Farooq Abdullah condemns vandalisation of UP mausoleum

Srinagar, Aug 12 (PTI) National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah Tuesday condemned the vandalisation of a Sufi tomb in Uttar Pradesh, calling it a deliberate attempt to inflame communal passions and undermine the country's secular foundations.
Members of Hindu right-wing outfits created a ruckus at a mausoleum in Fatehpur district on Monday, claiming it to be a temple site where they had the right to pray.
Police booked more than 150 people for damaging public property and disturbing the peace.
'The desecration of any place of worship is unacceptable, but the targeting of a Sufi shrine, which represents India's age-old tradition of syncretic culture and spiritual inclusivity, is particularly distressing, Abdullah said in a statement.
He called the incident a 'deliberate attempt" to inflame communal passions and undermine the country's secular foundations.
'This is not just an attack on a tomb but on the very idea of India as a land where multiple faiths have coexisted peacefully for centuries," he said.
Abdullah said Sufi shrines and tombs across the country have long stood as symbols of communal harmony, drawing people from all religions, castes and backgrounds.
These sites embody India's unique blend of spiritual traditions and must be preserved as shared heritage, he said.
The NC president warned that such actions not only provoke unrest but also play into the hands of those trying to divide the nation.
'Such acts sow seeds of discord and intolerance, which are detrimental to the unity and peace of the country," he said, adding, 'I urge both the UP government and the central authorities to identify and punish the culprits without delay." There must be no leniency towards those who seek to disrupt communal harmony, he added.
Abdullah also called upon religious and community leaders to collectively denounce such acts and work toward strengthening the values of tolerance and coexistence.
'India's strength lies in its diversity. We must stand united against hatred and ensure that no one is allowed to damage the soul of our nation," he added. PTI SSB KSS KSS

SC criticises ‘completely vague' petitions against Gujarat's Vantara animal rescue centre
The Supreme Court on Thursday criticised two petitions alleging irregularities in animal rescue centre Vantara and the transfer of an ailing elephant from there, describing the pleas as 'completely vague', Live Law reported. However, the bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and PB Varela allowed the petitioners to amend their submissions, and scheduled the next hearing for August 25. The first petition demanded that a monitoring committee be set up to look into alleged irregularities at the Reliance Foundation-run Vantara, all captive elephants be returned to their owners and all wild animals at the facility be released back to the wild. The petitioner also questioned the transfer of an ailing elephant named Madhuri or Madhavi from the Kolhapur district to Vantara in Gujarat's Jamnagar. A bench of Justices Pankaj Mithal and PB Varale, however, questioned how the petitioner could make allegations against the animal rescue centre without even making it a party to the plea. 'You implead them [as respondents] and then come back to us we will see,' the court said, according to PTI. In the second petition, the counsel for the petitioners said that Vantara had already been impleaded in the matter. Mithal, however, asked whether the petitioner had approached the Central Zoo Authority before approaching the Supreme Court. 'Don't file such vague petitions,' the court said, according to Live Law. 'We can't even understand the relief you are seeking.' For over 30 years, the elephant Madhuri had been at a Jain monastery, named the Swastishri Jinsen Bhattarak Pattacharya Mahaswami Sansthan Mutt, in Kolhapur's Nandani village. In July, the Bombay High Court ordered Madhuri's rehabilitation to Vantara, and the Supreme Court subsequently upheld the order. The elephant was moved to the Reliance Foundation-run centre in Gujarat on July 30, sparking protests in Kolhapur. On August 5, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the state government will file a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking Madhuri's return to Kolhapur.

Actor Darshan arrested in Renukaswamy murder case after Supreme Court cancels his bail
Kannada actor Darshan Thogudeepa and actress Pavithra Gowda were arrested on Thursday after the Supreme Court cancelled their bail in the Renukaswamy murder case. Darshan was arrested at his wife Vijayalakshmi's house in Hosakerehalli in Bengaluru. The actor wanted to evade arrest and surrender in court, but the police got information about his stay and arrested him, reported PTI quoting sources. The SC observed that persons regardless of popularity are equal before the law. It directed the authorities to take Darshan and other accused into custody forthwith and ordered that the trial be conducted expeditiously. A Supreme Court bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan quashed the interim bail granted to Darshan by the Karnataka High Court, stating that the bail was granted without adequate consideration of the witness intimidation and other illegalities. The Karnataka government had moved the top court against Darshan's bail order. In a reaction to Thursday's order, advocate DL Chidananda, representing the state government, said the SC stated that the Karnataka HC's decision did not follow the principles of granting bail. Chidananda told ANI: "The Supreme Court said that the High Court has not followed the principles of law which apply for granting bail. It also reiterated that the rule of law prevails in the country and, however influential an individual may be, they must be treated in accordance with the law." Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in Renukaswamy murder case, was arrested from her house soon after the news broke that the bail of all the accused in the murder case was cancelled, according to news agency PTIciting police sources. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister's legal advisor, AS Ponnanna, said that granting Darshan bail would have hampered the investigation and trial. He said: "The state government and the prosecution agency were vindicated... It was the state government's decision that, in a case like this, where a serious offence has been registered, granting him bail would hamper the investigation and trial, as he is a powerful person. They did not want him to use his muscle to derail the prosecution's case." According to media reports, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of actor Darshan, had allegedly sent obscene messages to Gowda, which enraged Darshan, allegedly leading to his murder. His body was found near a stormwater drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli in Bengaluru on June 9, 2024. Raghavendra, one of the accused who is part of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, had brought Renukaswamy to a shed in RR Nagar in Bengaluru, on the pretext that the actor wanted to meet him. It was in this shed that he was allegedly tortured and killed.
