Air India plane crash: IMA seeks ₹1 crore each for doctors, people killed around hostel, writes to Tata Group
The Indian Medical Association on Saturday wrote a letter to Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran and requested him to award compensation of ₹ 1 crore each to the doctors and people who lost their lives around the hostel in the horrific Air India plane crash on Thursday.
Apart from this, the IMA president Dr Anil Kumar J Nayak also sought Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran to announce a package after conducting a survey for any student or resident who suffered injuries.
Speaking with ANI, Dr Nayak said, '..We have written a letter to Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran, saying that you had announced a compensation of ₹ 1 crore each for all the passengers. So we requested him to give ₹ 1 crore each to the doctors and people around the hostel who lost their lives. Secondly, if any student or resident is injured or disabled, a package should be announced for them also after conducting a survey...'
Following the Air India flight AI717 – from Ahmedabad to London's Gatwick – crashed, on June 12 afternoon near Ahmedabad airport, moments after taking off for London, Tata Group took to social media to post the update about the compensation to families.
The post reads, 'We are deeply anguished by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured.'
'Tata Group will provide ₹ 1 crore to the families of each person who has lost their life in this tragedy. We will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and ensure that they receive all necessary care and support. Additionally, we will provide support in the building up of the B J Medical's hostel. We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,' the post continues.
Earlier on Thursday afternoon, Air India flight AI717 crashed soon after the take off. There were 230 passengers and 10 crew members onboard. However, only one survived the crash.
Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, is carrying out the checks on the nation's 787s, Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said in a press briefing on Saturday in New Delhi.
The minister added that the government had set up a special multi-department team to investigate all the non-technical aspects around the crash and has been given three months to report. India's accident investigation bureau is in charge of probing the technical aspects behind the plane crash.
To determine what caused the aircraft to fail in the deadliest aviation accident in more than a decade, the investigators have been surveying the wreckage of Air India flight AI171.

Sarfaraz's mother told TOI, "When the power went off, the machine stopped midway with almost half his blood stuck inside it. I begged the staff to start the generator, but no one helped. My son died soon after." Medical experts TOI spoke to, however, said it is highly unlikely that a large amount of Sarfaraz's blood could have been inside the machine at any given point. A doctor clarified, "During haemodialysis, only a fraction - about 200 to 250 ml - of blood circulates through the machine at any time. However, an abrupt power failure can delay the process and destabilise critically ill patients" The hospital staff blamed Sanjeevani, the private firm running the unit under a public-private partnership since 2020, for repeatedly failing to supply diesel. DM Jasjit Kaur visited the hospital and seized all dialysis-unit records and assured strict action. Kaur said, "There was mismanagement and no cleanliness in the unit. BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay hospitalised after feeling uneasy, condition stable
BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge, was hospitalized in New Delhi on Saturday after reporting uneasiness. AFT calls MoD reasoning in denying disability pension in hypertension case ‘cryptic and inconvincing'
Chandigarh: The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) questioned the justification given by the ministry of defence (MoD) for denying disability pension to a former Indian Air Force officer diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes, by dismissing it as a mere "lifestyle disease." The tribunal described the reasoning as "cryptic and unconvincing." In this case, the MoD denied disability pension on the grounds that the officer's condition was the result of personal lifestyle choices rather than military service. A disability pension offers a slightly higher payout than the standard pension. The division bench, comprising Justice Anil Kumar, judicial member, and Vice Admiral Atul Kumar Jain, administrative member of the Lucknow bench of the AFT, passed these orders while hearing an application filed by Wing Commander Anik K Nair (Retd). The applicant initially joined as a soldier in 1986 but later commissioned in the IAF on Dec 18, 1999, and retired on April 30, 2020, in low medical category on attaining the age of superannuation. So, were his appeals. In his plea before AFT, the applicant submitted that the diseases were contracted during service, hence they are attributable to and aggravated by Air Force service. The military authorities, however, submitted that dietary indiscretion, lack of exercise, and a sedentary lifestyle are responsible for the development of such diseases. Considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the AFT bench held that the reasoning of the RMB for denying the disability element of the disability pension to the applicant is "cryptic, not convincing and doesn't reflect the complete truth on the matter". "The impugned orders, rejecting the applicant's claim for the grant of the disability element of disability pension, are set aside. The disease of hypertension and diabetes of the applicant is held as aggravated by Air Force service. The applicant is entitled to get disability at the rate of 50% for life from the next date of his retirement," the AFT held in its recently released order.
