Merlin Cinemas Confirmed as New Operator for Rhyl Cinema
The Cornwall-based independent operator has 21 other cinemas across the UK, including the Scala at Prestatyn.
Denbighshire County Council said the company had a reputation for operating historic cinemas, as well as repurposed and modern buildings as cinemas, in communities often overlooked or underserved by larger cinema companies.
Earlier this year, Merlin's founder and managing director, Geoff Greaves, was awarded an MBE for his outstanding contribution to the cinema industry – recognition of his 35 years spent championing the big screen in small towns.
Following the closure of the cinema at the end of January, Denbighshire County Council has been working to attract an operator to the popular amenity on Rhyl's promenade. The announcement is subject to Merlin completing lease arrangements with Denbighshire County Council.
Councillor Jason McLellan, Leader of Denbighshire County Council and Lead Member for Economic Growth & Tackling Deprivation, said:
'We're delighted to have Merlin on board to ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy a great day out in Rhyl. Once the lease is signed and Merlin have taken over, the cinema will play a pivotal role in the broader regeneration efforts in Rhyl town centre.'
The council added that Merlin is working closely with the council to complete and sign the lease and with suppliers to assess the work needed behind the scenes before it can reopen. The firm is committed to improving the cinema, the council said, and enhancing the cinema experience for the local community. This may mean that the cinema reopens in phases.
There will also be a new name, still to be announced.
Geoff Greaves said:
'We're delighted to have been successful in our bid to operate this cinema. We're already familiar with the location because of our cinema four miles along the coast in Prestatyn, but when the opportunity came along, we jumped at the chance. We are doing everything we can to get the doors open so that the town has a cinema again. We really believe that seeing a film at the cinema on the big screen with family or friends is a very different experience to watching it at home; it is more memorable, more sociable and offers a sense of occasion.'
Councillor McLellan said:
'The cinema itself is in a great location opposite Queen's Market Food Hall and event space, which will open on July 10, therefore this is a great opportunity to be part of an exciting time for Rhyl. As a council we're delighted to have found an operator to take over the site so quickly and we're looking forward to working with Merlin to secure the success of the facility.
'When it opens, I urge residents to support the cinema as well as other leisure facilities in the town – we need everyone to be backing our businesses to ensure their continued success.'

Team principal and chief executive Christian Horner was removed from both those roles last month and has now had his departure from Red Bull Racing and its related companies officially confirmed Red Bull has severed its final ties to ousted former Formula 1 team principal Christian Horner. It marks the official confirmation of the 51-year-old's departure from the racing team and its related companies after he was removed as team principal and chief executive last month. Horner was a named director across three companies set up in the UK. He was chief executive not only of the F1 racing team, but also of Red Bull Technologies Ltd, and of Red Bull Powertrains – the latter set up when the team decided to build its own engines for the first time ahead of the 2026 season. But Horner's exit means he will not be the man in charge of the outfit when it first goes racing with those new power units next year. He was relieved of all his responsibility following the British Grand Prix in July, pending the negotiation of his full departure. And it seems that the terms of his exit have now ben agreed. Companies House filings, received on Thursday, show that Horner has been terminated as a director of all three companies concerned with the operations of the F1 team. The filings also show the appointment of a new director in his place, namely Stefan Salzer who is global head of human resources at the racing team's Austria-based parent company, Red Bull GmbH. The only other director of Red Bull Racing now is Helmut Marko, who serves as an adviser to the main Red Bull company regarding its efforts in F1. Oliver Mintzlaff, as chief executive of Red Bull's corporate projects and new investments, is the de-facto chief of the company's motorsport teams. His only public comments to date have been made on social media platform Instagram, including the lengthy statement he issued in the aftermath of his dismissal. Every one of you, the amazing people at the factory, have been the heart and soul of everything that we have achieved. Irish IT firm with Belfast base lands NI public sector deal worth up to £150m
Version 1, which employs around 500 staff in Belfast, has won a contract with the Department of Finance for its Integr8 Programme. The deal will include the implementation of an Oracle finance and HR cloud platform, along with an IT service management platform, and managed services. The contract is for an initial five years, but the option for a further five years. The potential value of the contract ranges from £63m to £150m. 'This range reflects the potential scale of the contract and takes into account changes and potential modifications to the contract that may be required,' it says. Iceland boss offers reward to anyone who spots a shoplifter in their stores

More info The chief executive supermarket chain Iceland has said the firm will reward customers who help catch shoplifters in their outlets nationwide. Richard Walker told Channel 5 News that with the Deeside-based business suffering substantial losses from theft, the grocery chain will offer £1 to any shopper who spots stealing in their premises. The chief executive explained that shoplifting has become a major issue for the firm, costing them "over £20 million a year". The British grocery retailer runs more than 970 outlets across the UK, including 66 locations in Wales. To receive the £1 reward, shoppers must be members of the supermarket's loyalty programme and possess an Iceland Bonus Card, reports Wales Online. Walker informed Channel 5 News: "I'd like to announce that we will give £1 to any customer who points out a shoplifter. (Image: Channel 5) "We'll put it on their bonus card if they see any customer in our stores who are undertaking that offence." The Iceland chief executive also stated that theft "keeps prices from being lowered" as it costs the company millions of pounds each year. This follows the supermarket's introduction of facial recognition technology at its checkouts in June this year, as part of measures to tackle theft and protect staff from violence. The system involves cameras scanning the faces of customers and cross-referencing them with a database of known troublemakers, subsequently alerting store employees if there's a match. If the trials are successful, Iceland may consider rolling out this technology across all its stores.
