India and UK resume negotiations on FTA

Times of Oman24-02-2025

New Delhi: India and the UK have resumed negotiations towards a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement on Monday.
This announcement has been made by the Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his UK counterpart Jonathan Reynolds who is in Delhi, the statement said.
The two sides have agreed to resume negotiations towards a balanced, mutually beneficial and a forward-looking deal that delivers mutual growth and builds on the strengths of two complementary economies, it said.
Goyal expressed confidence that the two nations will be able to make rapid progress to meet the collective aspirations for trade, investment and mutual prosperity of the people of the two nations.
Piyush Goyal said, 'I'm very confident that we will be able to make rapid progress to meet the collective aspirations for trade, investment and the mutual prosperity of the people of the United Kingdom and India. It's also very auspicious that we are restarting discussions today just before we celebrate Mahashivratri, day after tomorrow, which is the sacred union of Shiv and Shakti.
'We showed him a lot of Shiv and a lot of Durga Shakti at the National Crafts Museum today. I think that is a great messaging. I would like to reaffirm our collective commitment to meet the aspirations of the people and businesses. I would like to call this FTA a forward-looking, transparent and ambitious, equitable, balanced and mutually beneficial agreement which will be a win-win for both our countries,' he added.
The decision of two nations comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart Keir Starmer met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro in November 2024 to underline the importance of resuming trade negotiations at an early date.
'This announcement has been made by Minister for Commerce and Industry of India Shri Piyush Goyal and Secretary of State for the Department for Business and Trade of the United Kingdom the Rt Hon Jonathan Reynolds who is in Delhi. This announcement is an outcome of the above stated discussions held at the level of Prime Ministers of the two countries,' it added.
According to the joint statement released by the ministry, the two nations share a close partnership, built through collaboration on security and defence, new and emerging technologies, climate, health, education, research and innovation, green finance and people-to-people contacts. At the centre of this bilateral relationship is the collective aspiration to deliver economic growth and sustainable development.
'Both sides have agreed to resume negotiations towards a balanced, mutually beneficial and a forward-looking deal that delivers mutual growth and builds on the strengths of the two complementary economies. The strengthening of the trading relationship between our two countries has the potential to unlock opportunities for business and consumers across both our nations and build further on our already deep ties,' it said.
The two leaders directed the negotiators to work together to resolve the outstanding issues in the agreement to ensure a fair and equitable trade deal for shared success.
Earlier in the day, Piyush Goyal and Jonathan Reynolds held a meeting in Delhi. The discussions between two leaders focused on advancing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement negotiations and ensuring that the agreement is balanced, ambitious and mutually beneficial.
In a post on X, Goyal wrote, 'Delighted to meet & welcome @JReynoldsMP, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to Incredible India! Looking forward to an action-packed day of discussions.'
'During the meeting, our discussions focused on advancing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement negotiations and ensuring that the agreement is balanced, ambitious and mutually beneficial. Reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties while unlocking new opportunities for businesses in both nations,' he added.
The FTA was launched under UK's Conservative government in January 2022 and was paused when former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the general election.
'Securing a trade deal with what is soon-to-be the third biggest economy in the world is a no-brainer, and a top priority for me and this Government. That is why I'm flying to New Delhi with our top negotiating team to show our commitment to getting these talks back on track,' Reynolds said in a statement released by the British High Commission in India prior to meeting with Piyush Goyal.
Reynolds emphasised the government's dedication to fostering economic growth through strategic international partnerships, stating, 'We are focused on accelerating economic growth across the UK by working closely with key global partners like India.'

L'Oreal to double its India business; company CEO says the country is strategic market, big priority

Paris: Nicolas Hieronimus, CEO of global beauty products company L'Oreal, has said they aim to more than double business in India over the next couple of years. The L'Oreal CEO had a meeting with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in Paris today. "...I am very pleased with the meeting I just had with Minister Goyal (Piyush Goyal). We shared our mutual ambition for India and India is a very strategic market for L'Oreal," the CEO said. L'Oreal's leadership has identified India as a very strategic market with very strong growth potential. Hieronimus said India is a country of opportunities, one of the fastest-growing beauty markets in the world. "We intend to more than double our business in the next couple of years, expand our factories which are today manufacturing 95% of what we sell in India but also export into rest of the region. So, it is a country of opportunities, one of the fastest beauty markets in the world and a big priority for L'Oreal," he told the media. India serves not only as a consumption market but also as a regional manufacturing hub for L'Oreal's operations. "We are exporting hair and skin products, particularly to the Gulf region. So, it is just the beginning of a big adventure. We are manufacturing half a billion units in India, but we intend to increase that in the years to come." The rapid growth trajectory of beauty product markets in India, coupled with the country's manufacturing capabilities and skilled workforce, makes the country an attractive destination for international companies looking to establish regional production bases while serving the domestic market.

