The Surfer to Night Always Comes: the seven best films to watch on TV this week

Lorcan Finnegan's sunburnt psychological thriller is an electrifying throwback to Australian cinema's new wave of the 70s and its studies in toxic masculinity. Nicolas Cage is almost too perfectly cast as 'the Surfer', a father hoping to introduce his teenage son to his childhood seaside home and ride some waves. However, a gang of larrikins led by Julian McMahon's smug Scally deem Luna Bay a locals-only venue – and will do anything to stop his attempts to surf there. This brightly lit but darkly menacing film grows increasingly hallucinatory and nightmarish as the Surfer is stripped of his money, phone, food, car, even his board. And Cage on the edge is, as always, a magnetic watch.

Musician/author Willy Vlautin's modern noir novel is brought to the screen in gritty style by two alumni of The Crown – director Benjamin Caron and lead Vanessa Kirby – though the subject matter couldn't be more different. Set over a taut 24 hours, it follows Kirby's Lynette as she races around the city to find the $25,000 needed to buy her home before she, her brother and feckless mother are evicted. A drip-feed of revelations about her traumatic past life accompany the desperate quest, with Kirby superb as a woman torn between what she wants and what she needs. Out now, Netflix
The great British partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger was nearing its end in 1957 when they produced this fact-based second world war drama. It isn't up there with their many classics (Powell himself was particularly scathing about it) but there's a surprising jollity to its story of a mission to kidnap a German general (Marius Goring) in 1944 Crete and spirit him off the island. Dirk Bogarde is the nonchalant leader of the operation, Maj 'Paddy' Leigh Fermor, while the local resistance are a fun-loving bunch despite the occupation. Saturday 16 August, 3pm, U&Yesterday
In a Casablanca far from the tourist traps, petty criminal Hassan (Abdellatif Masstouri) and his as-yet untainted son Isaam (Ayoub Elaid) are hired by Hassan's boss to abduct a man. Unfortunately, the victim suffocates in their van, so they set off across the city in an error-strewn attempt to dispose of the body before daylight. Kamal Lazraq's neorealist Cannes winner offers a raw but sometimes comic closeup on the underbelly of Moroccan society, while the shifts in the father-son relationship give the film dramatic heft, despite the leads being nonprofessional.Saturday 16 August, 10.30pm, BBC Four

As a tribute to the late Michael Madsen, you could do worse than Quentin Tarantino's 1992 debut. He certainly steals the film as Mr Blonde, with his dance/torture routine to the strains of Stuck in the Middle With You. But there's a lot more to recommend it, from the smart if expletive-filled dialogue to the rug-pulling flashback plot structure, as a gang of robbers – including Harvey Keitel and Tim Roth – assemble after a botched diamond heist to work out who is the mole in their midst. Monday 18 August, 11.35pm, ITV4
'There is no sex in Georgian dance!' The strictures of tradition – choreographically and sexually – come down heavily on Merab (an affecting Levan Gelbakhiani), a student dancer at the Georgian National Ensemble, where a 'masculine' performance style is the rule. His attraction to new boy/rival Irakli (Bachi Valishvili), which may be mutual, further complicates his feelings about his art and life. Levan Akin's 2019 film – do check out his more recent trans drama Crossing – is a tender, troubling coming-of-age tale set in a world where difference is only tolerated at the margins of society. Tuesday 19 August, 1.50am, Channel 4
This early Brian De Palma effort from 1970 shows the New York-based director playing around with some of his influences (Godard, Hitchcock) in a lively if slightly scattergun satire. Robert De Niro – himself not fully formed as an actor – plays a voyeuristic film-maker trying to make a movie by spying on his neighbours in the apartment block opposite. This devolves into a bizarre mock documentary about a radical theatre group staging an experience called Be Black Baby, which features paint and an education in racial inequality.Tuesday 19 August, 3.10am, Talking Pictures TV

Jazz pianist Fergus McCreadie thought job offer from Spike Lee 'was spam'

