Thousands of tons of invasive seaweed ‘overwhelming' Spanish beaches

Thousands of tonnes of an aggressive invasive seaweed from south-east Asia are piling up on the beaches of the strait of Gibraltar and Spain's southern coast in what local environmentalists say is a major threat to the region's biodiversity.
Since May, the local authority in Cádiz has removed 1,200 tonnes of the alga Rugulopteryx okamurae from La Caleta, the city's most popular beach, including 78 tonnes in a single day.
'We're completely overwhelmed. This is an environmental catastrophe,' said José Carlos Teruel, responsible for Cádiz city council's beaches. 'Whenever the wind is westerly, we know we're in for another wave of seaweed.'
As with many other invasive marine species, the alga is thought to arrive in the ballast tanks of ships which pass through the Suez canal and then discharge their tanks in the Mediterranean.
In little more than a decade the species has colonised the strait of Gibraltar, much of Spain's southern coast, the Canary Islands, the Azores, and, farther north, the Cantabrian sea and the Basque Country.
'It was first spotted 10 years ago in Ceuta, Spain's north African enclave, by a researcher from Málaga university, but the authorities are always too slow to react,' said Juan José Vergara, a professor of biology at the University of Cádiz.
'In the first phase of an invasion such as this it can be controlled. It's like catching cancer early on before it spreads,' Vergara said, adding that what washes ashore is a fraction of what is underwater.
'But now the scale of it makes it impossible to control. In other seaweed invasions we've seen things revert to normal after a period of 10-15 years but many scientists say they've never seen an invasion on this scale.'
The seaweed is having a major impact on the local economy, firstly on tourism in Cádiz and nearby Tarifa, a town popular with windsurfers, and on fishing because it traps fishers' nets and lines and also sucks oxygen out of the water. Then there's the cost to the taxpayer of disposing of it.
Perhaps most worrying is its impact on biodiversity. On the beach at La Caleta, the seaweed has driven out many indigenous plants. It is unclear whether the damage is temporary or irreversible.
The alga attaches itself to rocks and other surfaces and is also free-floating, wiping out native species of seaweed. It has no predators in the region and its capacity to reproduce both sexually and asexually and to absorb toxins makes it virtually impossible to eradicate, experts say.
At present the seaweed is dumped in landfill sites. Vergara said a local business that recycles seaweed into drinks containers or to use as fuel and fertiliser has sought permission to use Rulopteryx okamuraeas as a biomass to produce energy.
However, Spain's law on invasive species prohibits their commercial exploitation unless they pose a threat to health and safety or to further their eradication, a caveat that would seem to apply to Rulopteryx okamuraeas.
This week the government in Andalucía launched a four-part plan to confront the crisis based on research, monitoring and education, and which includes options for recycling the seaweed.
To use it as biomass the regional government will have to negotiate with Spain's environment ministry but Vergara said that even if an agreement is reached, it can only be part of the solution.
'It's an interesting idea but I doubt it will be able to eradicate or even significantly diminish the intensity of the invasion when hundreds of thousands of tonnes can wash up on a single beach,' he said.

