Yankees' Devin Williams' brutal 7-word reflection after latest disaster vs. Astros
Devin Williams endured another rough outing on Friday night, giving up a go-ahead single to Carlos Correa in the 10th inning and a two-run homer to Taylor Trammell in the New York Yankees' 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros. After the game, Williams didn't hold back, admitting,

Manager Aaron Boone has removed him from the closer role for the second time this year, yet he still turned to him in a tie game on Friday. Boone explained that he wanted to avoid using David Bednar, Mark Leiter Jr., and Luke Weaver due to their recent workloads, acknowledging that Williams 'is struggling' but stressing, 'You gotta use your guys.'
Cam Schlittler overcame a shaky first inning, in which José Altuve hit a two-run homer, to hold Houston to those two runs over five innings despite allowing seven hits. The Yankees also got help from Cody Bellinger, who threw out Trammell at the plate in the fourth to keep the game close. Still, Houston's bullpen, led by Josh Hader's scoreless ninth inning, closed the door in extras, securing the Astros' third win in their last four games and trimming the Yankees' lead for the final American League Wild Card spot to just half a game.

The first pitch before the Washington Nationals' game on Thursday was a full circle moment for two Little League World Series opponent. The pitcher: Mo'ne Davis, one of the biggest viral sensations in the tournament's history. The catcher: Nationals outfielder Robert Hassell III, who faced Davis in 2014. And struck out against her. For her part, Davis remembered her coach pointing out Hassell as a dangerous hitter when asked about him Thursday: "I remember before the game, going over the lineup with out coach, he's like 'Yeah, so, they have this kid named Robert, we have to watch out for him. He's a really good hitter, he might be their best hitter, so just be careful, he bats at the top of the lineup.' I'm like, 'Alright, OK.' "He stands close to the plate, I was like, 'Alright, I gotta really lock in here.' I don't want to hit him, get him on base, give them any type of momentum. I was really feeling everything that game. I ended up striking him out which was pretty cool, so I have bragging rights right now. He can't get his redemption back from me." Now 24 years old, Davis was at Nationals Park in connection to the tryouts for the Women's Pro Baseball League scheduled to take place at the same stadium next week. Since the 2014 LLWS, she has released a memoir, played softball at Hampton University and graduated from Columbia University with a master's in sports management. As for Hassell, his bat made him a top 100 prospect in the minor leagues. He was among the many young players the San Diego Padres sent to Washington in the blockbuster Juan Soto trade in 2022. He made his MLB debut this season and entered Thursday slashing. .250/.264/.356 with two homers in 106 plate appearances.

Keith scores on sacrifice fly in 11th, Tigers rally to top Twins 4-3
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Colt Keith scored on Gleyber Torres' sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Detroit Tigers overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Thursday night. Riley Greene hit his team-leading 28th home run to help Detroit win for the fourth time in five games and fifth in seven. Starting at second base in the 11th inning, Keith advanced to third on a wild pitch by Erasmo Ramírez (0-1) and scored on a Torres' sacrifice fly. Rafael Montero (1-1) got the final four outs for the Tigers. Detroit starter Tarik Skubal overcame a shaky third inning to get through seven innings, allowing three runs. He had only three strikeouts. When he last faced the Twins on June 29, he struck out 13 in seven innings. Edouard Julien homered before Ryan Jeffers and Luke Keaschall had RBIs in a three-run Minnesota third, but Skubal retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced. After starter Bailey Ober got two quick outs in the fourth, Kerry Carpenter doubled and Greene's home run cut the Detroit deficit to 3-2. Key moment Minnesota's Alan Roden tried to score from third with one out in the 10th inning on a half-swing by Austin Martin, but was thrown out at the plate by charging first baseman Spencer Torkelson, a call upheld by video review.
