'Masterstroke in bad policy making': Priyank Kharge tears into Centre over Online Gaming Bill

Synopsis As India prepares to introduce a bill prohibiting online money gaming, Congress leader Priyank Kharge criticizes the move as a knee-jerk reaction. He warns of potential revenue loss, job threats, and a decline in foreign investment. Kharge advocates for regulation instead of a ban, citing risks to national security and the growth of unregulated offshore platforms. ANI Priyank Kharge As the Centre is slated to introduce a bill in the Lok Sabha to prohibit online money gaming today, Congress leader Priyank Kharge termed it as yet another "knee-jerk" move, warning that the move could result in significant loss of tax revenue and threaten thousands of jobs. In a post on X, Kharge said that the bill could risk billions in foreign investment, while driving users to unregulated offshore platforms rife with money laundering and security threats. "Knee jerk blanket ban on Online Real Money Gaming without consulting stakeholders or states is another masterstroke by Modi Sarkar in bad policy making. Here's why: Revenue hit: India earns ₹20,000 Cr annually from GST & income tax via online RMG. The ban means states lose this a revenue stream. Jobs & Startups at risk: 2,000+ gaming startups | 2 lakh+ jobs in IT, AI, design. A ban kills India's gaming talent pool & pushes entrepreneurs abroad. Investments dry up: ₹23,000 Cr FDI in last 5 years. Global investors will pull back if India shuts its own digital industry," he wrote. — PriyankKharge (@PriyankKharge) Kharge argued that regulation, not prohibition, is the real solution, but accused the government of rushing into policy mistakes without consulting stakeholders. "Ecosystem collapse: ₹7,000 Cr spent annually on ads, data centres, sponsorships, cyber security will all be gone overnight. Unintended consequences: Bans don't stop addiction or suicides Instead, they push users to unregulated offshore platforms worth ₹8.2 lakh Cr annually where Government has no control at all. Security risks: Unregulated sites ensures money laundering, terror financing, data theft. Even FATF & Rashtriya Raksha University warn against such risks. Legal mess: The Supreme Court is still deciding whether Centre or States have the power," he said. The Karnataka Minister argued that a blanket ban will give rise to Illegal markets that might threaten national security. "Why the rush to ban now? The solution isn't prohibition. Probable way forward: - Regulating skill-based platforms - Enforcing IT Rules, 2021 - Whitelisting legitimate operators A well balanced regulation will ensure: - Jobs + Revenue - Safer users - National security - Global innovation A blanket ban will not only lead to revenue loss, but will give rise to Illegal markets that might threaten national security and of course, there will be a huge innovation setback. Regulation is the way forward," he said.A bill to promote and regulate the online gaming sector, including e-sports, educational games, and social gaming, and to provide for the appointment of an Authority for coordinated policy support, strategic development, and regulatory oversight of the sector, is slated to be introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, is likely to be introduced by Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. It seeks to prohibit the offering, operation, facilitation, advertisement, promotion and participation in online money games through any computer resource, mobile device or the internet, particularly where such activities operate across State borders or from foreign bill seeks to protect individuals, especially youth and vulnerable populations, from the adverse social, economic, psychological and privacy-related impacts of such seeks to ensure responsible use of digital technologies and to maintain public order and protect public health.

Trump imposed tariffs on India to deter Russia's war in Ukraine: Leavitt

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday (local time) said that US President Donald Trump imposed additional 25 per cent tariffs on India to stop Russia from pursuing war in Ukraine. Trump doubled India's tariff rate to 50 per cent for its continuous purchase of Russian energy at a time when the US President has been trying to broker a ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine. Leavitt made these remarks during the press briefing and said, "Look, the president has put tremendous public pressure to bring this war to a close. He's taken actions, as you've seen, sanctions on India and other actions as well. He's made himself very clear that he wants to see this war end, and he has scoffed at the ideas of others that have been raised that we should wait another month before any meeting takes place." Trump meets Ukrainian President, European leaders On Monday, Trump met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and seven European leaders at the White House, discussing ways to put an end to the war in Ukraine. Speaking on Trump's meeting with Zelenskyy, Leavitt said that Trump wishes to bring peace as soon as possible. She further said, "The president wants to move and he wants to bring this war to an end as quickly as possible... With all of those European leaders leaving the White House, including the NATO Secretary General, they all agree that this is a great first step. And it's a good thing that these two leaders are going to be sitting down together, and the president expects that to happen." Leavitt also reiterated the White House's claim that if Trump were president, the war would never have happened. She also highlighted Trump's dedication to ending the war, adding that the US President has spent a lot of time and energy on this effort. Leveraged trade to stop India-Pakistan conflict: Trump Leavitt also reiterated Trump's previous claim of brokering peace between India and Pakistan following the tensions that emerged after Operation Sindoor (a coordinated missile strike at terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir). Speaking during the press briefing, she said that the US President Trump was proud of the peace deals and leveraged trade to end the Indo-Pakistan conflict after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. She said, "[For] India and Pakistan [conflict], he [Trump] used trade in a very powerful way as leverage to bring that conflict to an end. So I know he's very proud of all of these achievements, and I know he's very honoured to serve as the president of the United States and to restore peace around the world." Ever since India and Pakistan agreed to an understanding to stop all firing and military actions in May, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he was able to stop the conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. While India has consistently denied any interference, Pakistan's Army chief Asim Munir thanked Trump for stopping the conflict.

Centre to table Online Gaming Regulation Bill in Lok Sabha today

Reuters Representational image. The Centre is expected to table the The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday to set clear rules for the fast-growing online gaming industry in India. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will introduce the proposal, which seeks to promote and regulate online gaming, including e-sports, educational games and social gaming, while imposing strict curbs on online money games. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Bill on Tuesday, making online betting a punishable offence. According to the draft, the proposed law will establish a dedicated Authority responsible for coordinated policy support, strategic development and regulatory oversight of the online gaming industry. The Bill outlines several objectives: Ban on online money games: prohibiting offering, operation, facilitation, advertisement and promotion of online money games, particularly those operating across state borders or from foreign jurisdictions. Protection of users: safeguarding individuals, especially the youth and vulnerable groups, from social, economic, psychological and privacy-related harms linked to online gaming. Responsible digital usage: ensuring safe adoption of technology while maintaining public order, financial integrity, public health and national security. National-level legal framework: providing a uniform regulatory structure to avoid state-level inconsistencies and address cross-border challenges. The move comes amid growing concerns over rising online gaming addiction, financial frauds, and data privacy risks, particularly among young players. While the Bill intends to encourage the growth of e-sports and educational gaming, it also aims to create clear distinctions between recreational gaming and gambling-like activities. If passed, the law will mark the first centralised, national-level framework to govern India's online gaming ecosystem, balancing industry growth with consumer protection and national security follows a rise in fraud cases in recent months, with investigating agencies also stepping up action against celebrities promoting such applications.