The relationships built up between female mountain gorillas are more important than previously understood, new research from Rwanda shows that when one of these social great apes moves into a new group, she will seek out and join another female she already based the research on 20 years of data covering multiple groups of gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, in scientists found that even when two females had been apart for many years, a newly arrived gorilla would still try to join a female she had formed a previous connection with. The findings, published in the Royal Society Journal Proceedings B, show how important the relationship between two individual females is in gorilla society."Scientifically, I don't know if I can talk about 'friendship'," explained lead researcher Victoire Martignac, a PhD researcher form the University of Zurich. "But we're showing here that these same sex relationships really matter."Moving into different groups is key in shaping the animals' social structure. It's something that both males and females do - females will sometimes move several times throughout their lives. This dispersal, as it's known, plays a role in avoiding inbreeding, spreading gene diversity and shaping social relationships. "In the wild is is a very important," explained Ms Martignac. "But it's extremely hard to study, because once individuals leave a group, it's hard to keep track of them." Working in partnership with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, at a field site that has been monitored since 1967, Ms Martignac and her colleagues were able to track those movements. Pouring through decades of information on the animals' lives, the scientists followed the "disperals" of 56 female mountain gorillas - examining which new group they chose to join and why. The gorillas avoided groups that had males they were likely to be related to, but the presence of females they knew also "mattered a lot", Ms Martignac explained. The females gravitated towards their "friends", even if the animals had been apart for many years. They would often gravitate to a group with females they had grown up with, even if that was many years ago. They also sought out individuals with whom they had made a social connection - perhaps played and interacted with - recently. Ms Martignac explained that the gorillas would invest in these relationships because they deliver key social benefits. "New arrivals usually start at the bottom of the social hierarchy," she said. "Resident females can be pretty aggressive towards them, because they're potentially a competitor."Moving around is something that is also crucial in shaping human society. And the researchers say that studying its roots in other great apes can shed light on the evolutionary driving forces behind it. "Movement is a huge part of the way we live," said Ms Martignac. "But those decisions do not fossilise. "So we look at them in our closest evolutionary cousins."This new insight into gorillas' social lives, she added, "reframes how we think of female-female social relationships". "They're much more important to these animals than we used to think."

This year could be the worst ever for Asian hornets in the UK, scientists are warning, after a rise in sightings of the invasive insect. The National Bee Unit says there were 73 credible sightings up to the end of last month – more than double the 28 recorded in the same period last year. Experts from the unit have also found 28 nests so far this year. One nest can house up to 3,000 of the insects. Asian hornets, also known as yellow-legged hornets, can badly harm native pollinator insects, including honeybees, threatening food security and ecosystems, ecologists say. The species was sighted in record numbers in the UK in 2023, and last September UK experts saw evidence for the first time of the queens over-wintering. In May this year, their numbers were described as unprecedented. The Liberal Democrats have accused the government of not taking the issue seriously enough and are calling for a task force to deal with the problem. Martin Wrigley, MP for Newton Abbot in Devon, told The Telegraph: 'The previous Conservative government was asleep at the wheel in their response to Asian hornets so the government has got to wake up to the risks and get a grip on this invasive species now – especially ahead of August and September, when new females are born. 'We urgently need a fully fleshed task force dedicated to this invasive insect to reduce delays between reporting nests and their destruction. It's time this government took our biodiversity and the safety of our communities seriously.' The species, which spread from Asia to Europe in a pottery consignment sent to France in 2004, was first spotted in Britain in 2016, and numbers have been rising since. The UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) has warned that without early detection and a rapid response, the species could gain a foothold in the UK. Sightings usually peak from September, and people are urged to report any sightings on the Asian Hornet Watch app. Ian Campbell, of the British Beekeepers Association, said that this year appeared to be a 'surge year' for yellow-legged hornets, in part because of the weather. 'There is significant worry that this year is going to be ahead of 2023, which is the worst year we've had so far,' he said. He called for authorities to try to eradicate the species before it became fully established. The invasive species is mostly found in Kent and East Sussex but has also been seen in Surrey, Hampshire and London, and even as far as Co Durham. It's thought they come into the country on vehicles. Ecologists say that except for parts of Scotland, all of Britain has a suitable climate for yellow-legged hornets. Asian hornets also have a dark abdomen with a band of yellow, while native hornets' abdomens are predominantly yellow. A spokesman for the Animal and Plant Health Agency told The Telegraph: 'Our highly skilled staff work 24/7 to tackle the threat of invasive non-native species, which cost the economy nearly £2bn a year. 'The yellow-legged hornet response, as with other outbreaks, is managed through a roster of trained nest destructors and inspectors that is scaled up as required based on reports and seasonal fluctuations.' They said it was not unexpected to see more reports of sightings as public awareness of the insects increased. A spokesman for Defra said the government would 'never waver in its duty to protect the UK's biosecurity' and pointed to its establishment of a new £200m biosecurity centre and an additional £10m for new surveillance projects.
