Josh Freese reveals he's been let go from the Foo Fighters

Josh Freese has taken to Instagram to confirm his departure from the Foo Fighters, just two years after he was selected as the permanent successor to the late Taylor Hawkins.
He joined Dave Grohl and co. with a hefty resume that boasted stints with Guns N' Roses, Nine Inch Nails, and Devo, and his appointment was announced with a little help from Chad Smith, Tommy Lee, and Danny Carey. Now, though, Freese's time with the rock heavyweights has come to a somewhat unexpected end.
'The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they'e decided to go in a different direction with their drummer. No reason was given,' he says in his post, not wanting to skirt around the facts. 'Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band.'
His dismissal may feel like unfamiliar territory, as Freese goes on to reveal: 'In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I've never been let go from a band.'
'I'm not angry – just a bit shocked and disappointed,' he expands. 'But as most of you know I've always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I'm fine. Stay tuned for my 'Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters' list.'
A look at Freese's career shows that he's never been short of an opportunity, and never shy to take them up.
He's worked with Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa, A Perfect Circle, and Weezer, and recorded for Good Charlotte, Avril Lavigne, and Kelly Clarkson as a session artist. Though being axed from Dave Grohl's global force will be a shock to his system, he will likely be back in action again very soon.
Freese had joined the band after the release of their first post-Hawkins album, 2023's But Here We Are, on which Dave Grohl played drums. That means he never had the chance to record with the band, but did enjoy a world tour that saw him jam Hot For Teacher with Wolfgang Van Halen.
It did, conversely, also include 'the saddest thing that's ever happened' in Dave Grohl's life, after his guitar stopped working in front of 50,000 people.
Freese's last show was reportedly a humble affair last September. The band had played a private event at House Of Blues Anaheim for Anaheim Duck owners, Henry & Susan Samueli.
As for the Foo Fighters, it will be interesting to see what the change of direction Freese has alluded to will mean. Aside from playing with the Foos, Grohl has played a handful of Nirvana reunion shows recently, including one with a revolving cast of superlative female talents.

Neckbreakker released one of 2024's most exciting metal debut albums. Now they're about to live their biggest dream
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When Joakim Høholt Kaspersen co-founded Neckbreakker in 2020, aged 15, one of the Danes' dreams was to play Copenhell, his home country's premier metal festival. 'As a Danish band, that is the thing that you strive towards,' the guitarist says of the 35,000-capacity weekender. He was just 19 when that dream came true. 'We'd all been going to that festival for years before we played it,' he continues with a smile. 'It's a place where the entire metal scene unites every year, so, when we played, it was like playing a festival where half of the crowd are your friends.' Performing at one of Scandinavia's biggest festivals is just the first item on the list of colossal things these death metal upstarts have accomplished. Now aged between 18 and 22, they've already signed to Nuclear Blast and released propulsive debut album Within The Viscera in December 2024. In a 'full-circle' moment, they've also been announced as the opening act on Slayer's mega-gigs when they return to the UK in July, a fitting position considering the thrash legends were Joakim's gateway into extreme metal. 'I started listening to thrash and learned a bunch of Slayer [on guitar],' Joakim recalls. 'When I found Death's Scream Bloody Gore and to me that sounded just like Slayer but more aggressive. Before I knew it, I was listening to death metal and going to pretty much every metal show I could. I got exposed to a lot of different subgenres.' You can hear those influences on Within The Viscera, a tooth-gnashing, headbanging mix of the nastiest bits in death metal and beyond. Deathcore breakdowns and scathing lead guitar lines frequently join its melee of chainsaw-like riffs, while pummelling beatdowns are never too far away. 'I've gotten very, very much into hardcore,' Joakim says. 'But a lot of the drumming on the record was inspired by our old drummer Anton's [Bregendorf] love of rock music. His favourite drummer of all time is Dave Grohl.' Joakim formed Neckbreakker under the name 'Nakkeknaekker' in February 2020, . He admits it was hard work finding other members. 