Pilot breaks altitude record for solar-powered plane, crossing paths with commercial airliner, his team says

Swiss pilot Raphael Domjan beat the altitude record for a solar-powered electric plane in a flight that took him soaring to 9,521 meters, or 31,237 feet, his team announced Wednesday.
The SolarStratos plane made the landmark flight from Sion airport in southwest Switzerland on Tuesday, taking advantage of warm air thermals to go beyond the record that has stood for 15 years.
The certified altitude record for a solar plane stands at 9,235 meters, or 30,298 feet.
The achievement is "one of those unforgettable peaks that define great human and technological adventures," the SolarStratos mission said in a statement.
At cruising altitude, Domjan actually crossed paths with a commercial airliner, SolarStratos said, calling the moment "a powerful symbol of what the decarbonized aviation of tomorrow might look like."
Domjan's flight lasted five hours and nine minutes.
"I share this moment of joy with all the people who have been preparing for this achievement for years," the 53-year-old said.
The data will be sent to the World Air Sports Federation governing body, which will decide whether to validate the new record.
"It is the pressure altitude corrected to standard density altitude that is recognized as the official reference for aviation altitude records," the SolarStratos team said.
Domjan — whose company bio describes him as a "eco-adventurer" and lecturer who pilots planes, gliders and helicopters — is aiming to be the first to take a solar-powered plane above 10,000 meters, flying at the same altitude as airliners. If that barrier is broken, the team hopes to go on and make a first manned solar-powered flight into the stratosphere, which at Switzerland's latitude begins at around 12,000 meters.
"This achievement marks a major milestone on the path toward reaching the stratosphere using only solar power -- and already fulfils the mission's goal: to capture imaginations with emblematic, spectacular challenges that promote solar energy and the protection of our biosphere and planet," SolarStratos said.
The front-mounted single propeller plane, registration HB-SXA, is made of carbon fiber to ensure lightness and strength. SolarStratos is 9.6 meters long, and its huge wingspan of 24.8 meters accommodates the 22 square meters of high-spec solar panels topping the wings, and allows for flying at low speeds.
The plane, which SolarStartos calls "daring and finely engineered," can take off at low speeds, from 50 kilometers per hour upwards. Its maximum speed is 140 kph, while its cruising speed is around 80 kph.
In 2012, the pioneering Domjan became the first person to sail around the world in a fully solar-powered boat, a journey that began in Miami in 2010.
"It's important to demonstrate what we can achieve with solar energy," the adventurer told AFP.
"The dream of flight is probably the oldest dream of mankind," he said.
"My goal is to show to the young generation of today and tomorrow that tomorrow it will still be possible to fly without burning any fossil energies," he said.
"This is what we want to achieve: it's really to show that the world of tomorrow can be better than what we have today," he added.
A warm-up flight on July 31 got to 6,589 meters, surpassing the plane's previous best in 2024.
A first attempt on Friday was quickly abandoned when the forecast thermals failed to materialize, saving the batteries for Sunday when the plane got to 8,224 meters.
During the first phase of record attempts, the aircraft has to make maximum use of rising warm air currents to climb to around 4,000-5,000 meters. It then has to recharge its batteries at this altitude before climbing again.
Before takeoff, the batteries must be fully charged using solar energy, and the plane has to land under its own power — it cannot glide back in on zero charge — and have at least 16% charge in the batteries.
If the flight is to be certified as a record, all the energy used during the flight must have been produced by the solar cells. The current record was set in 2010 by the Solar Impulse experimental plane, with Swiss pilot Andre Borschberg at the controls.

