Bus driver in fatal Northampton red light crash spared jail
A bus driver who killed an elderly pedestrian after driving through a red light has been given a suspended sentence.Timothy Pott, 55, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Brenda Hawes, 75, by dangerous driving in the St James area of Northampton.He was sentenced to 24 months' imprisonment, suspended for 16 months at Northampton Crown Court.Ms Hawes' husband of 55 years told the court it was "almost unbearable at times to live in our home on my own".
The court heard that Pott, of Ecton Park Road in Northampton, was driving a single-decker Stagecoach bus along St James Road at about 08:30 GMT on 26 February 2024 when he failed to stop at a red light.The vehicle hit Ms Hawes, who was walking on a pedestrian crossing on her way to the charity shop where she volunteered.Northamptonshire Police said she died at the scene "despite the efforts of the emergency services".
In his victim impact statement, her husband said: "I still have times when my emotions take over. I miss her, our love and companionship in the 60 years since I met her at ballroom and old-time dancing lessons."We continued dancing until she died – going to tea dances twice a week. "We all miss her greatly for her love and helpfulness. She worked at the RVS shop at Northampton General Hospital for 17 years and did voluntary work at three charity shops at various times."
'Almost unbearable without her'
He said that he had decided to sell their house as it was "almost unbearable at times" to be there without her.Alongside his suspended jail sentence, Pott was also ordered to undertake 240 hours of unpaid work and complete 10 rehabilitation days. He was disqualified from driving for five years and will have to undertake an extended retest when the ban ends.Det Con Lee Norton, from Northamptonshire Police, said: "No sentence will ever make up for Brenda's death and I hope Timothy Pott is aware that his driving that day failed to meet the standard required and his lapse of concentration, no matter how brief it may have been, has left a family devastatingly heartbroken."

A man and woman were hospitalised after being mauled by a 'Bully-type dog' in a savage attack at home. The police seized the vicious dog along with two others at the house in Blackpool on Havelock Street at 2.38am on June 15. The man, in his 30s, and the woman, in her 20s, suffered serious injuries and are currently being treated in hospital. A spokesperson for Lancashire Police told The Sun: 'We were called at 2.38am today by colleagues at the North West Ambulance Service to an address in Havelock Street, Blackpool, to a report two people had been attacked by a dog. 'Officers attended and found that a man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s had suffered dog bite injuries. They were taken to the hospital for treatment. 'A bully-type dog involved in the attack has been seized, as have two other dogs at the premises.' It comes after a 'monster' XL bully mauled three young girls after it reacted in a 'very aggressive' way to a knock at the front door. Victoria Hewitt wrestled with seven-and-a-half stone pet Karma as it savaged and ' dragged' the 'screaming' children at her home in Costessey, Norfolk, and desperately tried to coax it away from them with ham she grabbed from the fridge. A brave neighbour eventually wrestled the animal to the ground and Hewitt desperately yelled 'Shoot the dog' when police arrived. Officers sedated Karma, who was later destroyed. All three girls – Hewitt's daughters aged eight and four and their 11-year-old friend - needed hospital treatment for bite and puncture wounds, a court heard. The eight-year-old sustained the most 'significant' injuries, including a deep wound down to the bone on her upper right arm. Hewitt, 42, is understood to have registered the pet under a new law brought in weeks earlier that required them to be registered - but also stated they must be kept securely. The semi-permanent makeup artist appeared in court last month where she was handed an eight-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, after admitting being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury. What is the law on XL Bullies? Since February 1 last year, it has been a criminal offence to own an XL bully dog in England and Wales without a certificate. To qualify for an exemption certificate, owners had to prove their XL bully was neutered by June 30. If the pup was less than a year old by January 31, they must have been neutered by the end of 2024, and evidence of this provided. As well as neutering their animals, XL bully owners seeking an exemption must also pay an application fee, hold active public liability insurance for their pets and ensure the dogs are microchipped. People with dangerously out of control dogs can be jailed for 14 years and banned from owning animals. Their their pets can also be put down.

Tributes to 'sweetest' Sheffield girl after Mosborough crash
The family of an 11-year-old child who died after she was hit by a van have paid tribute to their "beautiful baby girl".Elemie Wainwright was hit by a white Ford Transit in Mosborough just before 17:00 BST on Thursday, at the junction of High Street and Station was taken to hospital by ambulance but died a short time later.A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and traffic offences, but released on police bail after fully co-operating with officers.
