IRCTC Got Over 6,000 Complaints On Poor Food Quality In 2024-25: Minister
In 2024-25, 6,645 complaints related to poor quality of food were reported by passengers, out of which in 1,341 cases fines were imposed on the food suppliers, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
Of the total, in 2,995 cases warnings were issued, in 1,547 cases suitable advisories were given and other measures were taken in the remaining 762 cases, Mr Vaishnaw said in the reply.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas raised the issues of food quality in trains and transparency in the award of contracts to companies.
When asked to provide details regarding instances of seizure of unhygienic food items from the railway caterers as well as complaints filed by passengers regarding the quality and safety of food served on trains in the last five years, the Railway Minister presented the data in a tabular form.
Mr Vaishnaw said, "Prompt and appropriate punitive action, including imposition of fines, disciplinary action, counselling, warning etc., is taken in case any instance of adulterated/unhygienic food or passenger complaint is reported." According to the data, in 2023-24, 2022-23, and 2021-22, the number of complaints received from passengers was 7,026, 4,421, and 1,082, respectively.
Mr Brittas asked "whether Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) awarded contracts across multiple railway routes, including Vande Bharat and other long-distance services, to a corporate group using multiple affiliate entities." In his reply, the Union minister said that the IRCTC regularly floats tenders to select service providers for the provision of onboard catering services in trains, including Vande Bharat and other long-distance trains.
"These tenders are awarded through a transparent process to the highest bidders as per the terms and conditions stipulated in the tender documents. The details of Letters of Award (LOA), issued to multiple service providers, are published on the website of IRCTC. At present, contracts of clusters of trains have been awarded by IRCTC to 20 entities," Mr Vaishnaw said.
He provided various measures taken to maintain food quality, such as the supply of meals from designated Base Kitchens, commissioning of modern Base Kitchens at identified locations, Installation of CCTV Cameras in Base Kitchens, shortlisting and use of popular and branded raw materials, deployment of Food Safety Supervisors at Base Kitchens to monitor food safety and hygienic practices among others.

ED took up 5,892 PMLA cases since 2015, got convictions of 15: Govt to Rajya Sabha
The Finance Ministry has informed Rajya Sabha that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took up 5,892 cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) since 2015 and secured the conviction of 15 people from these cases during the period. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply: 'In these cases, 1,398 Prosecution Complaints (PCs), including 353 Supplementary PCs have been filed before the respective Special Courts under PMLA. Out of which, so far, the Special Courts have framed charges in 300 Prosecution Complaints including 66 Supplementary PCs and the PMLA Special Courts have convicted 15 persons in eight conviction orders in these cases till June 30.' The minister said that the ED has filed closure reports before the special PMLA court in 49 of the total cases. In an annual report 2024-25, ED Director Rahul Navin said: 'In the early years of administering PMLA, most cases pertained to drug-related offences. Till March 2014, only 1,883 Enforcement Case Information Reports (ECIRs) had been registered — averaging fewer than 200 annually — and just 84 Prosecution Complaints (PCs) were filed, with assets under attachment only Rs 5,171.32 crore.' 'Between April 2014 and March 2024, there has been a significant scale-up in enforcement activity, with 5,113 PMLA investigations initiated — averaging 511 ECIRs annually — and 1,332 PCs filed. I am pleased to report that building on this momentum, in FY- 2024-25, 775 new PMLA investigations were launched, 333 PCs were filed, and notably, 34 individuals were convicted,' he said.

Govt schools in Belthangady to turn into smart classrooms
Mangaluru: With a vision to provide digital learning opportunities similar to those available in private schools, a total 110 govt schools in Belthangady will be transformed into smart classrooms. Under the Rajya Sabha Local Area Development Fund, Rajya Sabha member D Veerendra Heggade sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore for the initiative. Under this project, schools have already been selected, including eight aided schools in the taluk. Mahabala Kulal from the community development section of Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, who is coordinating the project, said that the process of selecting schools started five months ago. "After consultation with the block education office at Belthangady, we selected 110 govt schools in the taluk. The project is funded from the local area development. Currently, the tender process is in progress. We expect smart classroom materials to reach before the celebration of Teacher's Day," he said. In order to convert existing traditional classrooms into smart classrooms, the beneficiary schools will receive LED TVs and other accessories. They will also receive a hard disk containing the entire school syllabus. Explaining the aim behind this initiative. Kulal shared that currently, such facilities are available only in private schools. "Heggade wanted such facilities extended to govt schools as well, to help them improve their academics. As a result, this project was planned and implemented," said Kulal, adding that this initiative aims to utilise modern technology for the educational development of children.

Gulf leads in migration with Saudi having highest Indian ECR workers
Mangaluru: Indian blue-collar workers constitute a significant portion of the workforce in several Gulf countries, notably Saudi Arabia. Recent data from five years indicates a strong trend of migration to the Gulf region for employment, particularly in the construction sector and other labour-intensive industries. Between Jan 2020 and June 2025, according to data shared by the ministry of external affairs in the Rajya Sabha on July 31, Indian expats working in blue-collar jobs are present in 14 countries, accounting for 16,06,964 individuals. The substantial number of Emigration Check Required (ECR) category workers in these countries underscores the economic ties and labour dynamics between India and the Gulf. Among the 14 countries, Saudi Arabia has the highest number of Indian workers, including those engaged in construction and labour-intensive work. The country currently has 695,269 workers, followed by the UAE (3,41,365 workers), Kuwait (2,01,959 workers), Qatar (1,53,501 workers), and Oman (1,16,840 workers). According to employers, mainly from Gulf countries, the revival of infrastructure and labour demand in Gulf countries started to see a notable surge in 2022 and 2023, with the highest number of workers (3,98,000) sent abroad in 2023 alone. This year, as of June 2025, Saudi Arabia has recruited 71,175 workers; however, the UAE has the highest number, with 96,401 workers employed. They include toll-free helplines, WhatsApp support, and mobile apps via Indian missions; Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayata Kendras (PBSKs) in key cities; Pre-Departure Orientation and Training (PDOT) and the Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojna (PBBY) for safer migration. Also, the utilisation of the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) worth Rs 703 crore since inception has benefited over 3.5 lakh Indians with legal, medical, and emergency assistance abroad.