Electric cars key to India's energy independence, says IEA chief

Paris: India should prioritise electric vehicle (EV) adoption to reduce its dependence on oil imports and strengthen energy security, International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol said on Monday after a meeting with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. "India should look at the electrification of mobility very closely because currently we have low oil prices, but the country is definitely at the mercy of some key oil producers," Birol warned. "If India wants to have the upper hand in terms of domestic energy trajectories, electric cars are one of the key solutions." The IEA chief highlighted the rapid global shift toward electric vehicles, noting that electric car sales have surged from just 3 per cent of total car sales four years ago to 25% this year. "One out of four cars sold today is electric," he said. "This is mainly because electric cars are getting cheaper, slowly but surely." In many countries, electric and conventional vehicles now carry similar price tags, while operating costs favour EVs. "In most countries around the world, driving one kilometre costs less with electricity than with oil, unless oil prices fall below $50," Birol explained. He predicted that electric vehicles will eventually dominate global transportation. "The world is going to see that sooner or later, electric cars will be dominating the streets." Birol praised India as "one of the drivers of the global clean energy transition," particularly highlighting the country's solar energy achievements. "India has achieved a huge success story, especially on the solar front, and this is good for India's economy and its energy security," he noted. The IEA executive director also commended India's LED bulb program, calling Minister Goyal its architect and describing it as "one of the most successful programs in the history of energy transition." The initiative has made India's electrification system more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. He also praised the Ujjwala program for bringing clean cooking solutions to hundreds of millions of households and for its efforts to provide electricity access to Indian villages. Addressing concerns about the energy transition's supply chain, Birol warned of growing concentration in critical mineral mining and processing. "We are seeing major concentration. This is a worry because we at the IEA believe that the best energy security policy is diversification," he said. The concentration of critical minerals--essential for energy transition, defense, and chip manufacturing--poses "serious risk for the years to come," he warned. Birol urged all countries to diversify mining, refining, and processing of key critical minerals to avoid potential supply disruptions. For oil-importing nations like India, Birol recommended government incentives to accelerate electric vehicle adoption. "Countries importing oil should consider giving incentives to electric cars to reduce imports from different parts of the world," he said. He emphasized the importance of supporting consumers in purchasing their first electric vehicles, noting that countries must avoid falling behind in the electric car revolution.

"Deepening India-France economic ties": Piyush Goyal meets French minister Eric Lombard

Paris: Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal held a productive meeting with French Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Eric Lombard, on Monday (local time), focusing on deepening the India-France economic partnership with an emphasis on trade, investments, and technology cooperation. The discussions, which took place during Goyal's three-day official visit to France, also reviewed the progress of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, signalling a strong intent to bolster bilateral ties amidst a shared commitment to innovation and economic growth. "Held a productive meeting with Eric Lombard, French Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty. Exchanged views on deepening our economic partnership, enhancing trade & investments with a special focus on technology and innovation across key sectors. Also discussed the progress of the India-EU FTA negotiations. Looking forward to stronger India-France economic ties," Goyal said in a post on X. Earlier, the Commerce and Industry Minister expressed optimism that India could finalise its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) ahead of the year-end deadline, citing minimal divergences between the two economic blocs. Goyal emphasised the complementary nature of the Indian and European economies. "There are not too many issues where we have divergence of opinion. We have both complementary economies," he stated. "In most cases, what is of offensive interest to India does not hurt the European economy. And likewise, goods and services that Europe would like to provide to India only support our growth story." The minister acknowledged that certain sensitive areas require careful negotiation on both sides. "Obviously, in any trading relationship, there are certain sensitive issues on both sides which we have to resolve amicably in the interest of both the European Union and India," Goyal noted. Goyal also held a series of high-level meetings in Paris with top French CEOs to explore new opportunities for India's growth across key sectors such as renewable energy, automobile manufacturing, electric vehicles (EVs), and consumer products. As part of his engagements, Goyal met Bernard Fontana, Chairman and CEO of EDF Energy, to discuss India's growing role in the global clean energy transition. He also met Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, Nicolas Hieronimus, CEO of L'Oreal Groupe and Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman and CEO of Total Energies.
