Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, world's biggest cruise ship
Here's what guests can expect from Royal Caribbean's highly-anticipated new ship, Icon of the Seas.
A jaguar-shaped water slide tower. A lazy river. More than 10 pools totaling the size of four football fields.
Royal Caribbean's upcoming private destination, Perfect Day Mexico, will feature all those and more when it debuts in the fall of 2027. The cruise line revealed new details about the second in its Perfect Day Collection on Wednesday, which will build on the success of Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
Kara Wallace, the company's chief marketing officer, said the new addition began with 'knowing that we wanted to give more of our guests more perfect days, and by creating a Perfect Day in Mexico, we would be able to reach so many more guests given the accessibility from the Gulf Coast and the presence that we've built up out of out of that region, including Galveston.'
'For our guests, it will feel familiar and new,' she told USA TODAY ahead of the announcement.
Where is Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day Mexico?
The destination will be on the country's Caribbean coast in Mahahual. Guests will stop there on Western Caribbean itineraries from Galveston, New Orleans and each of the cruise line's homeports in Florida.
Bookings will open in the fall of 2025.
What can guests expect?
The property's more than 200 acres will be made up of seven distinct neighborhoods. Passengers will arrive at Fiesta Plaza, where they'll be greeted by dancing, live music and drinks like margaritas at the Tipsy Sombrero Bar.
Guests will find a combination lazy and crazy river in the all-ages Splash Cove, where they can relax – and float up to bars, with in-tube cupholders for convenience – or opt for waves and rapids. A 100,000-square-foot pool anchors the area, and families can post up in new Splashaway Cabanas near the line's biggest Splashaway Bay with kid-sized water slides.
Thrill seekers can head to Loco Waterpark, home to more than 30 water slides. Guests can choose from five slide towers, including the 10-slide Jaguar's Peak, which measures over 170 feet high. Wallace said the cruise line leaned into raft slides in particular, which are in highest demand at CocoCay and on its ships 'because families can experience them together.'
Other activities there include hydrolaunch slides that will send riders airborne, a wave pool and more.
The adults-only El Hideaway with an in-pool DJ and 20-person Ultimate Party Cabana; the more private Costa Beach Club; and Chill Beach North and South – where guests will find almost two miles of white-sand shoreline – round out the neighborhoods. The line is billing a number of attractions as firsts, such as the longest lazy river and longest coaster water slide in the world, and the tallest water slide tower in North and South America.
Visitors can also enjoy a dozen dining options with cuisine inspired by the region, 24 bars, Mariachi performances and shopping from local artisans, according to a news release. Some amenities will come at an extra fee, though pricing information is not yet available.
Wallace said the company consults government officials, business leaders and other local stakeholders when developing a project of that kind.
'But we also know what our role is, and we are firmly a vacation company. And our philosophy is to celebrate the destinations that we go to, not try to replicate that,' she said. 'It's that careful balance of knowing what it means to celebrate a culture and really leaning into art, music, food, and that being the hallmarks of the experience that give us the ability to kind of celebrate that culture.'
What else should travelers know?
Perfect Day Mexico is one of several land-based destinations the company has in the works:
Royal Beach Club Paradise Island will open in the Bahamas in December, where guests who purchase a day pass can enjoy beaches, pools, food and drinks – including from what is billed as the world's largest swim-up bar – and live music. Travelers can join a waitlist to be notified when reservations open.
Royal Beach Club Cozumel will follow in 2026. Guests will find beaches and pools, along with activities like kayaking, snorkeling and tequila tastings.
The company will also open a destination on the island of Lelepa in Vanuatu, featuring nature trails, dining and more. The 'locally inspired experience for guests in Australia and beyond' will open in early 2027, according to a news release, with additional specifics to follow.

'Love Island USA' star Yulissa Escobar apologizes after sudden exit over racial slur

