Haryana RTS panel orders ₹5K compensation to electricity consumer in Rohtak

Hindustan Times13 hours ago
The Haryana Right to Service Commission (RTS) has directed the concerned authorities to deduct ₹ 6,000 from the June month salary of a power department accountant, holding the official responsible for the harassment of a Rohtak-based electricity consumer. The Commission has termed this as very unfortunate saying that such a simple case could not be resolved at the level of first grievance redressal authority or second grievance redressal authority. The Haryana RTS has ordered that out of the ₹ 6,000 to be deducted from the salary of the official, ₹ 1,000 will be the fine to be imposed on the accountant in question and that ₹ 5,000 will be either paid as compensation to the complainant or adjusted in the consumer's bill.
The Commission said that there was a delay of about one year in updating the consumer's metre change order in the system. Though the metre change order was updated by the department on June 11, 2023, the error remained in the consumer's bill, due to which he had to repeatedly lodge complaints and visit the office.
This error was ultimately rectified only with the intervention of the Commission. The Commission has termed this as very unfortunate saying that such a simple case could not be resolved at the level of first grievance redressal authority or second grievance redressal authority.
In a statement the Commission said that it was possible only due to the auto appeal system started by the Haryana Right to Service Commission that a consumer and his son could send their complaint to the Commission from home without any additional cost and they could get a total refund of ₹ 15,838 and ₹ 16,330, out of which ₹ 16,330 was received only as a result of the intervention of the Commission.
'The Commission has ordered that an amount of ₹ 6,000 be deducted from the salary of the concerned accountant… ₹ 1,000 be deposited in the state fund and ₹ 5,000 be adjusted in the consumer's bill or transferred to his bank account. Instructions have been given to ensure this payment by obtaining bank details from the consumer,' the spokesperson said.
Apart from this, the Commission has also advised the Junior Engineer working as Second Grievance Redressal Authority-cum-XEN and First Grievance Redressal Authority to take consumer complaints seriously at the primary level itself and ensure timely resolution so that common citizens do not have to approach the Commission.

Indian PSUs seek further ties with UAE in steel and aluminium sectors

New Delhi: Union steel minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday met UAE economy minister Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri in Dubai to discuss trade expansion, resource security, and collaborative innovation in steel and aluminium. The two met at a time when India's leading public sector utilities are eyeing business opportunities in West Asia, particularly the UAE. The UAE can play a key role in helping India achieve its target of producing 300 million tonnes of steel by supporting raw material security and providing energy-efficient production systems, said Kumaraswamy in his meeting with the UAE economy minister. 'India and UAE can be strong partners in green steel production and sustainable industrial growth,' he said. Indian PSUs Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), and Metallurgical & Engineering Consultants India Ltd (MECON) are looking to expand their footprint and strengthening ties with the UAE, a statement from Kumaraswamy's office said. SAIL is exploring long-term supply tie-ups and the potential to serve the UAE's infrastructure and industrial sectors with premium Indian steel, as per the statement. Similarly, NMDC, India's largest iron ore producer, is keen to collaborate with UAE-based entities in developing the mining value chain. Meanwhile, MECON, India's premier engineering consultancy, aims to contribute to oil & gas, steel plant development, and smart infrastructure projects across the Gulf. The Union steel minister called for the creation of a joint working group to identify opportunities under the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). 'India does not see the UAE as just a market, but as a strategic partner in reshaping the global industrial landscape,' Kumaraswamy said. 'We invite UAE investors and industry leaders to visit India and experience our steel sector's dynamism firsthand." Since the signing of the India-UAE CEPA in 2022, bilateral merchandise trade has nearly doubled from $43.3 billion in FY21 to $83.7 billion in FY24. A key target of this CEPA is to take the non-oil trade between India and the UAE to $100 billion by 2030.

Lupin carves out consumer healthcare biz into wholly owned subsidiary

Mumbai-based pharmaceutical major Lupin on Tuesday announced the strategic carve-out of its consumer healthcare business, LupinLife Consumer Healthcare (LCH), into a wholly owned subsidiary. The carve-out will be effective from 1 July 2025, according to the company's regulatory filing on the exchanges. The company said the initiative aligns with its aspiration to establish a specialised consumer healthcare entity, with an enhanced focus on India's rapidly growing self-care market. 'This restructuring will enable enhanced focus with targeted investments, leading to increased consumer impact, market expansion, and accelerated growth,' Lupin said in a statement. Since its inception in 2017, LCH has developed a strong over-the-counter (OTC) portfolio, which includes brands such as Softovac, Beplex Forte, Corcium, and Aptivate. Commenting on the development, Nilesh Gupta, Managing Director at Lupin, said the move reinforces the company's mission of developing high-impact businesses that drive sustained value. While revenue for Lupin's consumer healthcare business is not reported separately, the company recorded a 13.47 per cent rise in total revenue from operations, from ₹2 trillion in financial year 2023–24 (FY24) to ₹2.27 trillion for FY25. The growth in FY25 was led by strong sales and profitability, driven by in-line and new products, along with consistent improvement in operating margins. On Tuesday, Lupin's shares rose 1.21 per cent to close at ₹1,961.30 apiece on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
