and east of the blue Ridge. A few storms may be strong to severe as there is a Slight Risk (2/5) outlined over the Piedmont with a Marginal Risk (1/5) elsewhere. The main threat will likely be damaging wind gusts; however, hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The area with the best chance for severe storms will be from Central Virginia to Southside. As another front swings through, a few showers and storms will be possible late in the day Monday into the night where an isolated storm or two may be strong to severe with damaging wind gusts. A Marginal Risk (1/5) for severe weather is outlined over the region. Isolated storms remain possible on Tuesday before drier air moves in Wednesday into Thursday where weather conditions will just be warm with sun and clouds. New driving campaign aimed at distracted driving in the Star City
ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – A new campaign in the Star City aims to address distracted driving, titled 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving.' Distracted driving has increased throughout Roanoke, Officials say over the last 5 years, they've seen a 60% increase in crashes involving a distraction. To combat this, the city along with the Department of Motor Vehicles has launched the 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving' summer campaign. The campaign is working to decrease distracted driving, by increasing awareness of the risks and consequences, the laws behind it, and giving practical ways to avoid distracted driving. Posters discouraging distracted driving are being put up in parking lots and businesses. All in the hopes of creating a safer Roanoke, and to help save lives. Virginia promoting teen driving safety with 'Arrive Alive' program 'The goal of the campaign is to reduce distraction involved crashes. The message that we chose was 'focused driving safe arriving,'. So instead of kind of like wrist slapping, like don't distracted drive. We wanted to encourage people to do the right thing, which is basically when you get behind the wheel of a car to have a singular focus so your hands are on the wheel, you're looking out the windshield and your mind is on the task at hand, which is driving,' said Rob Issem, Complete Streets & Vision Zero Coordinator with the City. The city says there are multiple different ways those at home can participate in the campaign. You can take the focused driving pledge online, become a campaign ambassador by placing the special yard signs in your parking lots. or if you're an artist, you can create a piece of art connected with the slogan 'Focused Driving, Safe Arriving,' and 10 lucky people will get to see their art on a signal box in downtown.
