Hala EV adds four new electric vehicle models to fleet
Hala, a leading e-hailing taxi solution in Dubai, has announced the launch of Hala EV, a sustainability initiative that aims to transform urban mobility and support Dubai's vision for a greener future.
As part of this initiative, Hala is introducing four new electric vehicle (EV) models -- BYD, Skywell, GAC Emkoo and Tesla -- into its fleet across key areas in the city, bringing the total number of EVs in the fleet to almost 500 taxis.
The launch of Hala EV marks the beginning of a larger effort to scale sustainable transportation solutions. This aligns with Dubai's ambition for all taxis to be hybrid or hydrogen-powered by 2027. Hala, already a leader in eco-friendly mobility, is expanding its commitment to reducing emissions and driving positive environmental change within the e-hailing sector.
Currently, 90% of Hala's fleet of 13,000 taxis already comprises hybrid vehicles, and with the addition of these new EV models, Hala is taking another significant step towards achieving a fully eco-friendly taxi fleet. This initiative complements ongoing technological advancements, such as identifying High-Density Locations (HDL), which optimise taxi availability in high-demand areas, improving fuel efficiency and sustainability.
Khaled Nuseibeh, Chief Executive Officer at Hala, said: 'The launch of the Hala EV initiative reinforces our role as a key player in Dubai's sustainability vision while continuing to provide a seamless and reliable transport solution for our customers. Every ride in a Hala EV is a step towards a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable city.'
'Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond simply adding electric vehicles to our fleet—we see Hala EV as a catalyst for a more environmentally conscious e-hail industry, and we intend to scale this initiative as part of our long-term commitment to sustainability.'
Starting this month, Hala EVs will be available in select high-demand locations, including Dubai Marina, JLT, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, Media City, Al Barsha (1, 2, and 3), Barsha Heights, Knowledge Village, Al Sufouh, and Blue Waters Dubai. This expanded rollout of electric vehicles will offer residents and visitors a sustainable and convenient way to travel across some of Dubai's most vibrant and bustling districts.
Customers can book a Hala EV through the Careem app by selecting the Hala EV option when requesting a ride at no additional cost. With growing demand, Hala plans to expand its electric fleet to more areas across the city.

China accelerates EV battery swapping with new tech from CATL
TDT | agencies China is not just leading the global electric vehicle (EV) market—it's poised to transform the way EVs are powered. Chinese automakers and battery giants are now pushing battery swapping technology to new heights. Changan Automobile has launched the first 1,000 units of its Oshan 520 sedan, primarily targeting taxi services. However, these vehicles mark a major technological leap as the first to feature CATL's innovative Choco-SEB swappable battery packs. These batteries can be exchanged in just 100 seconds at dedicated swap stations—an efficiency game-changer for EV users. Chongqing already hosts 34 such stations, and CATL plans to expand this network to 1,000 stations across 31 cities by 2025. The infrastructure is designed to support up to 822 swaps per day per station, offering a fast, convenient alternative to conventional charging. CATL, the world's largest EV battery manufacturer, is partnering with major automakers—including Nio, Chery, GAC, SAIC, FAW, and BAIC—to integrate this technology into upcoming models. Among the vehicles adopting the Choco-SEB system are the GAC Aion S, Hongqi E-QM5, SAIC Roewe D7, BAIC C66, Wuling Bingo, and SAIC's Maxus range. While ideal for commercial fleets and taxis, this technology also has significant potential for long-distance drivers. Battery swapping stations on highways could one day rival the convenience of traditional petrol stations, making EV ownership even more practical and appealing.

Renault Kwid EV to launch by 2026
TDT | agencies Renault is gearing up to introduce the Kwid EV in India, marking its entry into the affordable electric vehicle segment. Based on the globally sold Dacia Spring EV, the Kwid EV is expected to launch by late 2026 or early 2027. Under the hood, the Kwid EV is anticipated to feature a 26.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, offering a WLTP-certified range of approximately 220–230 km on a single charge. Internationally, the EV comes with two motor options: a 44 bhp unit and a more powerful 64 bhp variant. Charging capabilities include a 7 kW AC charger, which can fully charge the battery in about 4 hours, and a 30 kW DC fast charger that can replenish 80% of the battery in approximately 45 minutes. The design of the Kwid EV is expected to retain the compact and urban-friendly dimensions of its petrol counterpart, with subtle EV-specific styling cues like a closed-off grille and unique alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin may feature modern amenities such as a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, and possibly vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities, allowing the car to power external devices.

BYD Price Slashing To Prompt Chinese EV Consolidation
BYD's aggressive discount campaign is shaking up China's EV market, pushing rivals to slash prices and raising concerns of an industry-wide 'race to the bottom,' according to Nikkei Asia. Since January, BYD has launched repeated limited-time offers. Its latest, running through June, cuts prices by up to 34% across 22 EV and hybrid models, with its Seagull now starting at just $7,700. Morningstar's Vincent Sun said investors are worried this signals a prolonged price war. 'I believe sales targets are the main driver behind this,' he said. BYD aims to sell 5.5 million vehicles in 2025, including 800,000 overseas. But its stock fell over 8% Monday and continued sliding Tuesday after the discount news. Great Wall Motor chairman Wei Jianjun hinted at growing debt in the industry, saying, 'The Evergrande of the automotive industry already exists; it just hasn't collapsed yet.' Many believe he was referring to BYD, whose debt ratio stood at 70.7% in March. BYD's Li Yunfei appeared to hit back with a cryptic social media post: 'A dog can bite a person! But a person cannot bite a dog!' Nikkei writes that other carmakers quickly followed BYD's lead. Geely's Galaxy brand launched deals with discounts up to 20,000 yuan, while Changan and Leapmotor also cut prices. Rising inventories are partly to blame—China had 3.5 million unsold vehicles in April, a 57-day supply, the highest since late 2023. BYD alone reported 154.4 billion yuan in inventory, up 33% from the previous quarter. Despite its lead, BYD is feeling pressure. Haitong's Oscar Wang said competitors are catching up in tech and pricing. 'While long-term reliance on price wars may erode brand premium value, it can help capture market share in the short term,' he said. Macquarie's Eugene Hsiao noted, 'We think BYD is looking to both sustain its position in the local EV market while also forcing competitors to match them on prices, which may accelerate future consolidation.' The Chinese government has signaled support for mergers among state-owned auto firms, and Geely recently announced it will take Zeekr private to cut overlapping costs. S&P Global warned that 'many entities [are] on an unsustainable path' and predicted 'a sweeping consolidation' ahead. 'For many firms, a merger or some form of partnership will be necessary for survival.' Also read: China Grants Visa-Free Entry To Bahraini Citizens Starting June 9