'Love Island USA' star Yulissa Escobar apologizes after sudden exit over racial slur Show Caption Hide Caption 'Love Island USA' host Ariana Madix on if she watches 'The Valley' "Love Island USA" host Ariana Madix explains to USA TODAY's Ralphie Aversa what it would take to get her back on Bravo reality TV show. Days after Yulissa Escobar unceremoniously left the "Love Island USA" villa, she has issued an apology for the online controversy that preceded her sudden departure. Before the show's seventh season premiered June 3, fans of the show were in an uproar over resurfaced clips of her using a racial epithet on a podcast. But the 27-year-old Miami businesswoman had presumably already lost access to her phone during production in Fiji. Her exit was briefly mentioned in voiceover narration during the second episode on June 4. Now off the Peacock show, Escobar has addressed the social-media frenzy over her resurfaced comments. "First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using. Podcast clips from years ago have recently resurfaced, and I want to address it directly," Escobar wrote in the caption of a June 6 Instagram post. "In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur. I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it. I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use." Escobar continued to explain, "I was speaking casually in conversation, not thinking deeply or critically about what I was saying. But that doesn't take away from how wrong it was. The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment." She said she has "changed a lot since then" and acknowledged, "Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability." She denounced statements from others that "don't reflect me or my heart" and shared, "I'm choosing to speak for myself because I take full ownership of my actions." Escobar ended the post with contrition, writing, "To those who are disappointed or offended, I understand and I apologize. I am sorry." Peacock has not responded to USA TODAY's request for comment on Escobar's departure. The show's only on-air acknowledgement that Escobar was no longer on the show was Iain Stirling mentioning around 20 minutes into Episode 2, "Yulissa has left the villa." 'Love Island USA' complete guide: New to the show? Here's the must-know terminology Which contestants have been kicked off 'Love Island?' Over the years, a few Islanders have unceremoniously disappeared from the show, only to later emerge on social media with claims as to why they were no longer on screen. The show seldom issues an explanation through official channels. Some of these contestants who suddenly stopped appearing on the reality show included Season 2's Noah Purvis, Season 3's Leslie Golden and Season 4's Kyle Fraser. There have also been emotional departures over the previous six seasons, such as when Day 1 islander Josh Goldstein left the villa with then-partner Shannon St. Claire after his sister died. US changes travel threat level for controversial Caribbean port

US changes travel threat level for controversial Caribbean port originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Often, when the U.S. State Department makes a significant change to its travel advisory for a country, it brings a stiffer warning for travelers. This time, however, one of the latest advisory updates will help to ease worries for some travelers considering popular Caribbean cruises that visit the destination on a number of cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney Cruise revised travel advisory also gives the island's tourism industry reason to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The downgraded travel warning level comes not long after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged during a tour of the Caribbean that the U.S. would reevaluate its travel advisory to ensure that it reflected the progress the country has recently made in lowering its high violent crime rate. When he met with Rubio, the country's prime minister explained that the island is safer today than at any time in the last two decades. By collaborating with Rubio, he hoped to soon see his country's travel advisory updated to reflect the current state of affairs and help promote travel to the island. And on May 29, his wish came months after the meeting between Rubio and Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the State Department has updated its travel advisory for Jamaica, downgrading the warning level from Level 3: Reconsider Travel to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Travelers with upcoming plans to visit Jamaica on a Caribbean cruise or another summer trip should keep in mind that although the advisory has been downgraded, it still recommends that travelers remain extra cautious in Jamaica due to high levels of violent crime. 'While violent crime in Jamaica has decreased since 2024, it remains statistically high throughout the country,' the advisory emphasizes. 'Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Armed robberies and sexual assaults are common.' The advisory also cautions that the U.S. Embassy receives regular reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. travelers staying at Jamaican resorts.'U.S. citizens report slow or unsatisfactory response to serious criminal incidents,' the advisory adds. The State Department also wants travelers to be aware that medical services are limited in Jamaica. 'U.S. citizens should not expect the same level of health care available in Jamaica as is available in the United States,' the advisory states. 'This includes slower emergency service response times and less availability of care for illness or injury.' Additionally, the State Department recommends that U.S. citizens purchase travel insurance for Jamaica trips. 'Check with your travel insurance provider about evacuation assistance, medical insurance, and trip cancellation coverage,' the advisory ports in Jamaica include Falmouth, which is visited by cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line, as well as Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, visited by Carnival Cruise Line. Jamaica cruise ports are generally considered safe for tourists, but risks do exist. Cruise passengers visiting Jamaica should make sure to follow the State Department's guidance on ways to stay safe, which include: Avoid public buses. Avoid remote places. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt. Be aware of your surroundings and keep a low profile. Cruise passengers also need to be very careful not to accidentally bring firearms or ammunition, including stray rounds, shells, or empty casings, into Jamaican ports.'The penalties for carrying firearms or ammunition, even by mistake, are severe, and can include long prison sentences,' the State Department warns. For additional safety guidance for cruise ports in Jamaica, make sure to review any port-specific safety information provided by your cruise line and listen for any announcements from your ship's captain. You can also reduce your chances of becoming a target for criminals by booking shore excursions directly through your cruise line. Cruise lines are careful to only partner with trusted tour operators to help ensure a safe and enjoyable port experience for their passengers.