'I'm from Aarhus, which is a pretty big city,' Joakim says. 'But the other guys in the band are from smaller cities in Jutland. There just isn't a metal scene outside of the bigger cities in Denmark.' Making the search even harder was how young he was. 'When I went to shows and stuff, there weren't a lot of people my age,' he says with a shrug. 'Even the people that were, they probably didn't play any instruments themselves.' Nonetheless, Joakim did eventually gather a lineup…three weeks before COVID-19 forced shows to be cancelled for more than a year. Rather than impatiently split up, the band practiced incessantly for 18 months, holed away in their rooms perfecting their instruments. All that time writing and playing made their gigs as sharp as machetes once restrictions were lifted. 'I think it helped us because we didn't think about having to book shit or anything like that,' Joakim reflects. 'We just wrote songs and played them all day. I remember, we would have rehearsals that were 12 hours long, but we would just be playing the same four songs again and again.' Nakkeknaekker burst out of lockdown like a rabid pitbull, playing all over Denmark in 2022 before going international the following year. They dominated the New Blood stage at Bloodstock Open Air, where the crowd relentlessly moshed to their well-honed savagery. 'That was our second or third show out of Denmark and it was just incredible,' Joakim says. But while they'd enjoyed some serious momentum, the band soon realised they'd need to change things if they wanted to continue reaching international audiences. Their expansion abroad showed the band that the name Nakkeknaekker was no longer fit for purpose, with the members noticing how many people overseas struggled to pronounce it. So, they translated the moniker into English and added an extra K. The rebrand was unveiled in late 2024, when it was announced that the five-piece were the newest additions to Nuclear Blast's roster. 'There's no other label that I'd rather be on as a metal band, to be honest,' he enthuses. 'They're just amazing people. The whole team seems to really, really understand metal and understand music. You can throw any reference to anything at them and they'll know exactly what you're talking about.' Since then, exciting news from the band seems to come as frequently as the tide. Their set on the Sunday of Download will be followed one day later by a gig supporting deathcore mavens Fit For An Autopsy. Then, of course, will come the Slayer shows, taking place at Cardiff's 35,000-capacity Blackweir Fields and London's 45,000-capacity Finsbury Park – presenting possibly the biggest crowds the band have played to yet. 'Words can't describe how excited me and the guys are to get the chance to support Slayer,' he enthuses. 'It still doesn't feel quite real, but we are just honoured and grateful to be a part of such an insane lineup.' The guitarist struggles to think when asked what his band have left to achieve – granted, who could come up with an answer better than 'playing my dream festival as a teenager' or 'supporting fucking Slayer'? For now, he wants to stick the course, playing more places and climbing further up posters. 'We still want to tour the US and Australia at some point,' he says. 'We just hope everything is going to get bigger and bigger.' Within The Viscera is out now via Nuclear Blast. Neckbreakker will play Download on June 15 and London with Fit For An Autopsy on June 16. They'll support Slayer in the UK in July

Aimee Lou Wood Was Seemingly So Upset About SNL Parodying Her. Now, An Insider Opens Up About The Response From Her Pals
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. As wild as the drama got on The White Lotus Season 3 — which ended its run on the 2025 TV schedule in April — the whispers of behind-the-scenes happenings has arguably been even juicier. That includes a potential feud between Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood, which was exacerbated by their reactions to a Saturday Night Live bit that mocked the actress' teeth. Wood slammed the sketch, and an insider is now revealing how her pals and co-stars responded. 