Mara cannot sponsor students receiving aid from other agencies, says DG

The Star23-04-2025

KUALA LUMPUR: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman clarifies that the agency cannot offer sponsorships to students who have already received financial aid from other sources.
Commenting on the case involving medical students at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah (UniSHAMS), Zulfikri said their applications were rejected because they had secured loans from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).
He explained that when applications for the Tertiary Education Sponsorship Programme (TESP) opened last November, the guidelines clearly stated that receiving financial assistance from another agency would render an applicant ineligible, an established condition that has been in place for decades.
"This is not a new requirement. It's similar to applying for a home loan, you can't finance the same house with two separate banks.
"Likewise, Mara aims to prioritise Bumiputera students who have yet to receive support from any other sponsor," he said in a statement Wednesday (April 23).
Zulfikri also reaffirmed Mara's commitment to providing study loans to ensure equitable access to quality and competitive higher education.
He noted that since 1999, Mara has sponsored 423 students at UniSHAMS, with 173 currently receiving support across various fields, including 144 in medicine.
As of March 31, a total of 4,510 Bumiputera students pursuing medical studies in Malaysia are being sponsored by Mara.
Earlier media reports highlighted concerns raised by parents, who claimed that 50 medical students at UniSHAMS were under significant financial pressure after their Mara sponsorship applications were rejected.
They have since called for urgent intervention from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki to help resolve the matter. — Bernama

Cuckoo Malaysia's IPO sees modest retail demand, oversubscribed by 1.42 times

CUCKOO International Bhd, the Malaysian arm of South Korea's Cuckoo Homesys Co Ltd, has recorded modest public interest in its initial public offering (IPO), with an overall oversubscription rate of 1.42 times ahead of its Main Market debut on Bursa Malaysia scheduled for June 24. The company received 7,908 applications for 69.33 million shares, against the 28.66 million shares offered to the Malaysian public. 'The positive response for our IPO is both humbling and encouraging despite the market volatility and the rescheduling of our IPO to June 24, 2025,' said CEO Hoe Kian Choon in a statement today. 'It reflects the confidence investors have in Cuckoo Malaysia's vision, business model, and long-term growth potential.' Cuckoo had earlier revised its IPO issue price down from RM1.29 to RM1.08 per share, following the bookbuilding process and in light of a two-month deferment of its listing date due to market conditions. The Bumiputera public portion of the IPO saw an undersubscription of 0.35 times with 2,646 applications, while the remaining public portion drew a healthier response at 2.49 times oversubscription with 5,262 applications. Meanwhile, the institutional offering of 143.28 million shares was fully placed out to Malaysian and foreign investors. The 14.33 million shares reserved for eligible persons were also fully taken up, following a reallocation from the clawback of 179.1 million offer shares originally allocated to Bumiputera investors approved by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti). Notices of allotment will be issued on June 23, and successful retail applicants will receive a refund of 21 sen per share due to the downward price revision. The IPO is expected to raise RM154.74 million in gross proceeds, which will be channelled toward rental business expansion, loan repayments, new Brandshops, IT upgrades, and regional growth in Singapore. RHB Investment Bank is the principal adviser and sole managing underwriter, while it jointly acts as global coordinator and bookrunner alongside AmInvestment Bank. –TMR

Investors get refunds as Cuckoo sets IPO price at RM1.08, lower than initial RM1.29

KUALA LUMPUR: Cuckoo International (MAL) Bhd (CKI)'s initial public offering (IPO) has been oversubscribed by 1.42 times ahead of its listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd. In a statement today, the home appliance manufacturer said the final IPO price for its listing on the Main Market has been set at RM1.08 per share, lower than the initial reference price of RM1.29 per share. "As such, successful retail investors will receive a refund of the 21 sen price difference per share, without any interest," it said in a statement. According to Cuckoo, a total of 7,908 applications for 69.33 million shares were received from Malaysian public investors for the 28.65 million shares offered. The non-Bumiputera public investor portion saw the highest oversubscription rate of 2.49 times, while the Bumiputera public portion recorded an oversubscription rate of 0.35 times. Cuckoo said the 143.28 million shares offered via private placement to local and foreign institutional investors were fully placed out, indicating strong confidence from large-scale investors. In addition, it said 14.33 million shares allocated to eligible individuals, including Cuckoo group employees, were also fully subscribed. RHB Investment Bank Bhd and AmInvestment Bank Bhd are the joint global coordinators for this IPO. The share allotment notices will be posted to all successful applicants on June 23.

Budding technopreneurs have govt's full support, says Zahid

MELAKA: Students undertaking Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) should consider becoming technopreneurs, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The Deputy Prime Minister said TVET offers promising opportunities in the entrepreneurship sector. Government support is essential in realising such potential, he said. 'We are grateful for the growing trust of parents (in TVET) today. That is why we must find new ways to nurture and transform the mindset of TVET students into future technopreneurs.' Ahmad Zahid said to date, TVET institutions under Majlis Amanah Rakyat have produced 50 TVET millionaires. Speaking at the 2025 National TVET Day celebration, he said as Malaysia moves towards becoming a developed nation, the involvement of all parties in driving the country's progress must be properly coordinated. This is especially to help groups that are often seen as marginalised within the country's education system, he said. 'For instance, the National TVET Council has taken the responsibility to recruit huffaz students to join TVET so that their future can be better secured,' he said, Bernama reported. The Deputy Prime Minister cited examples, including huffaz students enrolled at Universiti Kuala Lumpur's aerospace and maritime affairs faculties as well as at Universiti Tenaga Nasional. 'The response has been quite good (from the huffaz) and we welcome their contributions to building this country,' he said.