A Scottish jazz pianist was left stunned after celebrated film director Spike Lee phoned him up to ask if he would work on a new McCreadie thought the initial calls and messages from the Do The Right Thing and Black KKKlansman director could be a he soon found himself flying to New York to work on the crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest, alongside his pianist - who won the Scottish Album of the Year in 2022 - told BBC Scotland News the whole experience, which included Lee visiting Edinburgh to watch him play a gig - was surreal. The film score uses Fergus's track Stony Gate throughout, incorporating it into the main score composed by Howard explained: "I got a call from a New York number in July last year. I just assumed it was spam, and then I got an email from someone saying it was Spike Lee - I thought that was spam too."Eventually I think my manager was like 'maybe we should just check in case it is real' and it turned out it was real. "After that he flew to Edinburgh that week to come and see a gig I was doing and then the rest is history I suppose." Joined by the other members of his jazz trio - bassist David Bowden and drummer Stephen Henderson - Fergus travelled to New York, where he found himself attending a NBA game featuring the director's beloved New York also managed to persuade Lee, who won an Oscar for best adapted screenplay in 2019, to pose with a scarf of Glasgow football team Queen's in the studio, it was a case of playing through Stony Gate, with Lee showing the musicians the scene the track was accompanying, in order to whip up the right originally from Dollar but now living in Glasgow, said: "It was more of a playing gig rather than a composing gig in a way. Spike really wanted to incorporate Stony Gate into the score so Howard orchestrated that, and then we just came and played the music."I think, generally, especially in orchestra sessions, they usually just barrel through really quickly. But Spike shows everyone the scene as it is, with demo music."He really seemed to care a lot about people really understanding what the point of the music was and matching it to the emotion of the scene." Fergus, a Mercury Music Prize nominee in 2022, told BBC Scotland being involved in film music had previously felt like it was a pipe he now hoped to have further opportunities to work on added: "It's so surreal, it still feels like a weird sort of fever dream. It doesn't really feel like it happened."It's honestly crazy, but but it's also a real honour to be amongst all the musicians that made this soundtrack happen."The film has been released in the USA, and is due to stream on Apple TV+ in is a reimaging of Japanese director Akira Kurosawa's 1963 release High and Low, with Denzel Washington in the leading role.

Costeen Hatzi opens up on public breakup with tennis firebrand Nick Kyrgios and what she regrets about their time together

Costeen Hatzi had to endure the pain of a breakup being played out in public, but she found her own strength and has now spoken out about her high profile split from Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios. Hatzi is an Australian influencer and interior design graduate known for her strong social media presence, with over 174K followers on Instagram alone. However it was her high-profile relationship with tennis star Nick Kyrgios that really put her in the spotlight for most Australians. Hatzi and Kyrgios began dating in late 2021, with the tennis star confirming their relationship on Instagram in December that year. She quickly became a constant figure courtside, supporting him through the 2022 Australian Open where his fiery on-court antics drew headlines. Their relationship was often in the spotlight, with Kyrgios publicly praising Hatzi while also facing criticism for his behaviour during matches. Hatzi was a constant courtside presence during the 2022 Australian Open as Kyrgios drew headlines for his fiery play In early 2023, rumours of tension surfaced, fuelled by Kyrgios's absence from tournaments due to injury and speculation about their future. By mid-2024, Hatzi confirmed their split. Now she has spoken about the public breakup, the pain, and the healing she has needed to do since they parted ways. And Hatzi has also revealed the lengths she went to in order to keep Kyrgios happy, and the regrets she has from their time together. 'I was fully supportive,' she told News Corp. 'I went to all the tournaments. I was doing everything behind the scenes – his washing, his cooking … everything. 'I was happy to, because I loved him and we had a great relationship at the time. So I don't regret anything that I've done.' Hatzi said she had used the last year to work on her own career out of Kyrgios' shadow, which she admitted was tough at times. 'It's different now. I have all this time for myself. I'm in a really reflective but motivated place. It has definitely been a bit of an adjustment, but I mentally prepared myself for that; it wasn't a shock,' she said. 'This year has been like a transition period. Of course there are days where, you know, I'm not a hundred per cent happy, but I feel like I've been headstrong, and I have a positive outlook on life. 'Going through a break-up isn't going to tear me down or upset me too much. I just need to look forward and throw myself into work, throw myself into fitness – and that's what I've been doing, really. 'I have a lot of time on my hands now so I'm trying to grow and expand my business,' she says. 'I've been leaning deeper into my career with fashion and beauty and content creation. 'It's a big focus for me – building a brand that's accessible and empowering, and style forward for women. 'That chapter of my life was meaningful and I'm grateful for the memories and the growth that came with it. You know, life changes. 'And so do people. I'm really just embracing this next chapter of rediscovery and independence and building something that's truly mine.' And Hatzi credited her family and friends for giving her the strength to carry on after the breakdown of the long-term relationship in the public eye. 'They've given me great advice to just focus on myself and be the classier person when it comes to the break-up,' she said. 'I've really taken that on board, because I don't want to ruin his name. Sometimes my emotions get the better of me, but then I remember that it's not in my nature to say anything bad about him. 'We still had a beautiful relationship, even though things didn't turn out the way [I'd hoped]. I've found peace within myself, and I hope he's happy. I don't wish bad upon him at all.'

