Can a batter have a runner in Test cricket?
Rules on substitute fielders
In the instance where a player comes off the field while fielding, they are allowed to be replaced by a substitute in the instance of injury, illness or another reason accepted by the umpires. However, this substitute is not permanent and only covers some or all of the innings in which that team is fielding.Substitute fielders are allowed to be the team's designated wicketkeeper but are not allowed to bowl or carry out captaincy duties.Should a player have a non-concussion related injury, they must either bat through the injury or not bat at all, reducing their team to 10 batters.
Should substitutes be allowed in Test cricket?
On the evening of the first day of the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, India wicketkeeper and vice-captain Rishabh Pant was forced off the field on the back of a buggy after sustaining an injury to his right foot.Pant initially retired but returned to bat on day two despite struggling to even walk down the stairs of the Old Trafford pavilion.Former England captains Michael Vaughan and Sir Alastair Cook debated the topic following the incident."I don't like that we've got four days left of action [as part of] an incredible series where we're going to have 10 v 11," said Vaughan."Once they brought in concussion subs, I was crying out saying let's just bring in substitutes in the first innings of a game. That would be my stepping point."Cook added: "I'm not sure I agree, I'm not sure what I think."We've just Pant walk off, he looks in all kinds of pain and [his foot] is not broken. Nothing on the x-ray is broken, it is just a bruise."If it's a broken foot, it's different thing but if you just get hit and it's a bruise, it's only a bruise. It is discomfort and you can't hold a bat as well as you would like, but it is just a bruise."This article is the latest from BBC Sport's Ask Me Anything team. Manny Machado, Padres notch four-game split with Cardinals
July 27 - Manny Machado went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs as the visiting San Diego Padres rolled over the St. Louis Cardinals 9-2 Sunday afternoon. Jackson Merrill drove in two runs for the Padres, who won their last two games to earn a split in this four-game series. Luis Arraez went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for San Diego and Xander Bogaerts hit a home run. Padres starter Stephen Kolek (4-5) earned his first victory since May 27 while allowing two runs on four hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out two. Alec Burleson hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who lost for the seventh time in 10 games. Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy (2-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two. The Padres broke out to a 2-0 first-inning lead. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a walk, went to third on Luis Arraez's single and scored on Machado's double. Arraez scored when center fielder Victor Scott II's errant throw hit Machado sliding into second base. San Diego increased its lead to 3-0 in the third inning. Tatis led off with a double, went to third on Machado's one-out single and scored on Merrill's groundout. Right fielder Jordan Walker spared the Cardinals further damage with a diving, inning-ending catch on Bogaerts' liner. But the Padres broke the game open in the fourth inning. Gavin Sheets and Jake Cronenworth hit singles to start a four-run rally. Sheets took third on a flyout and scored on Elias Diaz's bunt. Arraez hit a two-out RBI single and Machado hit a two-run double that made it 7-0. The Cardinals broke through in the sixth inning when Ivan Herrera walked and Burleson hit his 13th homer to cut the deficit to 7-2. Bogaert's seventh-inning homer extended it 8-2. San Diego made it 9-2 in the eighth inning on singles by Tatis, Machado and Merrill. --Field Level Media

India's Pant to miss fifth test against England with fractured foot
MANCHESTER, England, July 27 (Reuters) - India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will miss the fifth test against England at the Oval due to a fractured foot, The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Sunday. Pant retired hurt in India's first innings of the fourth test in Manchester, but re-emerged on day two, limping back onto the field to great applause from the Old Trafford crowd. Pant did not keep wicket in England's innings and was not needed to bat as India dug in to earn a hardfought draw and deny the hosts victory in Manchester. "The BCCI Medical Team will continue to monitor his progress and the team wishes him a speedy recovery," a BCCI statement said. "The Men's Selection Committee has named Narayan Jagadeesan as replacement for Rishabh Pant for the fifth test." Pant's fifty on day two, his third of the series in addition to centuries in each innings of the first test, took his run total to 479. He also passed former England captain Alec Stewart as the highest-scoring wicketkeeper in a single test series in England.
