Hala EV adds four new electric vehicle models to fleet
As part of this initiative, Hala is introducing four new electric vehicle (EV) models -- BYD, Skywell, GAC Emkoo and Tesla -- into its fleet across key areas in the city, bringing the total number of EVs in the fleet to almost 500 taxis.
The launch of Hala EV marks the beginning of a larger effort to scale sustainable transportation solutions. This aligns with Dubai's ambition for all taxis to be hybrid or hydrogen-powered by 2027. Hala, already a leader in eco-friendly mobility, is expanding its commitment to reducing emissions and driving positive environmental change within the e-hailing sector.
Currently, 90% of Hala's fleet of 13,000 taxis already comprises hybrid vehicles, and with the addition of these new EV models, Hala is taking another significant step towards achieving a fully eco-friendly taxi fleet. This initiative complements ongoing technological advancements, such as identifying High-Density Locations (HDL), which optimise taxi availability in high-demand areas, improving fuel efficiency and sustainability.
Khaled Nuseibeh, Chief Executive Officer at Hala, said: 'The launch of the Hala EV initiative reinforces our role as a key player in Dubai's sustainability vision while continuing to provide a seamless and reliable transport solution for our customers. Every ride in a Hala EV is a step towards a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable city.'
'Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond simply adding electric vehicles to our fleet—we see Hala EV as a catalyst for a more environmentally conscious e-hail industry, and we intend to scale this initiative as part of our long-term commitment to sustainability.'
Starting this month, Hala EVs will be available in select high-demand locations, including Dubai Marina, JLT, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, Media City, Al Barsha (1, 2, and 3), Barsha Heights, Knowledge Village, Al Sufouh, and Blue Waters Dubai. This expanded rollout of electric vehicles will offer residents and visitors a sustainable and convenient way to travel across some of Dubai's most vibrant and bustling districts.
Customers can book a Hala EV through the Careem app by selecting the Hala EV option when requesting a ride at no additional cost. With growing demand, Hala plans to expand its electric fleet to more areas across the city.

BYD to begin local EV assembly in Pakistan by mid-2026
TDT | Agencies Chinese automaker BYD is set to begin local assembly of electric vehicles in Pakistan by July or August 2026, aiming to capitalise on the growing demand for EVs and plug-in hybrids in the region. The plant, currently under construction near Karachi since April, is being developed in partnership with Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of Pakistani energy giant Hub Power. According to Danish Khaliq, Vice President of Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 25,000 units and will initially run on a two-shift basis. However, he did not provide a timeline for when the plant would reach full-scale production or begin mass manufacturing. In its early phase, the factory will assemble vehicles using imported components, while producing certain non-electric parts locally. The focus will initially be on meeting domestic demand, though exports to other right-hand-drive markets in the region may be considered depending on logistics and cost viability. BYD entered the Pakistani market in August 2024 with three models: the all-electric Atto 3, the Seal EV, and the hybrid Sealion 6. Deliveries of imported vehicles began in March 2025. While official sales figures have not been disclosed, Khaliq said that sales had already surpassed internal targets by 30 percent, with several hundred vehicles delivered so far. Looking ahead, he projected that the EV and plug-in hybrid market in Pakistan could expand three to four times in 2025, up from around 1,000 units in 2024. BYD is aiming to capture a 30 to 35% share of that segment.

Tesla marks India entry with first showroom
Tesla unveiled its first showroom in India yesterday, marking its entry into the world's most populous country, as Elon Musk's electric vehicle company seeks new customers amid sagging sales in the United States and Europe. The store opened its doors in India's financial capital Mumbai to select visitors after its inauguration by Maharashtra state's chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The company -- which is targeting a niche but quickly growing electric vehicle market in India -- said that it was currently offering its Model Y car in India and would look to start rolling out deliveries of a cheaper variant later this quarter. 'This is the first launch of Tesla in India. It marks a huge milestone for Tesla globally,' said Isabel Fan, the company's senior regional director, adding that charging stations would be set up in Mumbai and the capital New Delhi shortly. While the showroom will open to the general public today, curious onlookers and Tesla admirers braved Mumbai's heavy rains to catch a glimpse of the cars on display. Tesla has for years signalled its interest in India but held back due to the country's steep tariffs on electric vehicles. Musk, who once described India as having 'more promise than any large country', has also criticised its import duties, calling t h e m among t h e 'highest in the world'. Tesla has yet to announce plans to set up a plant in India. India's nascent EV industry For now, local media reports say, the company will likely sell cars imported from China. As a result, its Model Y variants start from an on-road price of around $70,000 in India, according to its website, far higher than a US price of $37,490 after a $7,500 federal tax credit. Tesla's India debut comes at a critical time for the company, which is seeing demand wane for its cars in countries around the world. The recent slump in Tesla's sales partly reflects the highly competitive nature of the EV market, which the company once dominated but now also features BYD and other low-cost Chinese players. While Tesla is looking to tap the world's third-biggest car market , experts say it is unlikely to see huge volumes in the short-term due to the nascent nature of India's EV industry and the hefty price tag of its vehicles. India's EV market is fast-growing but remains small, with automakers reporting sales of around 100,000 vehicles in 2024 or less than three percent of total car sales. Soumen Mandal, a senior analyst at Counterpoint, said the high price tag will likely place it out of the price range of most Indian customers and see it compete against offerings from luxury carmakers instead. 'We don't expect Tesla to play the volume game right away given the price tag,' Mandal told AFP. 'We project 500-700 units sold in initial months and then that to taper off to 200-300 (per month).' India is currently negotiating a trade deal with the United States, including a potential reduction in tariffs on automobiles. In February, Musk held a oneon-one meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington.
