Cork man headbutted victim for 'skipping the queue' after Christmas party
Detective Sergeant Pat Lyons outlined this evidence at Cork Circuit Criminal Court where Cathal Lyons, aged 28, of Clonpriest East, Youghal, Co Cork, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing harm to the other man during a social event at Rochestown Park Hotel.
A number of different companies were out for a joint Christmas party dinner dance back on December 16, 2023. People who were staying in the hotel that night were in a queue to get to the residents-only part of the hotel after the event when the altercation occurred.
Det Sgt Lyons said the injured party was called forward in the queue by a number of his friends who were ahead of him but Mr Lyons reacted to what he saw as 'skipping the queue'. He headbutted the other man, caught him in a headlock and bit one of his fingers.
When identified on CCTV and questioned, the defendant had no recollection, no explanation and could only apologise unreservedly for entirely out-of-character behaviour.
Judge Sinead Behan imposed a one-year suspended sentence, noting that alcohol played a huge role in what occurred, he paid €5,000 compensation to the injured party and has given up drink since the incident occurred.

"It's the defence case that he has erectile dysfunction and his penis is three inches long. "The defence case is it would be physically impossible to have attempted or actually raped you." But the complainant responded: "That's not true." The court heard the woman was returning home from a Christmas party in December last year when the alleged horror unfolded. She had jumped out of a taxi to be sick before boarding a bus to Stratford. Just before 1am, the woman claims she was "dragged" to the floor and raped by a 6ft, "Middle-Eastern-looking" man with "yellowy, pale skin" and a "messy beard". She told jurors: "I just remember thinking he was foul. Really disgusting. Not clean. The smell. He was a smelly man. I think it's still on me. A smoker. Not somebody who looks after themselves.' The woman claims she could not have consented to sex because she did not see her alleged attacker "until it was happening". She also told the court she recalls "freezing" in horror during the 20 to 30 second attack. Mohmoudi has claimed he thought he recognised the woman so approached her to help. He said he then ran off when she "became hysterical" and started shouting at him. CCTV played to jurors showed the woman entering the alleyway before Mohmoudi follows her in. Hidden behind a large gate or fence, she shouts: "Wait, wait, wait. F**k you. F**k off. F**k you. F**k off". A cyclist then passes in the background before Mohmoudi runs away from the scene. Mohmoudi denies rape and the trial continues.

Suspect in car-ramming attack on German Christmas market charged with murder
The suspect in a deadly car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg has been charged with murder, attempted murder and bodily harm, prosecutors said. Five women and a boy died, and many more people were wounded, in the December 20 attack that lasted just over a minute. Authorities have identified the suspect as a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who arrived in Germany in 2006 and had received permanent residency. They have not officially released his name, in keeping with German privacy rules. In an indictment filed to the state court in Magdeburg, prosecutors say he is charged with six counts of murder, 338 counts of attempted murder and 309 counts of bodily harm. He is also accused of dangerous interference with road traffic. Murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The Magdeburg court will decide whether to send the case to trial. Prosecutors said the man was not under the influence of alcohol and apparently carried out the attack 'out of dissatisfaction and frustration with the course and outcome of a civil law dispute and the failure of various criminal complaints'. They said he aimed to kill as many people as possible and had spent several weeks planning the attack, without accomplices or anyone else knowing about his plans. The attack was carried out with a rented BMW X3, which reached speeds of up to 30 mph during the rampage. Officials have said the suspect does not fit the usual profile of perpetrators of extremist attacks. The man described himself as an ex-Muslim who was highly critical of Islam and on social media expressed support for the far-right. The suspect had previously come to authorities' attention for threatening behaviour but was not known to have committed any violence.

Gardaí carry out major raid amid escalating feud violence in Limerick
The feud is one of three currently ongoing in Limerick with a series of violent incidents between rival factions in Rathkeale GARDAÍ carried out a search operation in Kilmallock, after a series of feud-related violent incidents in the Co Limerick town. Last month shots were fired in two separate incidents, while in May gardaí in the area seized weapons after a car was stopped. 'As part of ongoing investigations in the Limerick Division, gardaí executed a search warrant at a residence in Kilmallock, County Limerick on Wednesday morning, July 30, 2025,' according to the Garda Press Office. 'A number of items were seized by gardaí in the course of the search operation. No arrests have been made at this time. Investigations are ongoing.' In May a video emerged in which a car is repeatedly rammed from behind before it crashes near a junction. A masked man is then seen smashing the windows of the crashed car. A man is heard on the clip saying: 'Either we're going to die or he's going to die.' The feud is one of three currently ongoing in Limerick with a series of violent incidents between rival factions in Rathkeale. An incident eight days ago in which there was a targeted attack at a rural pub in the county is believed to be linked to the feud. Sources says the assailants were armed with knives and bottles containing caustic liquid. The target of the attack escaped injury by running across fields, it was added. Gardaí in Newcastle West are investigating the incident. An arson attack at a house in Rathkeale last May is also believed to linked to the same feud. According to several social media posts, a child in the house at the time had a lucky escape from injury. There have been a series of violent incidents over the last five years, according to Sunday World sources. This year has already seen vehicles being rammed into a property to cause structural damage, as well as other arson attacks. Last November, a house was damaged and a car was set alight after a BMW X5 was used to smash into property. In October, a truck was used to damage a property in another incident, and petrol bombs were thrown at a house. Gardai mounted a security operation around the town during the Christmas season on a bid to keep a lid on the violence. Gardaí are also contending with a simmering feud between two organised crime gangs in Limerick city. Drive-by shootings, pipe bomb attacks and dangerous driving incidents have all been linked to violence between the gangs who are involved in the drugs trade on the city's south side. Gardai have also delivered Garda Information Messages to two men in the city, informing them of a credible threat to their lives. A number of people have been injured as a result of the clashes and a number of individuals are also facing prosecution.
