
Mysterious Surface Changes on Jupiter's Moon Point to Something Deep Below

The icy surface of Jupiter's moon Europa appears to be constantly changing, new data from the James Webb Space Telescope has revealed.
This phenomena, the team explained, is heightened in so-called "chaos regions" where surface features like cracks, plains and ridges end up jumbled and ensnared together.
"We think that the surface is fairly porous and warm enough in some areas to allow the ice to recrystallize rapidly," said paper author and geologist Richard Cartwright of Johns Hopkins University in a statement.
The different rates of crystallization across the icy moon point to a complex mix of geological processes at play—and provide further evidence for Europa harboring a liquid ocean beneath its frozen surface.

Astronomers refer to what we would call ice as "water ice." This distinguishes it from other frozen molecules such as carbon dioxide in the form of "dry ice," for example.
Here on Earth, water ice has a hexagonal crystalline structure that results from the hydrogen bonding at play between the water molecules.
(This structure actually spreads out the molecules more than in liquid water, making ice less dense than water, explaining why ice floats.)
On the surface of Europa, however, water ice is constantly bombarded by charged particles, disrupting the crystalline structure to form "amorphous ice" with a disordered layout.
Scientists have long speculated that Europa's surface is covered by a very thin veneer of amorphous ice—only around a fiftieth of an inch thick—which shields crystalline ice beneath.
In the new study, however, the researchers found evidence of crystalline ice both at depth but also on the surface of Europa, in particular in an area known as Tara Regio.
"Also, in this same region—generally referred to as a chaos region—we see a lot of other unusual things," said Cartwright.
These, he explained, includes "the best evidence for sodium chloride, like table salt, probably originating from its interior ocean. We also see some of the strongest evidence for carbon dioxide and hydrogen peroxide on Europa. The chemistry in this location is really strange and exciting."

According to the researchers, this region of fractured surface materials hints at geological processes pushing up materials from below.
"Our data showed strong indications that what we are seeing must be sourced from the interior, perhaps from a subsurface ocean nearly 20 miles beneath Europa's thick icy shell," said paper author and physicist Ujjwal Raut of the Southwest Research Institute in a statement.
"When we see evidence of carbon dioxide at the surface, we think it must have come from an ocean below the surface.
"The evidence for a liquid ocean underneath Europa's icy shell is mounting, which makes this so exciting as we continue to learn more."

Is there frozen water just floating around in outer space like 'dirty snowballs'?
GREENBELT, Md. – Astronomers now believe frozen water might be a common sight outside of our solar system thanks to newly reviewed data from Nasa's James Webb Space Telescope. According to the space agency, scientists have confirmed the presence of ice around HD 181327, a star that is similar to our Sun. The giant star is located about 155 light-years away from Earth and is thought to be around 23 million years old – much younger than the 4.6-billion-year-old Sun. But similar to our solar system's star, HD 181327 is surrounded by a large, dusty debris and that is where scientists say the ice exists. Previous research had suggested the presence of frozen water, but its potential existence wasn't solidified until after the Webb became operational. "Webb unambiguously detected not just water ice, but crystalline water ice, which is also found in locations like Saturn's rings and icy bodies in our solar system's Kuiper Belt," Chen Xie, the lead author of the new paper and an assistant research scientist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, said in a statement. As any novice would surmise, the debris disk is said to vary in water ice thickness, from being heavily populated to non-existent the closer you move to the star. "In the area of the debris disk closest to the star, Webb detected almost none. It's likely that the star's ultraviolet light vaporizes the closest specks of water ice. It's also possible that rocks known as planetesimals have "locked up" frozen water in their interiors, which Webb can't detect," NASA stated. Why is finding ice so important? It may lead to planet formation and bring together the origins of life. "The presence of water ice helps facilitate planet formation," Xie stated. "Icy materials may also ultimately be 'delivered' to terrestrial planets that may form over a couple hundred million years in systems like this." Water ice has already been observed in numerous locations within our solar system, including on Mercury, Mars, Saturn, our Moon, other planets' moons, and the Kuiper Belt. Scientists say what Webb has not picked up on yet are planets around HD 181327, which could be for various reasons, including the infancy of the distant solar system. Scientists Investigate as Whale Deaths Surge in San Francisco Bay

A total of 15 whales, including 14 gray whales and one minke whale, have died so far in 2025, according to a joint press release from California Academy of Sciences and the Marine Mammal Center. The latest death, a gray whale found in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday, marked the sixth whale death in as many days. Why It Matters There has been "unusually high number of sightings" of whales in the region this year but there has also been an increase in deaths. The whale population has seen a 45 percent decrease since the 2019- 2023 Unusual Mortality Event (UME), according to the release. A record-low number of newborn whales was also seen this year, causing concern among researchers for the long-term outlook for the North Pacific gray whales, following the second UME in a 20-year period. "These whales basically left the Arctic with a half tank," Giancarlo Rulli, a spokesperson for the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, recently told about the other deceased whales discovered in the region. "The food sources that they were normally accustomed to eating that were highly nutritious for this massive, 10,000–12,000-mile journey, had moved farther away due to climate change, and as a result, these whales were left to forage on food matter that was much less nutritious." What To Know The whale on Wednesday was found near the Alamere Falls in Point Reyes National Seashore, the joint release said, which is about 30 miles northwest of San Francisco. While some of the deceased mammals have been necropsied, others have either been too far decomposed or stranded in areas that are inaccessible, making it difficult to pin these deaths on one similar cause. While it is not unusual to see whales in the region as they migrate, the number of deaths is the highest it has been, including in 2019 when 14 whales were found deceased in the UME, according to the release. The number of deaths currently matches the record of 15 for all of 2021, the release said. At least three of these deaths have been attributed to suspected vessel strikes, but others remain undetermined. The whales that have been spotted alive have been observed to be either regular size or emaciated. There are a total of 33 confirmed gray whale sightings in the San Francisco Bay this year, compared to only six seen last year, with about a third of those whales remaining in the bay for about 20 days. Photo byWhat People Are Saying The California Academy of Sciences and partners at The Marine Mammal Center said in the press release: "With San Francisco Bay serving as a shared space for commerce and increased gray whale activity, experts at the Academy and the Center note it's vital that all boaters—from large commercial vessels to sailboats—be 'whale aware' and continue to slow down. Gray whales often have a very low profile in the water that can make them difficult to sight, unlike other coastal whales like humpback whales." What Happens Next The results of the necropsy on the whale found on Wednesday are still pending, complicated by a number of factors due to "inaccessible locations that hinder full post-mortem investigations, as well as poor tissue quality from advanced decomposition, and the lack of available locations to tow for further investigation." Meanwhile, the whales that are alive are expected to be in "the bay for another one to two weeks before continuing their annual northern migration to arctic feeding grounds," according to the release. If people do see whales, they can report them through an app called Whale Alert or the Marine Mammal Center website. Sightings of dead whales should be reported to the Academy's department of Ornithology and Mammalogy.
