DRDO inaugurates Quantum Technology Research Centre at Metcalfe House
New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) inaugurated the Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) at Metcalfe House, Delhi, on Tuesday. The facility was inaugurated by the Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat, to further strengthen Indigenous quantum capabilities for strategic and defence applications.
QRTC is equipped with state-of-the-art experimental setups designed to propel research and development in critical quantum domains.
The key capabilities of this centre include Characterisation of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers and Distributed Feedback Lasers; Test-beds for evaluating single-photon sources; Set-up for characterisation of Micro-Fabricated Alkali Vapour Cell; and Experimental platforms for developing and validating Quantum Key Distribution techniques to enable ultra-secure communication and safeguard national security in the post-quantum era, spearheaded by Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), DRDO.
Spearheaded by the Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), QTRC also focuses on foundational technologies, including an ultra-small atomic clock based on Coherent Population Trapping for highly precise timekeeping in Global Navigation Satellite System-denied environments, an atomic magnetometer using optically pumped magnetometry for ultra-sensitive magnetic field detection, and Cutting-edge solid-state quantum devices and materials.
DRDO continues to lead India's quantum initiatives across verticals such as quantum sensing, secure communications, and post-quantum cryptography.
As a key stakeholder in the National Quantum Mission, DRDO is committed to fostering indigenous innovation and developing sovereign quantum technologies to secure India's strategic future.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Director General (Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems & Cyber Systems) Suma Varughese, whose vision and leadership were instrumental in conceptualising this cutting-edge facility. DG (Resource & Management), Dr Manu Korulla, and the Directors of SSPL and SAG, senior scientists, and other dignitaries attended the function. (ANI)

Industry body IESA pushes for green reuse of EV batteries
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): The Industry body, Energy Storage Association in India (IESA), has said the Centre should ensure collaboration among the Ministries of Environment, Power, and New and Renewable Energy to maximise the potential of used electric vehicle batteries in stationary applications and enhance material efficiency. The industry body said in a release that this partnership should focus on establishing clear norms for the reuse of used batteries, including necessary licensing and procedures. The industry body added that the country lacks a well-functioning open market to promote technology solutions for grid balancing. The IESA added that the ancillary services market needs improvement to enhance energy storage deployment and support the grid. It further added that the government should ensure the timely implementation of the draft Indian Electricity Grid Code (IEGC) 2022, allowing storage to be part of primary reserves. India needs to learn from other countries, especially the UK, which links ancillary service payments to service performance and categorises response times (sub-second, 1 second, 10 seconds, etc) to boost the adoption of suitable technologies, the IESA said. The recommendations also included lower entry barriers for technologies and stakeholders, import duty reduction, GST reduction, a compliance framework for energy storage obligations, and the addition of technical specifications for the operation of energy storage systems in tropical climatic conditions in India. The industry body said that a collaborative approach between the government and business can go a long way in ensuring sustainable growth for the energy storage market. Debmalya Sen, President, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) said, 'As we stand on the brink of a transformative shift in India's energy landscape, it is important that we foster a robust policy and regulatory framework that accelerates the deployment of energy storage solutions. Our recommendations, gathered from over 25 industry leaders, aim to ensure safety and innovation in energy storage technologies, ensuring a sustainable and secure energy future for all Indians. This will not only enhance grid stability but also propel us towards our ambitious renewable energy targets.' IESA has recommended to the government that nations worldwide are facing supply chain issues that threaten the growth strategies of various economies. Having a clear assessment of supply chain risks and a definite plan for material procurement is also very relevant for India, as it is planning to adopt energy storage to progress on its energy transition and provide a clear outlook of the energy storage market to all stakeholders. IESA has recommended to the government that nations worldwide are facing supply chain issues that threaten the growth strategies of various economies. Having a clear assessment of supply chain risks and a definite plan for material procurement is also very relevant for India, as it is planning to adopt energy storage to progress on its energy transition and provide a clear outlook of the energy storage market to all stakeholders. India, UK hold 17th UK-India Foreign Office Consultations, 1st Strategic Exports, Technology Cooperation Dialogue
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and UK Permanent Under-Secretary Oliver Robbins co-chaired the 17th UK-India Foreign Office Consultations and the inaugural Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue in the national capital on Tuesday, focusing on deepening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across trade, technology, defence, and people-to-people exchanges. The Foreign Secretary also thanked the UK Government for its expression of solidarity and support in India's fight against terrorism. '17th India-UK Foreign Office Consultations and 1st Strategic Exports and Technology Cooperation Dialogue co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Permanent Under Secretary Oliver Robbins were held in New Delhi. Wide ranging discussions on entire gamut of bilateral relations focusing on further deepening & diversifying India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in areas of Trade & Economy, Technology, Science, Innovation, Defence & Security, Education, Health & Climate & People-to-People exchanges took place. They also discussed the regional & global issues of topical significance. Geneva [Switzerland], June 3 (ANI): Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, PK Mishra, represented India at the opening ceremony of the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) in Geneva on Tuesday, underscoring India's steadfast commitment to global disaster resilience efforts through active participation and knowledge sharing. The event, jointly hosted by the United Nations for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the Government of Switzerland, saw India reaffirm its dedication to the Sendai Framework, aligning with its national policies to reduce disaster risks. 'Principal Secretary to PM Dr. P.K. Mishra participates in the opening ceremony of 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva, reinforcing India's commitment to global disaster resilience efforts,' the India at UN in Geneva posted on X. According to the UN, the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction is the main global forum to assess and discuss progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. The eighth session of the Global Platform (GP2025) organised by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) from June 2 to 6, 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland, hosted by the Government of Switzerland. The event will be co-chaired by the Government of Switzerland and UNDRR. The event is expected to assess and discuss progress made in the implementation of the recommendations put forward through the Political Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in May 2023 and to give practical guidance to accelerate its further implementation. GP2025 offers a chance for all stakeholders to recommit, with urgency, to accelerate progress on disaster risk reduction towards the achievement of sustainable development. The GP2025 agenda will be guided by the Sendai Framework, in particular its goal, four priorities for action and seven global targets, as well as the key priorities identified in the midterm review of the Sendai Framework, GP2022 Co-Chairs' Summary and Regional Platform meetings that will take place in 2024. Endorsed by the UN General Assembly following the 2015 Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (WCDRR), the Sendai Framework advocates for: The substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries. It recognises that the State has the primary role to reduce disaster risk but that responsibility should be shared with other stakeholders, including local government, the private sector and other stakeholders. UNDRR is tasked with supporting the implementation, follow-up and review of the Sendai Framework. (ANI)
