PM Modi will attend an event marking 1000 years of Rajendra Chola I's maritime expedition and the construction of Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday will attend a programme to mark a thousand years of the maritime expedition of the great Rajendra Chola I to South East Asia and the commencement of the construction of the iconic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple in Tamil Nadu.
As part of the celebrations, a commemorative coin honouring the great Chola king will be released, coinciding with the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, PM Modi wrote on X.
'Tomorrow, 27th July, will witness a very special programme to mark a thousand years of the maritime expedition of the great Rajendra Chola I to South East Asia and the commencement of the construction of the iconic Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, a shining example of Chola architecture. It is our privilege that a commemorative coin honouring Rajendra Chola I is being released, also celebrating the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival," he said on X.
The celebration also commemorates the birth anniversary of the great Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I. The grand finale of the festival on July 27 will be graced by PM Modi, who will attend the event as the Chief Guest.
Who Was Rajendra Chola I?
He established Gangaikonda Cholapuram as the imperial capital after his victorious campaigns, and the temple he built there served as a beacon of Shaiva devotion, monumental architecture, and administrative prowess for over 250 years.
Today, the temple stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its intricate sculptures, Chola bronzes, and ancient inscriptions.
The Aadi Thiruvathirai festival also celebrates the rich Tamil Shaiva Bhakti tradition, fervently supported by the Cholas and immortalised by the 63 Nayanmars—the saint-poets of Tamil Shaivism.
Notably, Rajendra Chola's birth star, Thiruvathirai (Ardra), begins on July 23, making this year's festival all the more significant.
PM Modi will be joined by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, R.N. Ravi, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr. L. Murugan, along with other dignitaries.

Emergency Landing Causes Temporary Runway Shutdown At Birmingham Airport

Last Updated: The disruption was triggered by a small aircraft that was forced to make an emergency landing at approximately 1:40 pm local time. An accident at Birmingham Airport in the United Kingdom on Wednesday afternoon led to the temporary shutdown of the runway until at least 8:00 pm local time. While operations had resumed by the time of writing, the incident prompted widespread flight delays and cancellations throughout the day. The disruption was triggered by a small aircraft that was forced to make an emergency landing at approximately 1:40 pm local time. According to West Midlands Police, the emergency landing resulted in a minor accident, reported Sky News. Emergency medical teams treated three people at the scene, with one individual reported to have sustained injuries. No fatalities were reported. Footage of the incident quickly spread on social media platforms, showing a small white aircraft lying flat on the tarmac. The aircraft involved has been identified by Flightradar24, a popular flight tracking website, as a Beech B200 Super King Air. The plane had departed from Birmingham at 12:11 pm and was en route to Belfast in Northern Ireland. In response to the incident, emergency services including police, fire crews, and paramedics were immediately dispatched to the runway. The first official update from Birmingham Airport came around 2:40 pm, confirming the suspension of all operations as authorities responded to the situation. The closure forced the cancellation of at least 11 outbound flights to various destinations across Europe, according to the airport's official website. Several other flights faced significant delays until the runway was cleared and deemed safe for use. Inbound flights were also affected, with some being diverted to nearby airports, while others were held on the ground or delayed mid-air. Passengers were provided with alternative arrangements where possible. Airport officials urged travelers to check their flight status before arriving at the airport, as check-in counters and security processing were also temporarily impacted. Birmingham Airport, the third-busiest airport in the UK outside of London, saw large crowds gather as travelers awaited updates. Normal operations resumed shortly after 8:00 pm local time, with the airport confirming the restoration of services via an announcement on X.