'The White Potus' was a sketch that aired on the April 12 episode of SNL. Sarah Sherman appeared to portray Chelsea from The White Lotus (available to stream with a Max subscription) by donning prosthetic teeth that resembled Aimee Lou Wood's. The actress called it 'mean and unfunny,' and according to Life&Style, many of her castmates agreed. A source said: Everyone is rallying around her, well, everyone except Walton Goggins, who she's on the outs with, but the rest of the cast has totally been there for her. Rumors of tension between Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins spread after the actors went from saying absolutely glowing things about each other to unfollowing each other on social media. Goggins refused to address it, but many read into his own response to the Saturday Night Live sketch, which he called 'smashing,' commenting on the show's Instagram, 'Hahahahahhahaha Amazzzingggg.' Walton Goggins even went on to serve as a Saturday Night Live Season 50 host on May 10, but that was reportedly in the works before 'The White Potus' sketch drama. It's unknown what, if anything, has been said between him and his on-screen love (Goggins played Chelsea's partner Rick), but the insider claims the support she received from other friends has helped. They said: They've called her to tell her how absurd the sketch was. Other people have taken to social media to defend her, which has of course made her feel a whole lot better. Even SNL cast members have reached out to the actress, with Sarah Sherman sending her flowers and saying she 'never meant to hurt anyone's feelings." HOW SNL RESPONDED TO BACKLASH ➤ Sarah Sherman felt 'terrible' about making Aimee Lou Wood feel bad➤ Chloe Fineman admits 'parody can go too far'➤ Bowen Yang says actress' reaction was 'completely valid' ➤ Despite reports, SNL did not apologize to Aimee Lou Wood Aimee Lou Wood low-key stole The White Lotus Season 3, so it's understandable that she got frustrated that people were more focused on her teeth than her performance. However, when paparazzi photographed the actress sobbing in South London days after the Saturday Night Live sketch aired, she denied that was the reason. As for the supposed feud between her and Walton Goggins, the pair started following each other on Instagram again last month, and there are now rumors that they may be reuniting soon — if for no other reason, the Emmy campaign The White Lotus stars will inevitably be involved in. If you want to see the SNL sketch that upset Aimee Lou Wood and added fuel to the feud rumors, you can watch the April 12 episode or any other Saturday Night Live edition with a Peacock subscription. Vampire horror movie Sinners is now available to buy, and fans are rediscovering their favorite moments, from its killer soundtrack to Remmick's line delivery
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Sinners is now available on digital, and fans of the vampire horror flick have wasted no time in watching the movie again and sharing their favorite moments online. As of June 3, 2025, Ryan Coogler's horror hit is ready to buy and watch at home on Prime Video and other movie purchasing sites. This has led to a resurgence of Sinners discourse online, with many fans sharing key scenes they loved in the theater that they are now able to watch again and again – including that iconic music sequence. "Sinners exploring the past, present, and future of black music is one of the most magical moments in cinematic history," said one fan on Twitter. Upon Sinners' release, this scene in particular proved to be a hit with viewers, painting a powerful tapestry of African American culture throughout the decades. Another detail that fans have picked up on, which you may have missed in theaters, is when Smoke goes to visit Annie at her house. There, she strikes a match, which lines up perfectly with the backing track. "I was sold from the start with Sinners, but the moment Ludwig synced these guitar hits to the match strikes,' said one fan. 'I knew this movie was really something special." Of course, fans are not forgetting about some of the more horrific scenes that come later in the film. When Smoke, Sammie, and the others are hiding out at the Juke Joint, Remmick and his vampire army wait outside. In one jumpy moment, Remmick appears at the open door shouting, "Sammie!" Remmick's line delivery in this moment has reminded fans of star Jack O'Connell's rather underrated take on a vampire. "Finally, the Adam Sandler line delivery from Sinners has hit the timeline," said one Twitter user, adding that this is very much a compliment. "It reminded me of Jack Nicholson in The Shining," said another, with many other fans adding that they just cannot stop saying 'Sammie' just like Remmick. Sinners is certainly in the running to be the best movie of the year, and the reaction to its digital release just proves it. The movie hit theaters on April 18 and was met with rave reviews and a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes, pulling in over $350 million worldwide during its theatrical run.
