Coach Javier Mendez not buying claims that Jon Jones was scared to fight Tom Aspinall

Yahooa day ago
Many have accused Jon Jones of ducking and avoiding a fight with Tom Aspinall – something veteran coach Javier Mendez finds hard to believe.
Jones, arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all time, vacated his UFC heavyweight title and retired from the sport last month. Although shortly after, he claimed he'll fight in July 2026 at a proposed UFC event at the White House – after months of being non-committal to unify the UFC heavyweight title with then-interim champion Tom Aspinall. Many fans were disappointed by Jones and criticized him for holding up the heavyweight division for two years, without fighting the rightful challenger, Aspinall.
Mendez, coach of Islam Makahchev and other notable names, is adamant that the end of this saga was due to circumstance and not that Jones was ducking Aspinall.
"A lot of things are made in between negotiations, and you never know what's real and what's not real," Mendez told MMA Junkie. "One thing I do know in my heart in all the years I've been training fighters: Fighters are not afraid of anyone. So when people say, 'Oh, he doesn't want to fight.' OK, then why are you here then? Fighters are fighters. The circumstances may prevent them from taking a fight because maybe there's not the right amount of money, maybe is not this, but it's not the opponent. The timing, money, something that's involved, but it's never I'm afraid of that fighter. Never. I will refuse to believe that any real fighter will always avoid something. I don't think so. I don't believe that."
Makahchev, Mendez's pupil, will attempt what Jones and other few names have done in moving up in weight to claim a second UFC title. He's expected to take on UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena in his next outing. But unlike many of the two-division UFC champions of the past, Makhachev attempts to win the welterweight title after vacating the belt at 155 pounds. He will not get the chance to simultaneously be a two-division UFC champion.
Mendez does think that Jones' heavyweight reign pushed the UFC to force fighters to vacate their belts before challenging for a second one at a different weight.
"I think they don't want that anymore because it holds up the divisions," Mendez said. It stalls them out. I think a great example was the Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall situation. Can you imagine if Jon Jones held two titles and then two divisions are held up for one reason or another."

Jorge Masvidal will call in 'favor' for UFC White House, pitches Colby Covington rematch

Jorge Masvidal is determined to compete at the UFC's White House event and will do whatever it takes to land a place on the card. Masvidal (35-17 MMA, 12-10 UFC) hasn't competed in MMA since an April 2023 loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287, after which he announced his retirement. He intends to make a comeback in 2026, however, and with fights remaining on his UFC contact, he expects offers to come through. "Gamebred" has his mind and heart set on fighting July 4 at the UFC's proposed fight card at the White House in Washington, and given his history with President Trump, he likes his chances of getting the opportunity. 'Donald Trump was the only Republican to ever win in Miami in the last 30 years, or something crazy like that. Trump said it himself, 'Masvidal is my favourite, he won me Miami, Florida,'" Masvidal told CasinoHawks, who offer the latest online casinos. 'So Trump, that one favour I need, get me on the White House card, brother, let's go. I'll call Trump myself, I got his number on speed dial. I'll call him. I'll call my brother Marco Rubio. I'll call everybody in this town. Get me there. 'I want to fight on that White House card on July 4, it will be the most American thing possible." If Masvidal is granted his wish, then he said any opponent would suffice. However, if things are to be at their most significant, he said rematches with rivals Colby Covington or Kamaru Usman, who are a combined 3-0 against him in the octagon, would be the ideal fits. 'I wouldn't mind fighting Colby," Masvidal said. "I would love to fucking take his head off in front of the White House lawn. I don't think UFC will care to fucking book Colby for anything, but who knows? I would love that fight. 'I have a lot of respect for Kamaru, but I would like to run it back as well. Both times we got to fight were short notice for both of us. I would like a proper camp, 10 or 11 weeks to get ready for that animal and go to war with him on the lawn.'

Din Thomas: 'It's a disaster' if Khamzat Chimaev wins title at UFC 319

UFC analyst Din Thomas about has concerns about Khamzat Chimaev's reliability as champion if he claims middleweight gold from Dricus Du Plessis in the UFC 319 main event. After starting his UFC career by becoming the quickest fighter in modern history to three octagon wins, Chimaev's pace had slowed significantly in recent years, with just five fight since September 2020. His talent has been undeniable, however, and he's now just weeks away from challenging Du Plessis in the Aug. 16 headliner at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). The MMA world is collectively holding its breathe that Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) makes it to fight night without issue. If that happens and he delivers a winning performance against Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC), then Thomas thinks that's where the issues could only begin. "If Khamzat wins it's a disaster," Thomas told MMA Junkie. "You can't tell me a part of you isn't just thinking, 'This fight might not actually happen.' Some of these guys habitual struggle in just making it to the dance. I'm not going to be pessimistic about it and will say he's going to show up. But if he does show up and he's able to win, do we trust him to be able to show up and fight again? That's the thing. "Can he do it twice? Can he do it three times? Because we need movement. I hate when it's static and there's no movement in these divisions and in order to be movement in the divisions, the champions have to fight." Only speculation can be placed on what Chimaev's fighting schedule could look like if he claims UFC gold. However, Thomas ultimately thinks that won't be a reality the promotion will face. His analysis of the 185-pound title bout could evolve as UFC 319 gets closer, but as it currently stands, Thomas is predicting Du Plessis to retain the belt. "I think Dricus wins," Thomas said. "I think he beats him and wears him out earlier, actually, and even before the fifth round. It think he could get a stoppage somewhere in the third. Not just weathering the storm, but matching the pace, being a little more efficient in areas and we just start to see Khamzat slow down a little bit and Dricus take over."