Equipped with an infrared thermometer, Austrian artist Jonas Griessler measures the sweltering heat in an inner courtyard in the centre of Vienna. Thanks to his collective's art work covering the black asphalt with a multitude of bright colours, the ground temperature has dropped from 31C to 20C. Initiated by the museum showing the private collection of late Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten, the project combines creativity, science and urban planning as Europe suffocates under the latest heatwave. "The childish tones reflect the lightness and inconsistency with which our society addresses this issue" of climate change, Griessler, 25, an artist with the Holla Hoop collective, told AFP. With more intense, longer and more frequent heatwaves a direct consequence of climate change according to scientists, European cities are trying to change their urban planning. Many have been opting for more greenery and also lighter paint that reflects solar rays, trying to avoid dark material, which retains heat. "We wanted to slightly improve the quality" of visitors' stays and "promote awareness," said curator Veronique Abpurg, happy that tourists are "attracted by this visually pleasing palette". While each coloured surface represents a year, they each contain small dots. Each dot represents a billion tons of CO2 emissions, and the number of dots on each surface are equivalent to the worldwide emissions of that year. This way one can visualise the increase in emissions due to human activity between 1960 and 2000. "The blocks gradually fill up," lamented the artist, whose background is in graffiti art. "It starts with nine dots, and at the end, there are three times more," he said. "It's a piece of the mosaic for adapting to urban heatwaves," said Hans-Peter Hutter, an environmental health specialist at the Medical University of Vienna, who supports the initiative. A lower temperature on the asphalt means that buildings surrounding the courtyard will need less cooling, reducing air conditioning usage, Hutter said. Researchers Discover More Than 30 Shipwrecks in Lake Constance!

What lies hidden in the dark depths of Lake Constance has so far been largely speculative. Now, modern research technologies are shedding light on the unknown. Using sonar, diving robots, and expert knowledge, the State Office for Monument Preservation is systematically examining the lakebed—and has already identified over two dozen previously unknown wrecks. Some of these not only provide clues about the shipping traffic of past centuries but also open new windows into the lives of earlier societies. Since 2022, the project 'Wrecks and Deep Sea,' overseen by the State Office for Monument Preservation (LAD) in the Stuttgart Regional Council and financially supported by the Ministry of State Development and Housing Baden-Württemberg, has been underway. According to a press release on its website, this is a unique archaeological endeavor of its kind in an inland body of water. 'The project is a unique undertaking in the field of underwater archaeology in inland waters,' said Prof. Dr. Dirk Krausse, state archaeologist at the LAD. The goal is to examine the entire lakebed of Lake Constance for previously unrecognized shipwrecks. This will allow for comprehensive recording, documentation, and monument assessment of wrecks at all depths of the lake. Over 250 Anomalies, 31 Confirmed Wrecks in Lake Constance By the end of 2024, more than 250 suspicious structures—known as anomalies—could be located in Lake Constance, which is up to 251 meters deep. According to the report, 186 of these sites have already been systematically investigated. In 155 cases, they were natural formations such as sediment deposits or vegetation. Man-made objects like fish traps were also among them. 'In 31 cases, they were indeed wrecks—including both culturally significant objects and modern sports boats and watercraft from recent times,' the LAD writes. Individual Spectacular Sites with Surprises A particularly striking discovery was a widely scattered debris field with at least 17 wooden barrels. 'The barrels are partially well-preserved, with some showing lids, bottoms, and potentially barrel marks. Clues to the associated transport ship are still missing, and further investigations are planned,' reports Alexandra Ulisch, a scientific associate on the project. Additionally, two larger metal ship hulls were located and documented by diving robots. According to Ulisch, based on their dimensions and location, they could be the wrecks of the paddle steamers 'SD Baden' (formerly 'Kaiser Wilhelm') and 'SD Friedrichshafen II.' However, a final identification is still pending. Another highlight was the discovery of an almost completely preserved cargo sailing ship at great depth. The mast and yard are still present—a true rarity. 'The find offers unique insights into the sailing technology and shipbuilding of historical Lake Constance ships and represents a significant reference object for research,' said Ulisch. Time Capsules of Past Societies The wrecks in Lake Constance not only provide insights into shipbuilding and transport techniques. Through scientific analyses, information about the origin and quality of the transported goods can also be obtained. These finds contribute to the reconstruction of the economic and social contexts of the respective time. 'Through well-founded, thorough archaeological research, we gain insights into the living conditions of past societies and can make statements about many different aspects of the world at that time,' explains Dr. Julia Goldhammer, the project leader. For Alexandra Ulisch, each wreck is a piece of living history. 'Wrecks are far more than just lost vehicles—they are true time capsules that preserve stories and craftsmanship from long ago. Whether Titanic, HMS Terror, Säntis, or Lady Jay: All examples impressively show that wrecks fascinate people.' By the summer of 2027, all investigations are expected to be completed. Further results are anticipated then—and could further refine the image of Lake Constance as an archaeological treasure.