Bianca Censori flashes huge smile in tiny outfit on date with Kanye West

Bianca Censori looked uncharacteristically smiley as she stepped out for a family dinner with husband Kanye West yesterday. The Australian model, 30, has attracted media attention on multiple occasions since marrying the 48-year-old rapper in a private ceremony in 2022. Once an architectural designer for his brand, Yeezy, she's now synonymous with revealing outfits, having exposed some serious skin on both red carpets and during casual outings with her other half. Typically, while Bianca wears very little on her body, she always has a stoic expression plastered across her face, seldom smiling, even for paparazzi at major A-list events. But when grabbing food with Ye in Los Angeles, California, on Thursday, she couldn't have appeared happier. Whether breaking character was due to the company she was keeping or something else, we'll never know, but we're sure some good food helped with her mood, as the A-list lovebirds dined at Denny's. Along with showcasing her pearly whites, however, Bianca also displayed her lean physique, opting to go braless in a tiny ensemble. She wore a super low-cut, baby blue cami top with spaghetti straps, teamed with a pair of tight-fitting micro shorts. Bianca also wore her raven locks in a natural, straight style in a hairdo that has seen her likened to Ye's ex-wife and mother of his children, Kim Kardashian, in the past. In contrast, during their outing, the Gold Digger hitmaker was, as usual, fully clothed, sporting a black tracksuit and a stern expression. It's believed the couple were grabbing a bite to eat after a screening of the hit new horror mystery flick Weapons, which stars Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. Bianca and Ye appeared content in one another's company during their day date, chatting while walking. And after photos of them surfaced online, people had plenty to say, with one Instagram commenter, @virgoskye, hoping Bianca's more vibrant appearance was a 'good sign', after fans previously expressed concern for the nature of her relationship with Ye. Other social media users were taken aback by Bianca's ever-so-slightly more reserved attire, noting it was the 'most clothes [they've] seen her in'. 'She is a beautiful girl truly!', @ said. While @mizzlindzy said, 'I'm convinced he's exploiting her', others defended Ye against such allegations, as @ash_belize penned: 'If they are happy. Who cares 🤷🏽‍♂️ let them live.' Fans have become accustomed to seeing rather a lot of Blanca in recent years, whether it be her totally nude Grammys dress, some skimpy lingerie, or exposing her body in a photoshoot for Ye's Insta. In the past, particularly after igniting rage with Bianca's sheer Grammys look, Ye has admitted to having 'dominion' over his wife. Having been accused of 'abusive' and 'controlling' behaviour earlier in the year, the artist took to X with a rant but also insisted that he would not make her wear something she felt uncomfortable in. The divisive rap star added at the time that 'anyone who called my wife's Grammy look a stunt is dumb and laaaame [sic]'. 'She been dressing naked for 2 years. Now all of a sudden it's a stunt. Every single b***h on the planet wish they had her bravery body platform and access to money and a husband that supported they personal expression,' he continued. Meanwhile, the spouses have long been fighting off rumours of divorce, having parted ways just months back. But, they seemingly patched up their issues and got back together. On his latest album, WW3, Ye hinted at a brief split in his lyrics of a track titled Bianca. He sang: 'My baby she ran away / But first she tried to get me committed / Not going to the hospital 'cause I am not sick I just do not get it. 'She's having a panic attack and she is not liking the way that I tweeted / Until Bianca's back I stay up all night I'm not going to sleep / I really don't know where she's at.' More Trending He also rapped that she left him after he installed a tracking app on her phone, pleading for her to go back to him. Of course, it didn't take long for fans to begin digging into the words, but Ye and Bianca soon quashed speculation that they were heading for a legal separation, having posed together for photos on social media and on public outings. It now appears they are more united than ever—publicly, at least—with Bianca spotted stepping into the stepmother role with Ye's young kids North, 12, Saint, nine, Chicago, seven, and Psalm, six. Reality star Kim's co-parenting struggles with her ex are no secret, but it seems her children give their dad's new wife the stamp of approval. Got a story?
